Metallica 2014

I went to Download in 2012 and saw Metallica headline.

We were reasonably close, to the left hand side. Granted, not in the very main section at the front, but not far off. It was a pretty piss-weak crowd.

QOTSA on the Other Stage in 2011 was rowdier.

Download wasn't the crazy mosh-pit experience I was maybe expecting. It too has probably been diluted down a bit by all the camera-wavers.

In short, I don't think you're going to see any pushy-shovy nonsense this year.

not sure about this bit. I want to go and see them, to see what the band is all about. I dont expect to get shoved around and barged into though, and will be very disappointed if this happens.

I dont expect to have to read a rule book of how to behave before going to see band. I want to be able to watch the band in peace, nothing more nothing less.

It's a metal band. They play Metal music. Metal is aggressive. Fans of metal have a propensity for being aggressive to reflect the aggression of the music. That aggression, however, is not without some degree of etiquette, and for all the aggression, the vast majority of fans of Metal are good hearted people with a lot of passion for the music they listen to, and have a lot of enthusiasm and energy

On the other hand, fans of Metal won't necessarily be at Glastonbury so the likelihood is you'll have a lot of people who aren't necessarily interested in the music and won't reflect that aggression back at the band that plays it for them, which creates the curious sight of a lot of people standing around not doing a lot whilst a band (occasionally) plays extremely energetic music. Imagine a DJ being at a rave but nobody dancing - that'll be my fear when Metallica play at Glastonbury. If, however, people do wish to engage with the music, they need to learn how to understand the etiquette of Metal, and respect it, rather than use it as an excuse to beat the shit out of each other.

Basically, you'll be fine at the back if you just want to listen to it in peace. Though the concept of listening to Metal in peace is an oxymoron.

Is right. Take a look at some of the more recent shows posted in this thread, you will get rowdier crowds in Silver Hays.

What'll annoy me is being a fan of metal going to Glastonbury (or a fan of music generally) in a crowd of people who aren't really open-minded or at least aware of the kind of macho, not-at-all-girly mentality you'll get at somewhere like Download, or are likely to be condescending to it; is it going to be circle pits full of people wearing straw hats who've just come from Henley not knowing what to do, as they dart in and out of camping chairs? It won't annoy me those sort of people are there but I'd say, you're probably not a fan of metal but you're at a metal gig so make the most of it, have a good time, be aware and don't be condescending to the audience who know what to do. When people barge into you, don't take it personally, and if you go into a circle pit, pick others up when they fall down. If you're going to be a c**t, don't see Metallica; go and see Bryan Ferry on West Holts.

Shouldn't rise to this but wow - nothing condescending about your attitude to people going to Glastonbury is there?

Clearly you'll be approaching this with an open mind!

Give yourself a big pat on the back when you're knocking over teenagers who are just out wanting to enjoy themselves - especially if they're wearing straw hats.

Alternatively calm down and grow up a little bit.

It's a heritage rock band in the heritage rock slot - nothing more, nothing less.

How will I know if this aggression is the correct type of aggression, as defined by the agression etiquette?

Stick to Download chief.

I think what I'm trying to say is, the reality of it is there's not likely to be any circle pits or mosh pits at Glastonbury but if there are, don't get involved in them if you think it's a perfect antidote to not moving an inch whilst watching Elbow only to move your fist into somebody's face just because they get a tiny bit 'bargey' next to you. Those who don't understand the etiquette involved in being at a Metal gig are often the most dangerous, or at the very least the most condescending.

Dave,

Am considering being at Metallica. Could you give me some pointers on correct etiquette for such an occasion?

it's not a metal gig though, it's a metal band at glastonbury.

I just want to watch the band in the same way I would any other band. I dont want to have to go to the back or risk being pushed/hit.

Sure. Don't be a c**t to people who are enthusiastic and show their enthusiasm by barging into you. Don't look down on people who want to do it either. If anything, barge back. You're at a Metal gig. Enjoy yourself.

Dude its a metal band at a pop festival. The band and its hardcore group of fans in attendance will have to adapt - not the other way round.

As far as mosh pits are concerned, I first saw Metallica at Donington Monsters of Rock in 198???.

Enter Sandman had just come out, and as it built up my brother said "this will get rough" I laughed, in the way that 15 year old 10st 6'4" sticks do, and got pumelled when it kicked in.

I was going down in the crowd and a massive guy basically pulled me up by my hair and put me down again a safe distance back.

So although it was rough, I was helped. :)

There will be nothing like this at Glastonbury, they are a crossover band with lots of short haired fans who probably like dance music too.

They'll do a great set, some will love it, some will hate it.

But seeing how it's drummed up so much publicity, I'd say it's already been a win for the festival.

I first saw Metallica nearly 20 years ago. If some pup starts a wall o' death or a circle beside me with the Mrs and 6 month old theyre getting put on their backs.

Or just walk away from it and let them get on with it.

If me and 20 or 30 other people decide to do that, as often happens at Metal gigs (and it is a Metal gig; it's just at Glastonbury, as said), you'll either be the one of the several thousand on the outside shaking their heads and folding their arms not really knowing how to react other than with contempt for the hoodlums running amok/enjoying themselves, letting us get on with it because we aren't causing any harm to anybody else - just each other - or you'll be getting involved. If you DO decide to get involved, understand that it's good natured fun when somebody decides to barge into you and not an excuse for you to punch them in the face.

If a Metal fan's way of appreciating the music they listen to, is to do that, don't be a c**t to them because 99.9% of the time, they aren't being c**ts to you, and if they are, they aren't Metal fans. Granted, it is a pop music festival, but Metallica headlining makes it 'Metal Night' on Saturday on the Pyramid Stage, so either dress up for the occasion and understand that rules are subject to change, or don't. Either way, don't be condescending to people who want to show how much they enjoy the music in the manner they see fit. If that manner so happens to be a mosh pit, either move away and watch with a smile on your face or get involved and don't be a c**t.
