reckon they're about Park headliner size now but that their new album will do very well so will probably push them higher than that

The National are a weird one. haven't got broad enough appeal to sub, and tbh even third down seems off for them. i struggle to think where they'd fit these days which would be deemed a big enough slot yet not have an awful crowd

don't see them as Other headliners myself. not because they aren't the right size, because they are, but because of the more electronic direction it's headliners have taken in the past couple of years. not that that couldn't be broken for the right act

I could see them sub the Other, it the same way Peej was able to sub LCD.

Grandaddy wouldn't headline would they? I would've thought Mercury Rev are bigger, and they didn't. Either way, there must be a very good chance of them playing next year if they've got an album to tour.

I have a dream of The National subbing Radiohead on the Pyramid on Friday night. If Tame Impala can sub Adele then there's no doubt in my mind that The National can sub Radiohead.

Tricky one that, Dental. I think MR had that one big album of theirs. In amongst stuff that's more interesting than amazing.

But then Grandaddy made a real (w*nky term) progression with each album. Never bought into the OK Computer / Sophtware Slump bollocks...despite the subject matter.

Both the above in terms of the view of a casual listener.

So either could do it for me. So fuck it, why not Grandaddy. Great band. And some great solo stuff from Lytle in recent years...if not a single cohesive lp.

God, I adore Matterhorn though.

Apparently Mercury Rev was pretty quiet.

FWIW, Grandaddy sold out their Edinburgh show in a matter of hours, whereas the Rev didn't, in a much smaller venue.

Yeah I much prefer them too. I would prefer a non-headline slot though, considering the longest Park headline slot is only 75 minutes and for 15 minutes less we can see it without a nasty headline clash.

I can imagine; their set finished as all the headliners were starting or had just started, and that Bowie thing wasn't for another hour and a half.

Mercury Rev headlined Green Man two years ago and Grandaddy are doing the second stage, but that Edinburgh comparison probably is more telling. I guess Grandaddy went away and Mercury Rev stuck around gettin' old and stuff.

Spiritualized another one from that era that didn't headline Park and I'd be confident they're bigger than Grandaddy. Maybe that's what Saturday Park sub is now; turn of the century space rock slot. Maybe that's where we pencil in Lytle and the lads.

Early albums are pretty lo-fi.

Get shinier and more melodic as you progress through each one, culminating in The Fambly Cat.

All have that almost metronomic drumming, chugging guitar and lo-fi synthy stuff.

I adore Lytle's lyrics. 

And every album has a few fragile melancholic numbers sung in Jason's brittle falsetto.

Live I've seen them include Pavement and Elliott Smith covers...which kinda gives you a good gauge of what they're like.

Grandaddy are a much bigger draw than Mercury Rev, i reckon.

 

people only go to see MR in the hope they'll play deserters songs. Grandaddy have a much fuller/richer back catalogue to draw on. 

Grandaddy headlined eotr a couple of years back. No way i could see MR doing that

I do love asking a stupid question...

So I've been trying to figure this out for 7 years, and failing miserably.  What makes a band or artist a good choice for the Park?  I've seen stuff up there that would fit on West Holts (Mavis Staples), Other (St Etienne), Pyramid (Biffy) and everything in between.

A good 90% of the acts either playing or listed I've never heard of, so I'm guessing there is more than a small element of niche/indie about it, plus a healthy dollop of whatever Emily happens to be listening to at the time, but beyond that I've got nothing.

Anyone?

EDIT: goes without saying that I am thoroughly enjoying trawling the web to listen to the bands I've never heard of, and finding some good stuff along the way

A few years back you could have plausibly made the case that it specialised in a particular sort of bearded Brooklyn hipster music a la Pitchfork, but even then there were always more exceptions to the rule than not. 

Now it's a real grab bag, albeit with the proviso that the acts are obviously only of a certain size and popularity - and that whoever's booking it has better taste than the equivalents at JPT or the Other Stage.

Apart from a handful on either side, John Peel and Park seem pretty interchangeable in terms of acts booked nowadays. Just one's a better venue.
