For any fans of TV On The Radio and a hint of Black Keys you should check out a band called "The Heavy" had 3 albums out and only just heard of them. Check out Curse Me Good and Short Change Hero for starters. I'm hoping they play somewhere

For those into 60's Garage (as in the various Nuggets box sets) try the Allah-Lah's new album.

Great stuff - definitely worth a look next year as I reckon they might be there. This sounds like Black Lips/ early REM/ Buffalo Springfield/ Strokes

Oohhh yes! What a journey you have ahead of you, you bastard! You know when people say "Id love if I only discovered Star Wars/The Godfather films/Beatles/Wine/Guacamole etc now"?

I've recently got the Duke Ellington Centennial Edition boxset. It is fucking fantastic. Glorious glorious glorious stuff. 24 CDs spanning the 1920s to the very end.

But if you're going to start, I'd recommend these:

Ellington Uptown - Nice warm stuff. A bit of swing in it, some incredible piano playing but not in the Art Tatum sort of show off style. Ellington wasn't a show off. Always respected the musicians around him and let them shine when needed. Sounds lovely too, very well recorded.

Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington - The Great Summit. Very Duke Ellington, minimalist piano playing that really showcases his sparse piano lines, accenting the notes he does play. That old jazz thing. Louis Armstrong singing and playing with Ellington on piano. Whats not to like?

The Great Paris Concert - Live, no overdubs, raw and really showcases the excitement of jazz and how good his band are.

Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins - Just really good fun music. Uptempo stuff most of it. A little "world music" in parts too.

I'd stay clear of standard greatest hits. He had a prolific 50 year music career thats never, or never will be, matched and worked with almost everyone so a single greatest hits does not do him justice. Also raincheck the 1920/30s ragtime sort of stuff which isn't stunning, due to the quality of the recordings.

Its winter - musical tastes need to change. Duke Ellington will keep you warm until spring!

Been championing these since I saw them back in April. 3 sisters from LA called Haim, pretty poppy on record but live they're something else - very bluesy and rocky and great personalities. They're gonna be massive, I have no doubts about it.

Hopefully seeing them again next week at KCLSU in London.
