Yeah - the Shangers one will likely have to be re-thought.  WH not so much I wouldn't have said.

Shangri_La is really easy to close off, though. They do it already at various points in the wee small hours.

Also, WH can be closed without too much trouble. It's been done before for, erm, Rolf.

Yeah - I reckon WH stays as is.  Folk who want to be near the front will just need to get there early.

Trouble with closing SL off is the whole one way system and the impact on the entire SEC.  If you've got an enormo-crowd making a beeline for SL for something like this then the whole area will be fooked.  Unless they can figure out a way to specifically funnel queues for SL and free up the rest of SEC.

I reckon they'll have to change the booking now.

EDIT: should clarify that I think the difference between this and previous SL closures is not the volume of people in there at a given time but the volume making their way there specifically for this.

I was thinking this yesterday, I know there's probably some sort of distinction between a song lyric and something said on stage, but taken literally at face value, 'Smack my bitch up' is a disgusting statement that could be seen to encourage violence against women, which is a major problem in society and only takes one bad egg at a concert to take it literally. But we all understand it's not to be taken at face value, and noone interprets it that way.

I get what you're saying, but they now don't say it - it's 'Change my pitch up'.

I do think, logistically, it'll be a tricky one to get right.  It doesn't vibe as manageable.

Don't think so. The numbers into the SEC are already crowd controlled and then the entrance to SL is the same. Also, plenty will have ticked them off earlier at WH.

Assuming they don't get pulled from the lineup, the next question is whether the BBC should stream/broadcast their set.

Personally I'd be very happy if they didn't.

The Beeb didn't censor Lankum last year, so I doubt they'll censor this.  They wouldn't have broadcast it live on terrestrial anyway even before this, and I'm sure the footage will be reviewed or delayed before it goes up on iPlayer, which I guess is usually the case.

Yes we wouldn’t want the centrists dads of  x location  accidentally stumbling upon their gig and feeling all uncomfortable.

The crowd certainly might though.

If you really think the prodigy crowd would get offended at the phrase "smack my bitch up" then I don't know what to say. Besides, using "the crowd might get offended" to discuss whether a band should be cancelled from the lineup quickly becomes a very slippery slope

Anyway, my concern is more that the band would be playing up to the cameras for shock value, and that the BBC would risk platforming terrorist sympathisers.

Nah - I'd be really surprised - in fact, that's a pretty dim view of Glastonbury attendees.  The only chanting that would likely happen would be 'Free Palestine'.  There are folk who'd claim that in itself is antisemitic or supports terrorists, but there's less of it these days like the penny's dropped on how ridiculous they sound.

No I said the Kneecap crowd might chant Up Hamas....strictly off the back of all this media stuff.

They also might not.

It’s probably fair to question their use of shock value, but calling them “terrorist sympathisers” oversimplifies what they’re doing. They're political artists using provocation to challenge the dominant narratives, especially around colonialism, resistance, and state violence. If we only platform voices that never challenge the status quo, we’re not getting journalism - we’re getting PR.

Since they aren’t terrorist sympathisers I think the BBC and the good folk of Finchley will be fine.

Even if we overlook their past comments about Hamas and Hezbollah, some would say that wearing IRA style balaclavas is sympathising with and glorifying the IRA.

If Kneecap play (and they should) then it should go out on iplayer with the rest of the lineup. I'd expect them to stick to highlighting the Gaza death and destruction on the main stage. Any Hamas / Kill an MP stuff would come out in SL or a secret set.

As has been said before, one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter.

Or - far more likely - not at all.

The current series of Andor is - perhaps surprisingly for those that haven't seen it at all - spookily relevant to this entire issue.

Previous series too tbf.

Didn't think I'd get a tv show recommendation out of this thread, but I'll happily take it! 😂

Thanks!

    • Chill. There is no chance Sziget will be cancelled by the government. Even the prime minister held a press conference today, where he confirmed this.   Magyar said they do not want to shut down the country or prevent events from taking place. He gave the example that vetoing an event would be like completely cutting off a large consumer’s electricity supply for the organizers. However, just as they have not taken such a measure against large consumers, they have not taken steps to cancel events either. (Magyar did not name a specific event, but he was presumably referring specifically to the Sziget Festival.) At the same time, Péter Magyar stressed that if disruptions occur in the system or the heatwave persists, it could become necessary to postpone or reschedule events (example: some Hungarian football games will probably be held in daylight, moved to a few hours earlier, to save energy), although he believes there is currently little chance of that happening. This is particularly true for events that rely entirely, or largely, on their own energy sources.
    • If the campervan field residents aren’t allowed to cut through orchid they’ve got a brutal walk on their hands.   otherwise not too many surprises
    • This. I always read in awe the hatred toward the festival and Gerendai.  I see no chance of it being cancelled, except if something worse happens, like the whole electric grid collapses or something. But that’s not really a case. Worst case scenario is that the whole thing will be ran by diesel generators for the sake of the environment.
    • they are shutting down the nuclear power plant until Friday ; sziget starts 3 days later plus, they said they will have to import energy.    So I see no point in cancelling an event that will make them lose money
