None of the artists Nal mentions are as mysterious as Bowie. Kate Bush is really the only remaining equivalent for me at least.

and her death would only be met with a collective shrug of the shoulders I'd imagine from the general public.

Bowie had the full package and no-one else comes close. Just ace things like turning down a knighthood stand him apart. Something the likes of macca and jagger couldnt resist.

There will be a contingent of very distraught fans, mark my words.  Nowhere near as widespread, I grant you, but don't underestimate the fervour of some Kate Bush fans.

Dylan is the most mysterious of all the big guns. Bowie was excellent at cultivating an image. Neiler to a certain degree too. Their output was considered.

Dylan is a genuine oddball and more of a mystery now than ever. He just does stuff and then seems to be equally miffed and not arsed about the publics reaction.

Doesn't mean anyone should be thought of in a higher regard than anyone else though.

Oh yeah for sure, but I mean the sort of people who will be painting a flash on their faces at glastonbury will not care a jot for kate bush (if they've even heard of her at all!)

Yep. None of the people the nal has listed will have anything like the impact when they die. Bowie transcended his music.

Admittedly the fact he wasnt even 70 did add a certain amount of shock factor.

And no one saw it coming, and he just had a cracking new album out, on his birthday. An incredible death.

I get your point, but we all have our favourites. I grew up listening to Bowie, never really got into Neil Young as per your example.

I was quoting Steven Wilson - I see that Bowie is one of a few but very few do have or had the same level of devotion or following that he did.

Agree 100%. I'd also add Tom Waits to my list.

This thread is hilarious.

So much snobbery. Do you guys really think you're the only ones who 'got' Bowie, and that you're the only ones entitled to mourn him?

People can do what they want. Everyone's experience is different and if they want to upload a pic of themselves, or wear facepaint, or all get together and have a sing in the name of Bowie, who cares?! How is that really any different to going on a forum 10 times a day and posting about how much you love him?

And if you don't believe that they know enough of his music or appreciated his cultural impact enough to be allowed to have an opinion... Get over it! It's none of your business.

Unless you're seen carrying around a mint condition copy of The Japanese promo pressing of "The Prettiest Star" on 7", packed in  a Japanese rice paper sleeve you have no right to an opinion on the man.

Yes, he did. But you're totally right. People keep confusing the Aladdin Sane lightning bolt with Ziggy!

Arguably, the Ziggy character was still active during the Aladdin Sane period, Bowie himself called the album 'Ziggy goes to America", but it doesn't make any lyrical references to the character so you could interpret it either way.  He was certainly backed by the full Spiders band and that record and it wasn't until the end of the Aladdin Sane tour that he retired the character.

So it's certainly not a hard error to say the lightning bolt was "Ziggy facepaint"

Listening to scary monsters and I've realised what the best tribute that glastonbury can do is.

The people who walk in front of the vehicles blowing their whistles to move everyone of the walkways should dress up as the Ashes to Ashes posse that walk in front of the jcb.

The Steven strange character has to bow every four or so steps. Would be genius.

Did you just describe your own idea as "genius"?

If it's genuine then they can do what they want. If it's attention-seeking or because it's the cool thing to do then I think it's perfectly reasonable to call it out.

"Everything wrong with the world" = Young

"Call it out" = Make gross generalisations

"Not knowing who the girl is" = Old (I don't)

Mick's guitar work is better on here than the record.  Were you looking at this video too to see if he was wearing makeup?

Yep! He is in a few, but not facepaint. Looked at a few and thats about the best sound there is. Superb.

Why is it reasonable? Other than to make yourself feel superior to somebody by trying to make them look stupid?

Got to disagree there, Dylan is at least as inspirational, mercurial, baffling and unknowable. No-one still has any clue what's going on in his head.

I don't buy (for me, anyway) all the hyperbole about Bowie being the end of an era or whatever. The only thing that shows is we're getting fucking old. We're turning into exactly the middle-aged people who couldn't understand the fuss when Kurt Cobain died.

If being baffling/unknowable is something to be celebrated then you're welcome to Dylan. Yes we want to be challenged as a fanbase dont wanna be insulted/spoonfed the artist should plough ahead at a pace and in a direction that they chose... Of course. But that leads to the fringes of cultural experience. Precisely where Dylan resides now. He should be a modern pop culture titan. That he choses not to be is a disappointment. Whats his record at Worthy Farm? 4pm in the day to a 1/4 full field. He's dwarfed by the likes of Waits and Shakey to me. Utterly.

He is. Wait for the fuss when he shuffles off this mortal coil. It'll be fucking mental, I'm sure.

Obviously I can only speak for myself, but Dylan outshines everyone else.

I don't think he really 'chooses' anything. He follows his muse, wherver it takes him, like Waits, Young etc. And like all of them, is to be celebrated, whatever path they walk.

the girl with the nirvana t-shirt posted a winking smiley, clearly indicating she was taking the piss.

pity people posting the image and whoever made it missed that part in their desperation to sneer and feel superior.....

Im speaking from a position of ignorance as I've never seen the man play live here, so forgive me.

It will be one of the great shames of my life if a document of the man's recent performing career is released that makes me go "FUCK!" - but I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it.

    • Proper special gig tonight. They won't mean much to most people, but The Dogs D'Amour were one of the most significant bands of my youth.   Tyla, yer main man of said band, was playing in Birkenhead tonight. Not many there, but it was going fine. Then he decided he didn't like the smoke and the flashing lights so suggested moving the gig to the beer garden. Off we all went, and it was magical. Like having your favourite musician play in your garden. I absolutely loved it.   Before:     After:
