Yeah, the right won. NATO is fucked, hope everyone is ready for real, pre WW1 instability

As soon as trump learns that nato is vital for american power the status quo will be maintained. EVERYTHING he said in the run up to the election should now be disregarded.

yes, hillary clinton isnt president.

Sending podesta out to tell her supporters to go home, then conceding in a dark corner? says it all about her character.

Yes trump is a bully and all the rest and it's awful that he's now the most powerful man in the world, but it is a positive thing that the bush/clinton dynasty has been destroyed.

Talk of WW3 is absurd.

Yep people really going OTT about this. Hes not as bad as his campaign suggests.

Hilary not speaking a poor move.

Obamas legacy is fucked now too. Crazy times.

it's much more like WW2, with the rise of nationalism and country's being out only for themselves, and the Mail going the full fascist.

The only real similarity to WW1 is the strange death of liberal England - amusingly enough for not dissimilar reasons.

would that be like how the tories would tear themselves apart over the brexit campaign, and how they'd tear themselves apart no matter what the result, and how they'll tear themselves apart over a50....? ;)

Can't you let me have this one crumb of hope/fantasy ?!?! ;)

Not sure about that. The Mexican peso hasn't crashed for no reason.

I'm not on about 'the wall' - tho that might happen, basically as a job creation scheme - but the north american free trade agreement.

Trump won't be as nutty as his campaign, but some of it is going to come true.

On holiday eight years ago I met a group of people from Oregon who were delighted at Obama's win. They explained: "Thank goodness we can now travel and meet people without having to pretend we're from Canada."

Stand by to start meeting a lot more 'Canadians'.

the likes of brexit and Trump keep on winning because 'the left' won't face up to its faults. So no, not really. :P

'The left' only wants to scream about how the other side is nasty, and aren't able to present their own coherent  - and acceptable - vision. Until that changes we're only going to get more of the same.

Someone mentioned France above, and while I think things might change there, Hollande is one of the few that did face up to failure, so i'm hopeful that might not go the full nutter.

Yes I'm sure there will be a half-arsed fence put up, but I cant see many of the major scare stories coming true. He just said whatever it took to win the election.

While it's embarrassing for america, it's still another victory for democracy.

I felt much more despondent after the brexit vote.

Time will tell anyway.

Theres going to be no wall built, no mass deportations, no bombings, no banning of Muslims, no locking up Hillary and no getting rid of NAFTA. Although he may try to negotiate that.

We basically haven't a clue what hes going to do. But hes basically saved the Republican Party. Which is mental. Lefties and democrats as guilty as anyone for this. Romney and McCain were attacked like they were Hitler when the reality was they were fairly moderate Republicans.

The tories are tearing themselves apart over a50, but labour's mess means they have the time to regroup.

But Hollande has the worst ratings of any French president in history!

In fact he is a good example of the problem with your strategy, get it wrong and you alienate your left wing supporters and fail to win over the right or centre leaving you with a wipe out.

I agree the left needs to sort its stuff out, but that's going to be difficult as they're being pulled in different conflicting directions  by their old core voting coalitions.

For all the criticism of his campaign, the campaign he ran was the only campaign that could possibly win for him.  I agree he wont do anything he promises and if (as I suspect) he is only planning to serve one term, he wont have to answer for these broken promises.

There is absolutely no basis for u to say that. The GOP are in full control of all the major govt institutions. The far right has won in America.

but they're not.

Just like 'the left', they don't have a plan either, but they're not screaming that no one has a plan or that any suggested plan is the wrong plan, and so revealing their own inadequacies.

They might have disagreements about what they'd like out of brexit, but they're pragmatic enough to accept the UK voted out and the deal they might want isn't in just-their control - and so will go along with what it brings.

To be fair its a little simplistic to assume all people involved are far right. Theres a lot of moderate Republicans who will be in high positions. Just as theres a lot of very right leaning Democrats. Particularly in the south.

I dont understand why the GOP being in full control contradicts what I said, which part dont you agree with?

1. They way he ran his campaign was the only way Donald Trump could win the presidency

2. He wont deliver the promises he made during the campaign

3. He will only serve one term

Also you could argue how conservative Trump really is. He certainly isnt seen by many republicans as being very conservative and has supported both parties in the past.

Yep. I wasn't suggesting he's popular, just that he faced up to (some of) his mistakes and created a different narrative by doing so.  It's not handed the narrative to the nutters (not to the same extent, anyway) as happened here and in the USA.

well 2. and possibly 3. We have to assume he will do what he promised. Its what the GOP wants to do as well!

    • It does feel like there's a push back against net zero from both left and right, but especially the right. Probably since Trump I guess, but even before Trump you had the tea party and Sarah Palin thing, but over here the right were on board with the issue of climate change and the need to address it, from Thatcher through to Johnson. That has now changed, first it was the populist right, not it is mainstream, with Badenoch making the two prerequisites for standing for the Tories being against net zero, and for leaving the ECHR. You can be an ex neo-nazi as long as you are against net zero. At least many now seem to accept the climate change is happening and it is caused by us, but they now say well it will be a nice mediterranean climate so lets bin net zero anyway and just have fun f**k all that woke green sh*t. But also the left, with various trade union leaders and blue labour types going on about net zero being bad for the economy and the need for reindustrialisation as we head back to the glory days of the 50s when we all worked down pit or something, ignoring the amount of industries and jobs created by net zero. The greens obviously are still firmly behind the net zero thing, but the party is also full of nimbys who are worried about hedgerows and hedgehogs and votes, and even the leadership have realised that there isn't votes in climate doomerism but there definitely is in bashing billionaires and Israel. I guess the main driver of net zero policies in the country is still Miliband which is probably why everyone seems to be f**king terrified of him, the mad freak and his renewables. He is out of the energy department, but his replacement is hardly a petrolhead, and he isn't in the treasury doing terrifying things like spending money, but he is in the foreign office which is maybe a good place for him because climate change is a global issue and its going to take a global effort.
