I'd say the least "rock" of the headliners could arguably be The 1975, and I'd still think of them as rock to a point. (Very eighties-indebted arena pop-rock.)

Agreed. I don’t know them very well but even from the 30 minutes I’ve seen of them live they came across as much less Rock than Rodrigo

You could definitely do ninety minutes of rock-orientated stuff from The 1975 and cut a few of their poppy moments out.

 

But then you'd lose some tunes that would likely be massive on that stage. The Sound should be an absolute floorfiller.

Folk on this thread and others are talking up the handful of decent songs The 1975 have and there's also a case to be made that they will play to more pre recorded synths and drums etc than O Rod will.

 

In contrast pretty much everything Rod will play will be a massive recognisable tune with each played pretty much live by an incredible band.

There's a chunk of sampler action in The 1975's set, absolutely, but there's plenty of organic sound too. You don't wander around as an eight-piece without that, unless you purely a vocal group, perhaps.

I’m not having a go at him but most people under 40 would struggle to name 1 or 2 of his songs. If more songs are recognisable it’s as he does covers.

Fair feedback, I have seen a few of The 1975 live band players interviewed on the Stage Left podcast but I don't like the band enough to want to listen. Maybe should and it would be an insight into who does what and how much is live. Last year I was amused by the whingeing about the constantly dancing Dua Lipa partially miming, as the Coldplay drummer then mimed his way through entire songs..guitarist might as well have also been miming for how deadly dull his parts were..

Think a lot of the big pop-rock bands have a chunk of pre-rec in there these days. I mean, to say Coldplay don't play with any would be preposterous, given how there is only four of them and so much is layered up in it.

 

I don't think I've caught that episode, but it is interesting. So many bands proclaim that pre-rec is the devil, and to be honest, a full pre-rec show - particularly with vocal miming - does grate on me.

 

But if you can do it for fits and starts - a song to amplify here, a multi-harmonic track there - I don't mind it. Plenty comes in the context of the show and how liberally it is used.

 

The 1975, on multiple times, are pretty live. Think they've fleshed out their sound more the further into their career.

With a few notable exceptions, the majority of Rods biggest songs were interpretations of other artist's work.  He's a singer before he's a songwriter.

Just broached in another thread that I think there's a case to be a Pyramid Headliner there, but it's a bit like Elton John. Wouldn't have had the latter as a headliner until the farewell tour suggested he was still a mahoosive draw.

 

But I'd wager it is Legends Slot for the Robster.

Agreed. Best line up for a few years so far, so many acts I've not seen before too. I won't be at the pyramid much but other stages are looking superb 😎

I haven't quite figured out who I'd be keen to discover if I was there, as such. Always a case that until the lineups are set by stage, it is a bit of a guessing game, and I don't always start listening in depth to those I don't really know.
