Been pleased with the majority of reactions to this. Mostly "hooray" or "I'll give it a go" or "there's plenty else on" and not too much "what is metal doing at Glastonbury?". Apart from one really snobby item on the Guardian website, coming from the metal rather than non-metal angle, and from a writer from whom I would expect better.

Metallers are, at times, one of the worst things about metal. The music's pretty decent in comparison but the 'brave' people who see themselves as the custodians of it can give it a slightly negative edge.

Yes, Metallica's music is much more straightforward and accessible than either of those songs.

Listening to a lot of it over the last few days, it's pretty obvious that mostly what Metallica specialise in is pop songs. Aside from the thrashy arrangements, their stuff is pretty accessible and melodic. It even verges on MOR in places.

I'd somewhat agree, does depend on the song but they do have the capacity to make the melody the king and let everything else take a back seat like pop writers do. Something that a lot of other metal bands are incapable of ha.

"Everyone up and down the country keeps asking when we are going to book them." No they don't. You're thinking of the Rolling Stones/Led Zeppelin/Daft Punk/Prince.

"They're great live." You've never, ever seen them.

"I love Enter Sandman, have you heard it?" Someone played this to me/told me to remember the name of it and now I'm mentioning it to pretend I'm a fan, unaware that it was a massive hit years ago.

In fairness, I understand that this is a better line to take than 'Fleetwood Mac are dropping like flies, we couldn't get anyone else, so we had to bump up a band I don't really like/know anything about from the Other Stage'!

I'd go with that, which is part of the reason I think they'll go down so well. It's different, but accessible enough I'd say.

Interesting article. I could have related to that about 15 years ago; a lot of Metal fans have a very 'us against them' attitude and their approach to the music they listen to is borderline possessive, and I think had I still shared that attitude, I'd probably say exactly the same thing. On the other hand, thinking back to 15 years ago, I'd all but given up on Metallica anyway as had a lot of Metal fans, so it wouldn't have mattered to me if they decided to play at Glastonbury then or if they decided to release an album featuring a fucking orchestra. Oh, they did the latter. I remember now.

I took a long time away from Metal for years but started rediscovering it again after I went to Download 2012 and then a few Metal gigs after for no reason other than by impulse, and it helped me rediscover my love for that music and the fans. Time is a healer for me and I couldn't really give a shit now about Metallica's musical sex crimes so long as they wang out Damage Inc or Battery over Until It Sleeps, but I have a feeling they'll play their more popular songs rather than ones fans would know; fans who would have bought a ticket to see Metallica rather than because they just wanted to be at Glastonbury, not expecting Metallica.

What'll annoy me is being a fan of metal going to Glastonbury (or a fan of music generally) in a crowd of people who aren't really open-minded or at least aware of the kind of macho, not-at-all-girly mentality you'll get at somewhere like Download, or are likely to be condescending to it; is it going to be circle pits full of people wearing straw hats who've just come from Henley not knowing what to do, as they dart in and out of camping chairs? It won't annoy me those sort of people are there but I'd say, you're probably not a fan of metal but you're at a metal gig so make the most of it, have a good time, be aware and don't be condescending to the audience who know what to do. When people barge into you, don't take it personally, and if you go into a circle pit, pick others up when they fall down. If you're going to be a c**t, don't see Metallica; go and see Bryan Ferry on West Holts.

not sure about this bit. I want to go and see them, to see what the band is all about. I dont expect to get shoved around and barged into though, and will be very disappointed if this happens.

I dont expect to have to read a rule book of how to behave before going to see band. I want to be able to watch the band in peace, nothing more nothing less.
