Sleep Banking...is it worth it?

Mrs P has the ability to push through, but I struggle with less than 8 hours on a work night so getting a few earlys in was going to be my approach this year...her argument is that doing so will set my body clock to expect 10 hours or so and I'll crash way too early when there.

Hence her theory that you need to get used to less sleep beforehand....

Dispel yourself of the notion that you need 8 hours a night. That's not actually what the body prefers if left to a natural sleep cycle. More frequent sleeps of much shorter time are perfect, so just supplement the hours you'll lose at night with an hour or two kip, either in your tent or dozing watching a film or whatever in the mid-late afternoon, and you'll be fine. The body can tolerate upheaval when it comes to sleep if it knows it's temporary, as well.

Don't forget that stimulants and adrenaline will help push you through and keep you going, and come Monday, you can sleep as much as you want.

I get very very little sleep 2-3 hours on a work night. And 5-6 if its a late start, i rarely have problems getting up. I normally have a nap after work for an hour or so. Although Sundays I sleep in for about 10-12 hours and I'm refreshed for the next week.

I'm pretty used to this so being up till the early hours at glasto will be no problem. I am however taking the previous week off work for the world cup so will be well rested for the fest.

I find it's different at festivals, I can keep going on 4 or 5 hours' sleep a night. Just like the way that hangovers don't happen at festivals, and how it's acceptable to have scrumpy for breakfast: our bodies seem to work differently when camping. Field rules.

It's only the first night I struggle with, having got up early for a day of travelling and lugging heavy bags.

I'm an early to bed early to rise person normally, particularly when it gets light early - at the moment going to bed around 10 and getting up about 5 or 6 which is the opposite times (about 5-10 am) which would be my preference at glasto. I will try and adjust in between - late nights, trying to sleep in and occasional naps on the days leading up to the festival. Have the weekend off, late start at work on monday and day off tuesday so hoping to gradually adjust my body clock.

i always plan / try on getting loads of sleep before the festival so that the five days with a lack of sleep won't be so bad, but i'm always far too excited and so end up getting a shitty sleep anyway (coupled with the fact that i have to leave at midnight Wednesday and so have to attempt to sleep through daytime Tuesday)

always seem to manage at the festival. 5 or 6 hours sleep (probably less) is enough for me to function

On work days I normally surive on 4-5 hours sleep, normally I sleep at 3amish and wake up at half 7. So I can cope on little sleep, I'm just a moody c**t for the first hour or 2 of the day. I always try to get a good sleep the night before I set off but I never can as I'm always too excited. :D

The only other time i have heard about sleep banking is in an interview that Ellen Macarther gave after sailing round the world.

She definitely said that she banked a good few hours befor her trip where apparantly she slept about five hours a day in naps (average nap 36 minutes)for about three months.
