Flares

Flares at Glastonbury? Whats your thoughts?

I always think they look amazing! I have some brilliant videos from the Chemical Brothers a few years back and the flares in the video make it look so surreal.

However how dangerous are they?

As from the 3rd of April 2017 The possession and use of flares and pyrotechnics at music festivals became illegal in England and Wales.

A ban on any “pyrotechnic articles” means that those caught with one could face three months in prison.

The new law brings festivals into line with football stadiums, after a similar ban was introduced last year for sporting events.

I have never or would never take flares myself but just wanted to know others views.

Also if you have any crowd photos with flares why dont you share them here.

They might look nice but scary if you have one dropped right next to you.

I had one dropped inches from my head when Kasabian played 2014 by someone sat on the shoulder of the guy next to me. Not really needed, thats what light shows and organised pyro are for

As always it is deeply saddening to see the further sanitisation of the festival getting such eager and earnest support from glastonbury goers.

What hypothetical danger can we ban next I wonder?

Hopefully as in previous years some brave souls will flop out their heroic cocks and piss all over this pathetic rule, and raise their flares aloft: a beautiful fiery middle finger to the authorities.

If by 'current climate' you mean following the recent attacks, then the terrorists have won.

It's not that, but the biggest risk at Glasto IMO is given the 'current climate' people get spooked and there's some sort of crush.

I'm sure people have seen a flare before.

I'm talking about a climate where firework-related false alarms have caused fairly serious accidents.  People are understandably nervy.

Cancelling the festival would be letting the terrorists "win", keeping the people at the festival safe is a different issue.

Regardless of whether they are cool or not, you'll get chucked out if they catch you with one.

I've just downloaded the EEGlasto  app and noticed it on one of the pages (Info > Packing list > what not to bring).

No you wont get chucked out, you'll get it confiscated.

    • Wednesday is a nice addition imo
    • Kronenberg in a tent as well IIRC but Brooklyn Pilsner was easier to get without queueing and was everywhere across the festival.
    • I think they'll end up doing something due to pressure and bad PR. Maybe they do a discount code for next year or bar credit or something along those lines.    I agree though. I acknowledge that the lineup is huge but surely you can't cancel 33% of the headliners and not reimburse in some way. Their insurance will probably cover their fees for MA, Doja, Bad Gyal and Mac DeMarco due to force majeure.
    • Looks like nothing for weekend ticket holders. You'd expect a goodwill gesture.
    • Enough has been covered about how much of a sh*t show that was, so I'll just say, Massive Attack and it's relationship with this festival (and potentially me) are f**king cursed.    They were announced in 2020 when I first got excited about seeing them. They were subsequently on the poster for 21, 22 and now 26. This time I was in actually in the crowd close to the stage waiting for them twice haha. I give up!
