Green Day's last three album's might've bombed (largely due to poor singles, rush releases and Bille's breakdown meaning they couldn't promote them properly) but they haven't played Reading and Leeds in nine years (not including the secret set last year) so i can imagine people are awaiting their next headline set, whereas RHCP's last headline show is still in recent memory, and not for good reasons

i think Green Day will be the third headliner, anyway. it's been a long time coming and they'll be big ticket sellers

They bombed horribly, 3 albums and I doubt many would be happy to see one track off the 3 of them in their setlist. I can understand your reasoning, but secret set last year+Emirates gig this year+failure of 3 albums and a pretty crap album before that doesn't make them very appealing. Yes Chili's will be in recent memory for some, but 6 years is enough of a gap I think, not that much different to Green Days 9, there will be a lot of people in their teen's/early 20's who didnt get to see them pre-hiatus and would be pretty excited for it. But that's just relevant in my judgement that the chili's are more popular than Green Day nowadays, so disagreement is fair enough.

In terms of these headliners, its all good slating them all, but who else is there, or who would you like to see? You can't bump up loads of headliners in the same year, and they already have done with Biffy (an amazing booking in my opinion), so it's gonna be an established rock headliner (you'd expect)

Green Day - they are still a legendary punk band, who in my opinion got bad with the rock opera albums. At least Uno was a return to short punk song form, and the secret show last year looked amazing, and in demand

Chilis - Shit 2007 show. Fact. But they have sorted themselves out it sounds like, the new shows sound amazing at least, and they were pretty much the biggest band in the world mid 2000's.

Linkin Park - Nu Metal, would suit above system, don't play UK often, and their new album (again, opinion) is much more a return to form then the 1 before which they were showcasing at download 11. One of the biggest "Nu Metal" bands, and Hybrid Theory is a classic.

Metallica - New material to showcase maybe, festival whores, but the biggest METALZ band ever. Even if they do remind us EVERY YEAR with a show or 18.

etc etc ect

You forget that more than half of the festival pairs audience didn't get to see free day last year, with no set a Leeds and it being so early. I was a fan of both in their hayday. If much prefer green day to chilis. Better sing alongs, better hits. Chilis last two are as bad if not worse than gd 3.

to be honest both bands are pretty damn past it now - Chili's (in my opinion) haven't released a good album in 11 years now, and Green Day got a lucky second win with American Idiot but they've totally killed that off with the failure of their recent three. both bands are at that point were they'll continue to sell out shows regardless of their output, but they're riding on past successes. big difference is that the Chili's look like a bunch of old men on stage these days, whereas Green Day still seem quite youthful

i don't get why Linkin Park keep being brought up. i'd be very surprised if Reading/Leeds ever had them again unless they got incredibly desperate. haven't been relevant in ten years now, and will continue to just make sporadic headline appearances at Download every couple of years when the organisers can't think of anybody else

To me Green Day look more 'past it' than RHCP. Billie Joe reminds me of a cringey dad who's taking his kid to a gig for the first time... dust off the old leather trousers, slap on a bit of eye liner & hair dye & crack out the hand claps, no thank you.

Greendays new albums had a few decent songs but the majorty were poor. Both Green Day and RHCP are past it and I doubt that either will headline again. I think RHCPs will go to V next time they do festivals they dont seem to care about bad live reputations
