Metallica 2014

they're definitely playing the Saturday (have it listed on tour dates i believe) and the way they're ordered on the lineup poster (between Skrillex and Massive Attack) definitely makes it look like they're an Other headliner

of course that's all subject to change now that Metallica are seemingly headlining. would be weird to put a band who were seemingly meant to be subbing Metallica, up against Metallica

The positioning on the poster suggested that to me too, but their site has 27th-29th as tour dates. Maybe some reshuffling is happening.

But Metallica is also as dull as dishwater to fans of those bands, which is a big part of the reason why the older metallers in the early/mid 80s predominantly had no interest in Metallica.

That's probably true - I've been giving them the occasional whirl recently and for me a little of it goes a long way. They're clearly pretty good at one thing, but they don't half paint with a pretty narrow palette.

which is gonna be the crux of it i think - not really a band that many will think 'i didn't like that last song, but i like this one!'. if people aren't a fan of what they're hearing to begin with, they'll leave and not wait around to hear more. just gonna depend on how many metal fans / people willing to give it a real shot are already at this years festival

Autoninflate's posts are becoming laughable. Agressive rock fans? Loved up dance music fans? People have already pulled your posts apart so there's not much point in me continuing. I did like the dig at anamatronic spiders though. There's clearly no place for that sort of thing at Glastonbury, no dance music fan would be seen anywhere near it, it they did, they'd wet themselves laughing and run away to Arcadia. oh... hang on. The crux of your argument seems to be "I don't like them... WAAAAHHH!"

no the crux of my argument is that metal is shit, you know - intrinsically shit. that's why they don't have it at glastonbury....it's a festival that has good taste in music. you wander the site and hear good sounds day and night, not shit metal.

Yup - and to what extent the people not getting into it start to build up into a critical mass - or even a mass exodus.

If you're there for the first 20 minutes - regardless of whether you're loving it or hating it - it probably isn't going to get either any better or any worse thereafter.

genuinely, if people can't see this as a risky, intriguing booking, I'm baffled. Are certain posters on here really so confident that that field will be rammed?

Mardy, im a massive fan of metallica, never in my wildest dreams did I think Id ever get to see them at Glasto and until I see their name on that lineup poster I still wont believe it.

That being said I agree with you thats its the one of the most risky bookings Glasto has made and I dont think they'll pull a big crowd. I think the crowd will be decent enough for them to pull of a headline set with a great atmosphere and considering Ive seen them before I know they'll deliver on the performance.

genuine question: is it set in stone that Pixies will be headlining the Other on Saturday?

Agreed. I think there's hope for us non-metal/old school rock fans of something different on the other stage.

You do realise that you're talking about a festival that put Mumford & Sons in a prominent slot last year?

with arctic monkeys and rolling stones the other two nights, they could have had mumford and sons play a ten hour all day set complete with two-hour beard trimming interlude, and I wouldn't have complained.

My lot are delighted Metallica are set for Saturday headliner. The ones who love them are really impressed, the ones that don't know them are giving them a go as they've not seen them before!

My favourite band is Slipknot, so I'm like really into metal. I can't quite get into Metallica though. Although I will say they put on a great show. I'm still just super happy Dolly Parton is playing! :)

I'm sorry, this is my first post in this bit - I've tried to read most of it but it's much easier to ask.... Where has all the certainty of a Metallica Headliner come from? Insider knowledge or a tip from somewhere? I don't understand and this is a genuine question I'm not trying to have a dig or anything!

I certainly fall in to that category. Friends that I have mentioned Metallica to( and I do know a great number of people of all ages who always go to Glastonbury) have almost unanimously said that they won't be going anywhere near the P stage on the Sat night. As has already been said, this is a huge risk for GFL.

I predict a fairly large crowd initially which rapidly evaporates when people either don't particularly enjoy what they are hearing or don't recognise any of the songs.

Be interesting to see what happens.

Oh, an excellent post my Mardy a couple of pages ago.

And has Skrilex in a prominent position this year.

The source is eFestivals (Neil). Metallica are 100% signed up and will headline the Pyramid stage unless Prince accepts the offer that is still open to him. Chances of that are very small (If he does Metallica will be other stage). Due to the reliability of eFestivals in naming headliners it's accepted as truth.

although this far in, with only weeks, if not days until the full lineup is announced, i think it's safe to say that the offer for Prince to headline has been and gone and that it's definitely Metallica

In your opinion. in my opinion charty dance music is shit. but this is Glastonbury and there is something for everyone, you want your dance all over the shop do creamfields, I want my heavy rock / metal acts I'll go to download. Glastonbury inst about one genre - that's prob we all go, and why we all constantly talk about it on here. Each to their own, go and be somewhere else Saturday night and enjoy, leave the people who want to enjoy Metallica to it. personally I wont be anywhere else, I am so buzzing about Metallica its untrue. But the Sunday I will be elsewhere enjoying myself in the many sights / sounds Glastonbury has to offer
