with embargo'd info to somewhere like a newsdesk - or even eFestivals - it only gets sent out a short time before the embargo time .... not weeks before. A few days, perhaps.

Who gets it when (how early) can depend on a number of different things, but from the festival's point of view it's always sent as last-minute as they think works.

That 'send as late as possible' thing is done for practical purposes, because things might always change during an embargo, and the longer the embargo'd news the more chance of something having changed.

They'd also avoid sending two for announcement at different times. There's just too much chance for cock-up.

I'm 100% certain it was cock-up, even if the names get announced down the line.

Weirdly enough I just edited my post to say exactly the same thing. :)

Saturday. Lady gaga - foo fighters

Sunday. Green day - Ed Sheeran

Whatever your musical taste that is an incredibly strong set of sub's and headliners and would be the envy of festival bookers worldwide

GD subbing instead of topping Other would be better and as yet we don't really have an idea to go under him.

Big Green Day fan here, from what I've seen it the green day forums they are expecting it to be announced with the main announcement and think the BBC let it out accidentally and then a few funny posts about glasto being over rated and not a good festival because its sold out already and you can't even get day tickets... where do these people appear from.

I'm 50/50 about it potentially happening, personally I think it'd be incredible it would be a great way to split the crowd from Ed, although Other Stage headliner might be a strange one I'd have thought they would headline Pyramid (come on they are on another level to Mumford and sons)

I can't see them Subbing Ed, their usual set is 2 1/2 - 3 hours long, they would want the longer set of headlining Other Stage

Overall would be a great booking to get a band that has and is headlining festivals worldwide to headline the Other stage would be a massive coup and would blow every other festival out of the water

FeI'd be amazed if this is the case for every bit of content on BBC News mate. Particularly late on a Friday night, people may spot-check but there's no way 3 people look over that article in-depth before it goes live, particularly as it was a hurried piece following the announcement rather than a document which would have needed legal approval or anything like that.

My day job is to update a very prominent website within a team of 8 for what it's worth (though admittedly nowhere near BBC size).

do you think that was the first they knew about the foos though? I would imagine they would've caught some of the info earlier and have it prepped.

ill be honest, I know nothing about journalism. But the way I see it is there'd be a writer, an editor and publisher at least before something goes live? I could be well and truly wrong though. As you say, circumstances considered that could be OTT

Well I think Emily and or her Dad have been quoted saying that as it's the one before the fallow year, they are going big and cramming two years worth in, so it would certainly fit in with that.

I'm not ruling out the possibility that the green day is correct. After all, the rumour started somewhere, and it might have started from a good place.

But I do think the beebs mention of their name is driven by that rumour and not by any special-secret info they might have had from Glastonbury.

How much an article might be checked would be down to that media outlet, and I'm not going to try and guess the beebs exact set-up.

But I doubt any checkers would be doing a check of the basic stated facts. They'd be more likely checking for typos, or readability, or libel, those sorts of things. The journo would have been expected to have got the basics right.

Pyramid sub and Other headliner is the same length most times I believe. They do play that long but if they are about, want it and have been told this is all that's on offer then who knows. They have already gone from barely hitting festivals for years and playing their own outdoor shows to a Reading show and just one stadium date, and now a BST show. It's going to be on tv coverage. But if they pull of RH, FF, Ed, GD, Gaga, Gibb, Beach Boys and if DiRo comes off then that won't ever be beaten by themselves or any other again.

They may also be pushing it as, as much as they want to continue putting on events there, things might change with owners etc between now and 2019/20.

Ed's not much of a shock, that's as good as common knowledge now. But the green day thing was unexpected.

With Foos playing and Green Day potentially playing I think Eavii have organised a better reading festival than reading festival actually has

Michael could take a shit in the stage and do nothing else and the festival would still be better than reading

What exactly did the BBC press guy say that you met last night? Was it literally nothing more than shrug of the shoulders and 'reckless'?

it's an interesting one, because it is a genuine mistake but I do want to believe it's true. The journo will be getting pulled in to a meeting on Monday though I'm sure. BBC don't really have a record of reporting rumours and clickbait so it's something unusual

They'd almost certainly have had an article prepped earlier that day that's correct, and certainly in my job whenever something like that occurs, it is written by someone, checked and put into web format by another and then put live by another. However, on a news team, where hundreds of articles are going up every day on all sorts of topics, I'd imagine in many smaller areas with lesser articles (such as this) those roles would be merged into just 1 or 2 people, particularly at that time of day.

Or it's not happening and they just copied the info from here (or from somewhere else reporting info originally from here) - an unofficial source as they say.

Why would they announce info copied from here though? I just think it makes more sense that they know its happening but were unaware the festival has yet to announce it and are now backtracking.

If you search 'Glastonbury 2017 lineup' the second result is the efests lineup and rumours page. I've seen it before that people haven't realised what the letters in the left had column signified. Or perhaps it was written by a fan of the festival who didn't know as much as they thought they did.

A cock up has been made for sure, but we can't jump to conclusions what that cock up was - the release of embargoed information or a poorly researched article.

all the TV coverage fine detail stuff (bands) is done after the announcements, as far as i'm aware. And anyway, there's a huge separation between TV production and the news department who would have done that article.

Very true. As someone who works on website editorial for a big broadcasting company I can guarantee you that the person who wrote that article will have absolutely zero idea of anything the TV production arm is up to or is privvy to.

I 100% agree that this is an editorial error and not based on any sources information the writer of said article had.

Also, a media organisation like the BBC with its size and influence will almost always add an editorial note when an article has been corrected and it has already been cited elsewhere. They have to have absolute transparency on things like this and not just edit and pretend it never happened.

not the BBC press guy, Glasto's press guy. And yep, it was exactly as I said.

He didn't care, so it clearly wasn't anything that had come from him. He's very used to media doing bad or wrong reporting of Glasto.

It doesn't really work like that though surely? If they are going to be at Glasto, they'd have been approached a long time back. Can't see it myself but would love to be wrong, if only for my teenage son about to attend his first Glasto. I daren't tell him they're rumoured...

I don't think it matters that it's there for them to be honest and I'm not wanting to keep it alive, I'd feel the need to see them but won't as I'm watching Ed regardless and I have half a mind to get a BST ticket due to Rancid being support so I'm more in favor of this not happening, unless it means that Rancid come with them and play lower down on Other for example. I feel the best place for them though would be Leftfield for some reason bu their rarity should put them higher.

Also, they are just as mainstream as Foo's when it comes to the radio so I'm sticking with if Foo's headline....which of course there would never be a debate then so do GD.

    • There's always one, monday!
    • We had one f**kwit one year come back at 4am and start playing music out loud and sitting under the tree talking. Thankfully his mate was in the tent trying to sleep too and came out and told him to f**k off. After one big argument he did indeed f**k off.   Otherwise I can actually sleep at GM without ear plugs compared to glasto. It's usually typically fine for sleeping at.

    • Yeah, she sold out BST twice and I think she'll return with even more interest.
    • To me MGK doesn't shift tickets, but could appeal to a younger demographic.    Don Broco/Architects/Jimmy Eat World/Turnstile - one or two of these would hit better.
