Pet hate - talking through sets

Depends on the gig Im at and to what extent people are "being disruptive" but I am certainly not going to expect thousands of people not to interact with each other and talk during a gig.........thats ridiculous.

I get the whole "yabbering on, not interested in the gig, talking on a phone, sqauking like a dick" person who will make anyone's blood boil..........but to expect near to total silence during gigs is ludicrous.

Sushers can be annoying saps at gigs. I was at a Godspeed you! Black Emperor gig one time and a guy I was with never saw them before and during the gig he was so excited that he would now and again turn to me simply to say "ah man, this is brilliant", "Wow", "Fuck me this is good", "Aw, that visual is so apt for this tune" etc etc............Now to me this sort of carry on is perfectly acceptable at a gig. FFS it is the appreciation of the gig that is triggering this in him..........its great that someone gets this excited about live music.............

Well if the poor git was not sushed to death nearly by these comatosed knob jockeys that were swaying and gawking in front of us............fuck off ..........people appreciate gigs in different ways and to expect someone to keep stum so as you can wallow in your moment while in fact you are not allowing someone to enjoy theirs is selfish.

Absolute pet hate of mine- not so much at festivals as others have said not everyone in the crowd is there to see that particular artist but at gigs it really does annoy me and I have moved numerous times at gigs so wasn't near the constant chatterers- fair enough the odd conversation like do you want a beer, that was a good song etc. but those that talk all the way through do my head in. Why bother paying for a ticket to stand there gabbing all the time- stay at home listen to the CD and have your inane conversations there.

I don't expect total silence at during bands/at a gig I don't get the point of heading to the middle/front to have a full blown conversation about the merits of getting back with your cheating boyfriend, even going so much as to turn your back to the act...

It just seems weird to me to do that *shrugs*

People at gigs should show respect to the artist by shutting their cakehole throughout. You don't like the set, leave.

You like the music, and want to express it, there are gaps between the songs for that. Or whispering in your friends ear.

For Jake Bugg I moved and moved forward to try and get away from people talking over him, until I was right near the front barrier and still amongst people that were squawking loudly about their pizza! Totally distracting for a set with such an acoustic sound.

Of course people can talk, and singalong etc, - I am happy with any noise that is about being into what is happening in front of you, but I'd just like people to understand that having a full scale conversation about something else entirely does ruin the atmosphere of the gig for those around you.

If you just want to chat to your mates, go further back. If you just want to get a spot for the next act on stage, then just button it and respect that there are others around you who want to enjoy what's on now.

I only find this to be a problem at the pyramid/John Peel/Other - all other stages tend to be full of people that actually want to be there (all the people not interested in the music go to the big stages I guess).

Solution - turn up the sound! :) It's always satisfying seeing a group trying to talk but the music being so loud they cant hear each other, causing them to leave. If the sound is as bad as it was at times at the Other stage then no wonder people will talk - they can barely hear the music

Had this group next to me for mumfords and prior to the start they where being a good laugh, albeit a bit steaming. The set started and one of them, a quite large girl (not being sizeist but we're talking laws of physics), tried the ambitious action of getting on a lads shoulders which ended in me having a puddle of humanity lying at my feet. Still I found this in good humour and took it as people enjoying themselves.

However the novelty wore off, the enjoyment leaked out like that bag of plums I left on my shelf for 6 months and forgot about, and boredom creeped in like the harmful bacteria that followed. All I heard for the majority of the set from there on was how this girl was indeed "single, but not desperate", and that "he could go fuck himself" because she can do so much better. All fascinating stuff and I'm really interested to see what happened next, and if she did in fact do better, but I cant help but feel I was missing out on a higher level of entertainment somewhere along the line. Furthermore in between the mind numbing conversation, during the quieter less known songs, they decided it was the right time to belt out some wolf howls.

The only time I've ever really had another person effect my experience of a set/gig in anyway. Someone pissed on my leg during a kasabian gig a few years ago and I got over that pretty quickly, but this was so loud and constant that it was ridiculous.

Relating to ridiculous actions, and moving away from the talking point, I managed to catch Arctic Monkeys through an Ipad as someone in front decided they were deviating from a standard phone/camera, to make it very clear they are keeping up with the Jones'. This didn't really annoy me as I was more baffled at the time that someone would a) block peoples views totally unnecessarily to show off their toy (would there be any other reason to lug this around) B) that you'd even bother bringing something of that value. Could do with a hand next year holding up my desktop computer with built in webcam. Need someone to hold up the printer if possible.

I've had many occasions when I've had to ask people to shut up.

Most notable was Fleet Foxes in Manchester Apollo a few years back where Robin came on to do a song completely acoustically (no PA, just voice and guitar) for the encore to 4000 people. And guess what, people talked through it! Unbelievable.

And another one was a couple having a full blown domestic during a Rammstein gig. Telling people to be quiet at a fecking RAMMSTEIN gig was something I never thought I'd have to do!

I was halfway between the stage and the sound desk for The XX - who I was most looking forward to seeing the whole weekend - after worming my way through a pretty relaxed crowd. I was followed by a chain of about 10 people who, instead of carrying on to get closer, stopped in front of me. That's annoying as it is, THEN two girls climbed straight up on to boys shoulders, annoying thing #2. The group didn't shut up talking for a single song while they planned how "fucked up" they were going to get later (annoying thing #3) so I, very politely, asked them to quiet down for a little while (seriously, The XX practically whisper through a set) and got the reply "fuck off you fat bitch why don't you just move". Nearly made it through a G without crying.

Still my favourite of 8 festivals though :)

Similar to my XX experience, might have even been the same people. Wasnt too far from the stage, centre left, group of young girls and a guy who looked a lot older than all of them... talked and screamed and instagrammed through the whole thing, the guy and a girl kept hugging each other and swaying back and forth into me. Then at the end she got on his shoulders and took her top off.

I didnt care too much as i was just tagging along to watch the XX and thought they were boring as fuck

in fact the girl getting her tits out was the highlight of their set

    • So bad honestly. I get that bad weather happens but their communication was non existent. When you're managing crowds of tens of thousands of people, it's just not good enough. I left when Massive Attack was cancelled (the first time) and it genuinely did feel unsafe trying to get out. No one knew what was going on, people still sitting in the ground when there were hoards of people trying to leave, no crowd management at all...   I've been to PS enough times to know sometimes you need to just roll with it but this was way worse than "the bar queue was 30 minutes long".    Today will be better but still feel super disappointed.
