What's the worst possible cover you could imagine?

I'll go for Ellie Goulding doing an a cappella version of Changes which is then subsequently used in some fucking mortgage advert to torment me for the next 6 months

Anything by la roux.

You know, I really hate that terd. In a tribute article she said her favourite bowie song was fascination, from young americans. She then went on to say:

"Young Americans has some bad tracks on it but it really influenced me and my last album."

Some bad tracks? That complete c**t who has put out some of the worst music known to man has the nerve to call bowie bad??

Staggering, outrageous stuff.

Oh God, that's horrendous. I hate her too. Awful!

Young Americans sits alongside Station to Station as my absolute favourite Bowie output. Bad tracks? Fuck right off with your stupid haircut and crap music.

I hope she doesn't make an appearance with New Order, though I think it's quite likely...

Yep, I love young americans too. It's right up the with his best work. It never seems to get much love sadly.

I wonder what songs she thinks are bad? Perhaps she's referring to across the universe. In which case she's not only slagging off bowie, but the lennon and mccartney too! Quite something coming from a woman devoid of all talent.

Here's the hideous article in full, and the link. The suggestion that people might listen to her album and think of Young Americans is utterly absurd. An awful narcissistic woman with absolutely no self-awareness whatsoever.

"Choosing your favourite Bowie song is a bit of an impossible question, but I think I would go for this track [Fascination] from Young Americans. There’s a smoothness and and a sexiness to it. He’s trying to reinterpret soul but not just doing it like some cringey white guy playing soul – he brings a certain kind of art and drama to it that’s all his own. I was watching a load of his performances recently and it really struck home how theatrical he could be. It’s so hard to do that – even Kate Bush can be irritating with it, but Bowie never was. As an artist, you’re always hoping for your influences to come out in your music, but not in an obvious way where people say “Oh, this sounds like this or that” – you want it to sound like you, and Bowie always sounded like Bowie, no matter what his influences were. Young Americans has some bad tracks on it but it really influenced me and my last album. There’s a guitar part in the second verse that plays against another guitar part, and when I heard that for the first time I think I cried with happiness for about 30 minutes. It felt like it had been written just for me, and that’s what Bowie could do with music."

To be fair it's probably the worst song he'd recorded so far in the 70s.  Not quite as bad as God Only Knows, which was utterly to-curlingly awful, but it is pretty bad.  I'm not sure why you quoted the rest of the interview.  In you remove the words  "has some bad tracks on it but it", then she comes across really well.  Several insightful comment, more on the mark than most of what is said on here about the album.

EDIT: If saying a cover is terrible is criticising the original artist, then what the fuck else are we doing today other than slagging Bowie off by talking about the terrible covers?

I doubt very much the halfwit even knows it's a cover. And anyway, it's decent.

She sad there are bad tracks, plural, on young americans. Which tracks are they I wonder? Which are these multiple bad tracks?

Bear in mind this is coming from a woman who has released some of the worst music in the last decade.

There's nothing else that springs to mind admittedly.  Took me years to get the new John, I'm Only Dancing, maybe that's it?  Who Can I Be is probably my least favourite of the others, but I wouldn't call it bad.

But Across The Universe isn't decent.  It's terrible.  Can you name a worse song he recorded before then?

Laughing gnome...

But I am not a fan of covers at the best of times, though I dont skip it so it has got something about it.

john I'm only dancing, who can I be now and it's gonna be me now werent on the 70s release of the album anyway so she cant have one of those as one of the "bad" tracks either! (though they are all ace)

Well, that might have been what she meant, dunno.  Those are probably the 'worst' tracks on the album.

I like Laughing Gnome!

Fucking hell, imagine if people started having outspoken opinions about pop music. On the internet. What would such a world be like?

I find her being appreciative but frank about Bowie to be extremely refreshing in amongst self-promoting also-rans falling over each other to deliver some sickeningly mawkish soundbite.

For me - I'm never close enough to see the actual band in high definition from where I'm standing, so if you put bowie on the big screens with some people on stage re-enacting the same gig it'll be pretty close to seeing him live for the first time (might have to add some drugs into the mix) so if they do replay the whole 2000 gig that'd be a great way to start off Glastonbury plus my last chance to see him almost live with a crowd singing their hearts out - probably my highlight!

If you're shit, you don't go around calling good people bad. It's the basics of self-awareness.

Being a huge fan since I can remember, and knowing a few years ago that it was going to be very unlikely I would see the legend himself live, this is probably as close as I will get...can't wait for a bowie singalong!

    • It'd be new album stuff if it were to happen I think.  First 2027 headliner in the bag also?

    • Hilarious to describe this as suprising, for the guy who can't afford to go on holiday, the guy who goes on holiday is rich, for the guy who goes on holiday, the guy who gets 3 holidays a year is rich, for the guy who gets 3 holidays, the guy who stays in 5* hotels is rich, for the guy who stays in 5* hotels, the guy that flies business class is rich, for the guy who flies business class the guy with a private jet is rich etc..   I think one of the greens video's that they put out that went viral, Zacks description of "the rich" covered 12 people in the UK.
