The consensus view seems to be that Portishead was pretty special.

I didn't see Skrillex, but word seemed to indicate that it was fairly far way from a *standard* UK festival set.

Well, I enjoyed Chic!

In comparison to Adele,.... I mean, she's no Patti Smith (she could have conceivably headlined a smaller stage last year instead of being on the Pyramid), and she's no Kate Bush (no chance of that I know)... but I'd happily take something like that as an option.

'Extraordinary' - can we count as a headliner people remember years and years after, but on smaller stage.... Yes, I am struggling....

It's obviously way too early to be confident - especially in an oversaturated festival market - but this is Adele's first ever big festival performance and who's to say it might not be the last.

It's as close to a unique show as we can probably expect.

This is exactly my point/query. That Glastonbury has to go to the lengths of putting on something borderline unlistenable (the bauld Skrillex) to achieve this is hugely disappointing.

@CaledonianGonzo Wasn't there for Portishead, but saw that tour elsewhere and loved it. Any other examples?

Skrillex, Portishead, QOTSA, Flaming Lips, Doves, Gong, Iggy and the Stooges, Ian Brown (doing Roses tunes). Thats 1 a year, more maybe.

Of the paltry one per year conjured up by Nal up thread, only Iggy and Skrillex strikes me as being truly extraordinary. Anyone think of any others? Goes some way to explaining why the headliner is debated and poured over so much. Thats the business end of the fest. Adele's performance will define 2016.

What does "extraordinary" mean? I wasn't at all I mentioned but the Flaming Lips are always extraordinary, as was the bit of Gong I saw and Ian Brown starting with 4 Roses tunes certainly was. Hence why lots were talking about it last week in the Roses thread I think it was. 11 years later.

Adele is similar to Kanye for me last year. Great booking for the festival, a big star who hasn't played before. No interest myself but would toddle along for a couple of tunes if there was nowt on elsewhere just to see how the land lies.

There are unique collaborations happening on site - particularly at West Holts.

Last year from memory there was the Gaslamp Killer / Heliocentrics thing, the Mothership Returns, Hot Chip and Caribou, the FKA Twigs modern dance thing and (maybe, albeit I'm a bit sketchy on this) Flying Lotus.

Your mileage may vary on how 'extraordinary' that all is though.

Just like with the headliners though, "extraordinary" comes down entirely to personal preference.

If you're looking for unique collaborations then the Jazz World Stage frequently has something that should objectively qualify - the Mothership Returns from last year for example. But If you're writing things off based on "I don't like them", then it'll just get overlooked.

aye he had both George Clinton and Thundercat on with him. gutted i missed that. also pretty awesome George Clinton stuck around for the entire weekend and made multiple appearances (Mark Ronson, Mothership, Flying Lotus)

Adele is by the most interesting of the three headliners. A debut Glastonbury appearance, the most popular UK artist there is right now, an uncertainty as to whether Adele can handle the occasion, and an armful of good tunes with rousing choruses and woriught with emotion. 

Whilst I will probably be elsewhere on the saturday night, I may let my curiousity get the better of me and pop along for a look.

I do not have a problem with this booking at all, Adele seems and obvious act for Glastonbury to chase. it's the rebooking of Coldplay for 5th headline and Muse for a 3rd that are tedious.

FKA Twigs is a good shout - she wasnt at the top of the bill however! I'm talking about headliners. Thus, the likes of Ms. Janelle M is discounted.

I was at the Queens and LOVED what they did with the voting for the setlist 'n all, but extraordinary? Nah.
