Muse

My main working theory is that it's all nonsense.

My much preferred working theory is that a deal was struck with Muse that stated they would headline if no other suitable act was available. If someone better came along they'd step aside (why they'd agree to this I'm not sure). This is why people think it's Muse as they're the headliner as it stands.

Surely no band would sign a contract that was essentially "you're booked for this slot but we're still going to search for better acts. If we find one, you're playing lower but if not, you'll do"

Muse headlining just doesn't seem to fit the policy of getting an album on the first album cycle.

It is a bit stale where as Radiohead seem to fit the criteria more.

I just can't imagine a Muse show in the light though

The mind boggles

yeah if Muse hadn't been so heavily rumoured i'd have written them off from the get go and would be expecting a Radiohead announcement for sure, but there must be a reason several tabloids have all linked Muse with the festival

Bear in mind that if one tabloid links Muse with the festival, all the others will follow suit without any attempt at checking the facts (and I say this as a ex-Fleet Street journalist)

usually i would agree, but two separate tabloids (who are both usually pretty good with this stuff) reported Muse and Coldplay as headliners, yet one listed Foo Fighters as the third headliner and the other listed Adele, so they're not just copying each other and obviously have their own sources

Sorry, but no. There are umpteen permutations to this conundrum, but applying Ockham's razor, the most logical explanation is one of the tabloids heard a suggestion of Muse and Coldplay, which the other tabloid repeated without knowing its veracity. And then Foo Fighters and Adele are educated guesses.

Sure, the tabs sometimes have sources and sometimes get it right, but if you look back over the last however many years, I bet you find just as many instances of them getting it wrong as right. Wasn't Wham! mooted last year or the year before?

hmm no. these things weren't reported as 'guesses' - these newspapers (the two i'm talking about in particular) have sources and have gotten this stuff right in the past (one was the first to break the news of The Who last year, for instance, whilst we were all under the impression they were still booked up for another show that night). and yeah, they sometimes get it wrong, but when several reputable sources are all claiming the same thing due to their own sources, you can;t just discount them because 'it might be a guess'

Glastonbury sort-of do that already ... tho in a less harsh way.

Acts get booked as sub, and told they might get bumped up to headline. Kasabian is a recent example who ended up headlining.

and that reason is that some bands were being told that Muse would probably be the Friday headliner.

I've had info about Muse come to me directly.

I can't guarantee what I was told is accurate, but everything else I've had from the same geezer has proven to be accurate.

yeah, booked as a sub makes sense. But they wouldn't get "booked" as a headliner and told that they may get pushed down as they search for another act.

Perhaps Muse are pragmatic enough to be thinking that due to their lack of brand new material at the moment subbing to a 'big' act isn't the worst idea in the world?

Keeps them relevant for people between album releases and it's a fairly easy booking for them due to their history of playing at the farm.

All just wild speculation of course.

Have you been close to going TBC any of the headliners Neil?

Nope.

But I don't think it's impossible Glasto might have a convo with band they're on good terms with, to say (for example) "Prince has just phoned up and asked to play, but we can only say yes if we can give him a headline slot. Is there anything you can suggest?"

There's ways it might get done that aren't saying to the 'pushed aside' band that the festival thinks they're a bit shit really.

Having said I don't think it's impossible, I don't really think that sort of thing is likely.

This is awful.

Only way is if they're a 4th headliner like Coldplay were supposed to be in 2009. If that were the case, however, I'd expect the one not playing last would be Adele due to the others' stage shows (this assumes Radiohead as the final headliner). Unless Muse were booked after the other three/asked to play when Glasto wanted the other three.

i thought that, but what dance act could even be considered big enough to justify bumping Muse down, unless that Jean Michel Jarre stuff was right and he demanded darkness/a closing set?

Mhmm maybe its a mixup, Muse headline (with that set length) and JMJ does something after?  Muse are big into stage production, so a chance to maybe with work with him/having him after with something spectacular could have been tempting?

Neil, if what you heard was true about Muse at least being pencilled in as a headliner at some point then surely this means they essentially stepped down as headliner willingly to make way for another? which seems rather strange

The only band I could see Muse subbing to is Led Zep, or at a push RATM

In all seriousness though, surely the only way Muse play and not be a pyramid headliner is Other Headliner, Friday Opener or they headline JP tent but make it very clear they are playing the Drones album and none of the greatest (s)hits.

No chance any of them imo. Okay maybe slight chance of Friday opener but it'd be a huge change from all the others acts they've had in that slot.

Only way I see is if they're a 4th headliner like Coldplay were supposedly gonna be in 2009.

so ... a little more on this "Muse won't be headlining" thing that I heard.

I said I knew nothing about the source, but now I do. And I've got to say that I think it's more unlikely than likely that this source has good info because of where he's placed in things, but that doesn't necessarily mean the info is bad. All sorts of people do end up with the accurate info, and the difficulty is sorting the good from the bad.

And yet ... it's such an oddity to suggest Muse won't be headlining but will be playing that there's something about it which makes me think perhaps there's something to it.

    • If you had to come through the fence after coming down the hill if you weren’t already down the hill then you were probably in general. From there the blocks of toilets, showers and water points aren't far at all and to your right is aldi. I know of the lake but apparently it fills up super quick and is noisy and loads of bugs....I got bitten as it was lol. But I joined a solo camp WhatsApp group so followed them.

    • They are going to have Blink 182 for sure, early June upto around Werchter weekend I'd say for them. Two of Sweden Rock,  Greenfield and RFP are going to miss out.
    • I've come across a few this weekend saying Deftones aren't big enough for Download.   I would recommend b&b hotel hbf the night before....cheap, comfortable and very decent. Within 10 minutes from the station and a tram stop outside to jump on...all travel is free during the festival time as well with a kombi. Lidl is very good and cheap I can't lie....€6 for a chair with carey handle, €20 with a bag too...you can work that out yourself.   If you camp, get up at 5am and go to the queue....literally don't question it as now I know.     The travel wise part is easy when you get the hang of it and I've never had an easier exit from a festival today tbh. We were camped in the turn left section but past the registration and to get water you have to come right out.   Opening up an exit through he camp at least by Friday morning when everyobe is there would be much better but you csnt walk through general if you're green and sonon.   I think the issue for me probably too is I have never taken like a mutliple litre water too, I've always done a 6 pack water from like poundland lol but you definitely need it. I had one shower that was cold lol   Talking of getting into the front, Volbeat was the only easy one, for Maiden and especially Linkin Park if you weren't in the queue for it by at least the last quarter ot Architects you had no hope....it was shocking. I do like orbit to sit down. I had to decide to sack off Within Temptation too or no chance.   Second stage biggest gripe is the faff of walking all the way round when VIP or whatever it is literally get access to each bit. I did read tbh before going people though RIP/Ring was turning too much the wrong way.   Also as a side note, caught some of Limp Bizkit last night too and they are not headliner but any distance at all. Yes they pull a crowd...they would do with LP finished but on the grand scale its a super weak booking. Stop, start for video recordings all the way through a headline set?, 1hr 15 minutes and you can't play for that time. I'm so glad they were not chosen to headline main.   On another thing, if RIP played it right they'll get GC and Avril to sub/second stage headline on the Blink day.   Toilets and cleanliness is a big plus I will say that.
