Is Nick Cave as a sub the wrong choice?

As the title says ....

I've spent the evening acquainting myself with bands and artists that I'm not familiar with ... Judging by the line up poster Nick Cave is subbing Mumford and the biggest artist that I don't know much about. So have spent some good time listening over alot of his work ... Which I must say I have telly enjoyed.

My point is this ... Is he not a bit lacking in the big numbers needed to be a sub I.e. 2011 Morrissey, Elbow and Pendulum or will his style suit the final night crowd who will be gathering for Mumfords????

In my humble, very new to his music opinion the Other or a tented stage would suit his music far more??

are we 100% Sure he's subbing? surely we won't know properly till day splits etc are announced.... there could still be someone else yet..... and I only have a slight idea who he is... never properly listened to his stuff though

I'm not narrow minded in my music but honestly I had never heard of Nick Cave until the rumours started last year & only in the past month have I found out what he looks like.

I'm not saying he's not huge, influential etc but I'm surprised I don't know who he is.

However, the name Nick Cave is making me not arsed to youtube him which is narrow minded of me.

I personally find his music, clever... but also boring.

I think he's one of these subs with a big name, and I think him subbing actually makes mumfords look much bigger!

I find it abit weird he's not playing the friday though... personally.

It's probably not the right slot for him/them, but that's down to the fact its before Mumford, but due to the stature, there's very few other slots that would fit.

I'd swap him and Dizzee round, especially if Vaccines are before Dizzee.

he went down really well subbing blur. i don't see there being much crossover between his and mumford's audience, however...

In all seriousness, he's one of the most discussed acts on this forum. He's subbed twice before and, if anything, is more popular now (album and ticket sales suggest so, anyway) and so it would be ridiculous to have him playing lower. He also seems to like "subbing" on the Sunday (2009 and 1998). The reality is lots of people won't like it but the people who do like it will love it. The Pyramid field on the Sunday will be full of people waiting for Mumfords (they're f***ing huge, whether people on here like it or not) and lots of other acts wouldn't want the slot - Nick and the Bad Seeds seem to thrive on this challenge; they were superb in 2009 but over half the field were too busy checking they knew all the words to "Parklife" to notice.

I'd genuinely love him to have been the Sunday headliner because his music definitely suits the dark, he's paid his dues, has a huge back catalogue to draw on and I love just about everything he's ever done but it would have confused lots of other people because he hasn't ever really lit up the charts. Which is why the festival has Mumford & Sons and scraped the barrel with Beyonce last time.

He is a really interesting artist, but in my opinion the critics over-rate him. If you want to explore I'd recommend starting at Murder Ballads which is accessible and also great fun (contains the hit with Kylie 'where the wild roses grow'). My best advice would be if you're not already into his music by Glastonbury then a safer bet to go see a different act as much of his music isn't immediate.

I agree with the last four points mostly, though not with the over-rated bit (I'm biased though! ). He derves a spot that high up, but I would have rejoiced if he was headlining the Park that night. PERFECT. Massive peak followed by a trough when I saw the line-up and pennies started to clang into place.

As people have said though Russy, even though they're musically vacuous, on paper, to a global audience they're a big deal to have top of the tree as millions of sheep who like what radio tells them to like think they're good. While not a "coup" so to speak, for the festivals profile, it makes sense. I feared it would happen.

On the bright side - it means they probably won't play for another 5-7 years, by which time they'll have been found out...

Indeed. I understand why mumfords are headlining, but it amuses me that people in this thread call nick cave "boring"(!!!!) and "overrated", yet I have never seen any of these people make complaint about mumfords headlining. Their silence implies happy acceptance of this situation.

Like you, I just wish nick cave as playing in the dark somewhere, I dont mind much what stage. I guess john peel would have been ideal.

They headlined the main stage at latitude and brought the house down in front of a massive crowd. It staggers me that the crowd at latitude are more clued up than the glastonbury crowd.

Have to say I am utterly shocked that some people have never heard of Nick Cave. I mean, I mean...It's Nick Cave! I'm guessing it's the same people that struggled with placing Neil Young or Ian Brown. I won't go as far as screaming philistines but for fucks sake!
