It did happen, in the crowds at the top of the Pyramid field.  You're entitled to your point of view, but why claim I didn't see something just because you weren't aware of it?

It's not so much "flares" but the twats that usually hold them that worries me. red hot sparks and dis-guarded shells are a menace, especially in a tight crowd and especially if your wearing plastic shower mac's.

 

They're illegal and can hurt other people so I've got no issue with them being banned, plus if the popo catch you it's up to 3 months inside and given the current hysteria about ISIS I expect some examples will be made.

 

And before anyone chips in "drugs are illegal" - yes they are but if you possess some for personal consumption the only thing you're going to endanger is yourself..

Chinese lanterns are rightly banned because there have been many confirmed reports of them injuring wildlife.

They do add to the atmosphere and colour, and look great, but yes I'm glad they're banned too. Only a matter of time before someone is seriously maimed at a festival, if it hasn't already happened.

People have been saying that for the last 10 years. Out of all the millions of flares set off at festivals, there have been fewer incidents than you can count on one hand.

I don't use them myself but I do like them at Glastonbury. I remember thinking they looked awesome for Kasabian in 2014.

I'm almost sure they will still make an appearance this year despite being banned, too.

Just to add, they aren't red hot sparks you see coming out.  It is a foamy substance that is not burning when ejected, they just look like red hot sparks because they are lit by the actual flare.  Anyone who has been stood close to a flare will know this, you come away looking like it's been snowing, not covered in pinhole burns.

However if flares are going off everywhere then some questions will be asked of the security teams. If multiple banned items have gotten in, then what else has?

Flare going off just behind me during Chemical Brothers in 2015 is still one of the best moments of my life. For a brief moment I thought I had been chosen and had made it to another dimension. Drugs and flares people, drugs and flares.

Russy just google injuries caused through flares and there are loads of articles. They are not harmless. Glastonbury is a liberal place and most things are tolerated. 

The people letting off flares do not ask the peoples permission around them if they mind being subjected to them. That is a selfish attitude to have. Now just because you like them, other people including myself do not. I want to see the band, not a shitload of red or multi coloured smoke. 

If there are a group of people who are happy to let off flares and be around them, so be it. Just don't do them near me.

To me they offer nothing. How many of legendary gigs are spoken about because of the flares that the crowd were letting off?

They clamped down a bit at Other Stage last year, partly due to the new barrier half way. Saw some lads get led out at the start of New Order last year

They're never gonna catch people on Pyramid during a headliner though, far too busy/big

I don't have a problem with them personally, but can see why in this day and age they have been banned, I don't think anybody can say it's a suprise can they, with all the health sand safety rules we have now?

I remember at the back of Florence they were going off left right and centre and pairs of stewards where charging about putting them out almost straight away anyway.

Yep, same thing happened to me during arcade fire. My brain was in another dimension then a demonic red flare went off right next to me, a huge skull appeared on the screen on stage and those (completely harmless) little balls cascaded down on me, like I was being showered in the fiery rain of hell or something. A wondrous moment.

seems like most of the incidents are of people throwing them at football matches, which is completely understandable considering how those crowds behave. Even alcohol is banned at football  

No one at glastonbury is throwing the flares.
