I definitely agree that certain labels are pushing female artists in to this stupid culture of airbrushed bollocks (Avril Lavigne comes to mind) but I'd hate to think there is discrimination against females when selecting a festival line up.

I love talented female artists but personally prefer male singers, mainly because they are easier to sing a long to (in the same key) and usually write songs that as a male myself, I can relate to. Nothing to do with a question of their talent or superiority as a gender.

:sarcastic:

Well it is true. To an extend. A very limited extent. Someone has decided that they are appropriate for the slot based on their music (plus popularity).

I don't care what the members of the band/group are, I like them because of their music.

I'm sure there ARE barriers against women succeeding in indie and rock but it's those that should be addressed, not attacking a festival that just puts on what the fans ask for.

Man you hate having your man spaces challenged.

The only thing challenged here is your intellect. You are arguing the same point as me fuck knuckle.

Going back to Manics, they're a real weird one, they sell out tours, their albums go number one still, even sold out an arena tour, yet they're never in with a shout of headlining a major festival, why is that? Why the belief they aren't good enough? I don't understand why Andy won't book them for Download, I just don't yet he booked Skunk Anansie and gave them 3rd from top and now won't touch them either. Skunk Anansie headlined Glasto! [yes they filled in I know] Ash headlined in 1997! [another fill in] Pyramid stage. Both of them.

I went the last big Manics tour and it was a dreadful plodding dad-rock show (an I am a big fan from the early days). Having seen Skunk a couple of years back too they were amazing. Stick them on the big stage and they'd go down a treat like they always have.

I agree that it's an industry-wide problem rather than just a particular festiva. But I think it's also true that the aspiration of many more young girls is to be Beyoncé or Gaga and admired than peforming at rock fests to a load of dudes. It is beyond my mental capacity to think of a way to switch that and probably stretches beyond the music industry itself.

by giving those girls some 'role models' (gawd, I hate that phrase) who aren't like Beyonce or GaGa .....?

Monkey see monkey do.

Whatever it takes, really. Festivals have an influence on the media, so they do have a role to play in that.

I guess but I wouldn't think it's enough. Also it's an easier avenue for established fests (not R+L obviously) just to just have Beyoncé and Gaga at festivals now isn't it? Which would just breed more pop starlets for a few years of fame.

Special Guest Dance: Jack U, Dog Blood (something skirled related due to his SW4 announcement, but not just plain Skrillex), Major Lazer, Fatboy Slim?

Been saying for a while that Oliver Heldens will play.. seems to have high slots across Europe in summer so I can see it happening (not so 'special' but R&L are just marketing their next announcement).

I disagree about Bring me the Horizon not being suitable for the festival. Virtually all my mates like them even though some are not normally fans of that genre of music. I'd argue Metallica are the band on the line up that stand out the most as not fitting in with the clientele. Festival goers are getting younger and younger (on average). I reckon the majority of Metallica fans are 30+yo. I'll still be there though :P

nah its not so much that they don't fit at all....i just think that sub heading is a slot that is too big for them....3rd main at most, ill still see them and hope to be pleasantly surprised, but that slot on the MainStage is usually taken up by some huge international bands/acts.....just my 2 cents

yeah can see him playing but not headline dance...in the past the dance headliners have had an element of theatrics of a 'live' show, Helens has neither.......2manydjs would be a great one though

A few people have been commenting about why it only seems to be US bands given those kind of slots so personally I am pleased to see BMTH there.

I think they deserve and their new record this year will hopefully go some way to convince people they deserve it.

Its been said here before though, historically their live performances haven't been great, heard good things about their Wembley gig though.

In regard to the 'lack of women acts at r&l' issue, I think it's right to suggest it's an issue across the industry rather just at R&L. I don't see R&L as particularly struggling with it - Paramore did headline last year after all, and can see Florence headlining in the near future. There's more of an issue with attitudes towards bands with women in - the amount of times I've heard people refer to Paramore as gay (for seemingly no other reason than they have a female front) is just saddening. Entirely uneducated on this topic so just my mostly ignorant thoughts.

yeah can see that, would just be nice to obviously see an album out from then before R&L (this could be in the works, i don't know, not done my research...) but I'm sure it'll be good....in 2013 everyone was saying all weekend about how good they were then, so I'm excited to see what they're like....last time i saw them was 2008 opening MainStage and i thought they were dreadful (couldn't make out any of the songs, and was still wildly bitter about Slipknot cancelling)

    • Ghost did it on their last tour  and there was a whole article of people complaining about it at the Manchester gig cause somehow they werent informed and didnt know why there was a massive queue to enter the venue. At MSG everyone was given a souvenir ticket which had their seat info written on it so you knew where go to. Itll be fine.
    • If anyone happens to have a Sunday ticket (or two) to sell then I would be interested in buying for face value. Thanks!
    • NIN and Bjork for sure 😉
    • When are  the stage splits ??
    • 13th Primavera (Thursday was definitely making me feel like this was the cursed year).  Blood Orange was such a party by the end of their set but we all knew that rain storm was approaching.  So gutted Massive Attack didn't play after the false hope of a new rescheduling, especially knowing that Elizabeth Fraser & Horace Andy were backstage with them!  Managed a bit of Melt Banana but was just so over the weather by that point.   Friday was awesome, Rilo Kiley were so much fun.  Never been the biggest Cure fan but made the effort for them after Thursday & Robert Smith sounds like he did back in the 80s.  PinkPantheress & Viagra Boys were also great.   The highlight for me was Sudan Archives on the Saturday, she was stunning & with the Olivia Rodrigo surprise set too it made up for the Thursday sh*t show.  Dijon & Knocked Loose also superb.   Shoutout to Cardiacs on the Tuesday too, they were so LOUD, played a storming set.
