A slightly different take on your fave glasto proformances

Ok I didnt want another thread 'Your favourtie Glasto sets' etc, so I thought I'd ask what your favourite experiences at Glasto were EXCLUDING anything on the main stages (ie Pyramid, Other, Jazz/West Holts, Park, etc.) I'm looking for things you've just caught walking around. I'll start;

Mines probably last year (2010) on the thursday, my 5 mates had headed back to the tent after a short time in the stone circle but me and another friend decided to grab some beer and wonder around. We ended up walking through greenfields and saw a cafe with about 15 dancing and wooping people so decided to take a look, turns out what seemed likea 6/7 piece band were playing. Lead singer with an accordian, violins, trumpets etc. We spent a good40 mins there just watching them and was probably my moment of the weekend tbh, I love finding those little surprises!

The non mainstage performers that I always hunt down are Biggles Wartime Band. First fell across them just doing a Bandstand busk a few years ago and laughed myself silly whilst at the same time being very impressed by their musicianship and fun arrangements. They now seem to be established as Glasto stalwarts though I've never seen them gigging around the country.

When the lineup is announced and we start planning who we're going to see they always come fairly high up the list.

On the Friday me and my mate were debating all day over wether or not we should go and see either The Flaming Lips or Gorillaz. I eventually convinced my mate that it would be a great idea to go and see The Flaming Lips and we did so. Anyway we wern't really seeing any bands before The Flips were on so we sort of wandered to the other stage to see who was on there and if they were any good. The band that was on at the time was Hot Chip and we sort of rested for a bit and we decided that if it was a good band then we would find a spot in the crowd and watch them. I thought Hot Chip were nothing special at the time but when I actually saw them they blew me away and the atmosphere for that gig was immense. Anyway whilst waiting for The Flaming Lips to come on someone told me that Radiohead did the secret slot and I was a bit dissapointed I missed out on that but all the same I couldn't really complain as Hot Chip provided the starting point for what would turn out to be an unforgetable evening.

Arthur Lee in the Acoustic Tent (Before they changed it!) on the late Friday evening in 2004. Amazing. You Set the Scene was absolutely spine tingling.

Television playing Marquee Moon the same year in the New (Peel) Tent.

Three random DJs dressed as farmers, that’s not there name there were just three of them, on the Wednesday night one year in the Gin Palace (not sure if its still there?!), playing filthy ska and shouting “C’mon yis c**ts” at the crowd.

Emiliana Torrini in 2009 on the Friday afternoon up in the Park, just as the mud started to harden up (fnarr fnarr). Loads of people wandered in dressed up and on stilts and starting dancing about. A defo Glasto moment.

Another one that springs to mind is a random band called Wevie Stonder who i saw in 2004 in (i think) the solar powered cinema tent. Absolutely bonkers, at one point the lead singer appeared to be wearing a paddling pool. Wathching them was like an acid trip.

I had a similar experience to you on the wednessday, I dragged my mate up to the stone circle, when we got people was sitting, nice atmosphere and that, but and I think having caught em on the stage just past west holts opposite childrens world cafe(Which was i was so pleased to find, egg and chips GETTTT INNN) it was Orkestra Del Sol. Anyway it was just brilliant, proper mad people dancing around them as they played, as an awesome moment for my first evening at Glasto.

Just seen someone else mention them as the thursday, the days merge easily, but it was amazing it was either one of those days. Actually probs was the thursday as I think we had gone up more the park hill on the wednessday.

Queens Head Stage Thursday. Being in the middle of the mosh pit with my friends as Undercover Martyn came on by TDCC. Was amazing, it signalled an AMAZING weekend ahead.

mine was when j flipping z was playing me and the wife headed up near the stone circle and watched these two guy on a bike one was peddling to make power for the speackers whilst the other play guitar and sang real entertainment

One of my memorable moments this year was stumbling into a little dance floor early saturday am and seeing Dog Faced Geisha's. Truly bonkers! Not necessarily a favourite but definitely one that sticks in my mind.

Village Disco is great, saw them last year at Glasto and we had a good old boogie with the entertainers in their old skool Butlins outfits

This year's highlight was catching Mik Artistik's Ego Trip on the outdoor circus stage, I'd never heard of them before but I'm a big fan now Bought their CD straight after the performance and managed to catch them again at Shambala, where I was able to sing along to some of the songs

Mine has to be The Avett Brothers at The Avalon stage this year. A mate of mine recommended them to me & I took 2 friends along. The highlight of their set was when they played "Murder in the City":

Mine is probably the newton Faulkner set in the guardian lounge in 2008. It was the day before he was to play the other stage and it was the first time i had seen him. The tent was packed and I was stood quite near the front on the left hand side. The atmosphere was amazing. Especially as everyone was singing along. It had.a really good feel good feeling throughout the tent. However, I saw him this year at v festival and the set hadn't changed, which was a bit off putting but it didn't spoil my memory!

I actually left 'radiohead' (although I thought it was just Thom at the time) for Hot Chip and they were so much fun I really struggle to regret it, even though I feel like I should.

Had a right good dance, most fun band of the weekend, also singing 'your my number one guy' with my arm round my best mate was quite a nice moment. Flaming Lips then went on to reduce us to blubbering (but ecstatically happy) wrecks with Do You Realize??, a song which had an odd affect on said mate where he couldn't stop kissing me (on the cheek ) for about 10 minutes.

It would only ever happen at Glasto

A few things spring to mind for me:

- Seeing the Futureheads play a 'secret' set on the Blazing Saddles Stage in 2009. They're a band I absolutely love, so it was great to see them up close at my favourite festival.

- Hobo Jones and the Junkyard Dogs on the Avalon Stage this year. They were the first band I saw on the Friday and just loads of fun. Their 'American Idiot' cover was a hilarious way to start the festival.

- The Mandibles on the bandstand in 2008. I'm not sure exactly how to describe them, but the sun was shining, people were dancing, and they were a riot of colour and fun on the stage. Awesome. I've even got a bad photo of them: I don't know if they're regulars, but would love to see them again.

- Corinne Bailey Rae in the Croissant Neuf tent while the England game was on this year. Beautiful set, great atmosphere, and I felt totally vindicated at my decision to miss the football.

I was at the first 10 minutes of LCD Soundsystem this year but got bored pretty quickly, I think I was just fatigued with a lack of atmosphere down on the Other Stage that day and so thought "f**k it, I'm going to Julian Casablancas" and despite a disappointing number of Strokes songs, he absolutely killed it and was one of my highlights of the weekend.

The last song I caught of Empire of the Sun on the Park was pretty special too, shame they had to clash with Stevie.
