Kanye West

I didn't go to watch him, haven't seen it on tv but can safely say he was shite.

:)

Anyone else see Frank SiNazi in Cabaret? He used backing tapes, was offensive, devicive... sounds about the same except he was intentionally hilarious.

Out of the Pyramid headliners I've seen; Arcade Fire>Stones>Kanye>>>>>>>>Arctics, and considering that Arctics weren't really bad, I've not done too badly with a stage I claim to hate.

what was so bad about the Arctics? I wasn't there so can't comment myself - I'm just curious.

The crowd was what was bad about it, obviously everybody has different experiences, but we were in a horrible spot when we arrived, tried to move around when things got nasty when it started, encountered abuse when moving away. Stood in loads of different placed, people shouted at us, tried to steal our bags, shoved us for standing too close to them, worst crowd I've been in for anything, not just Glastonbury. I've never encountered anything even approaching it at the festival before or since.

The band themselves were OK, there was just no spark, they were trying to be uber cool. The big singalong moments were special, but were few and far between. The naff violins made Mardy Bum ridiculous, I thought Kanye and Justin Vernon was a big wasted opportunity, but Arctics and Guy Garvey way outdid them. But credit where it's due, there were some great moments of that set, 505, Cornerstone and R U Mine were all pretty great. Better than any Pyramid sub I've seen (but I've only ever seen three subs and they were all disappointingly shit).

Just watched it on the TV. Doesn't come across very well.

Pleased I went to Leftfield in the Sonic.

Definitely a good headliner though. Gets people talking.

Lee Nelson, erm... I have no problem with it. It was satire. He didnt crash Florence or The Who's set as they don't have a history of that. I just don't find it very funny.

I was there. I was near the front (Nearly under the crane at it's most extended).

I thought it was sensational. Loved it. Best thing I've ever seen at the Pyramid.

Few things:

1. If you say "He used autotune!" as a criticism then you've missed the point

2. If you like Simon Brodkin or think what he did was "satire" or "clever" then you're a tool. He does this at everything... X Factor, Man City, he's invaded more stages than I've had hot dinners... Anything to raise his profile, not to make a statement. Everything else he claims it is, is just him trying to justify his aggressive self promotion bollocks.

3. I cannot understand how anyone could say "Crap setlist". Crap setlist!? Look at it! It's a monster!

4. The crowd was insanely into it around me. Throughout. Everyone lost their shit when the crane moment happened.

Did he fluff a couple of bits? Sure. But I couldn't take my eyes off him. I've watched it back on TV and the sound isn't as good but I still enjoyed it in that form too.

Personally I think its quite simple. I love Kanye I'm a huge fan of all his albums you should imo 100% have been a headliner this year, he has every right to be their he was the right choice, the petition was a fucking joke and the dick that wrote it an angry little twat, the fact that EE received death threats only adds to showing the kind of horrible person who feels the need to sign a petition to campaign against anything remotely different appearing on the pyramid, if you signed that petition you don't belong at Glastonbury.

However, for a combination of reasons including technical issues, twat fake celebs running onto the stage, too many slow songs all next to each other, long periods of the crowd not having a fucking clue what was going on and weird versions of his biggest songs that weren't as good as the originals it just wasn't a great show by him, it was still a great show, it just could have been better.

That doesn't mean he shouldn't be there but just that it wasn't a 10/10 show, that's ok, I still liked it, he put more effort in that the Who, and it had some great moments, but it just wasn't that amazing. Which is a shame, but never mind I still had a fun night.

I never said I liked it, or claimed it was clever. So I'm a "tool"?

It was pretty shit, I don't see the point,

If you think it was satire, then yes. Because it isn't. Is it "satire" when he does it at X Factor? At Premier League football games? At the airport with the England team? He's doing it for attention where he knows there will be cameras. It's not clever, it's just because he's a prick who wants to expand his shitty BBC3 audience figures.

He's a bellend.. I agree with that, but to start abusing me for it shows you up for being a first class twat.

Alright, maybe we've both been too strong in our terminology here - You aren't a 'tool' for saying it was satire but you are wrong, IMO. Sorry if I came off as aggressive, I typed in anger and that was wrong. Didn't mean to abuse.

Also (entirely separate to the Brodkin thing) I find it pretty amusing that people would say "Oh Kanye, he's so full of himself! What a c*nt! I could never enjoy that!" but would happily bop along to an actual paedo playing a guitar the following day. Get a hold of yourselves.

Agree with this 100%

He's the first and only rapper to ever display any braggadocio in a genre that's renowned for humility and downplaying one's own achievements.

Also disgusting to see a Queen classic treated so shabbily, unlike Run The Jewels' subtle and reverential use of We are The Champions.

I'm not entirely sure, these things are subtle, but I think that might be irony.

I'm a huge fan of Kanye and have defended him time and time again but it was a complete and utter let down.

I've seen him before at the Big Chill and that was the same. There's just no spectacle anymore.

Remember when he played at the Brits? And brought on about 60 dancers for gold digger. It needed dancers, guests and live musicians. His ego has got so large that he thinks him, his God given talent and a spotlight can command a glastonbury headlining performance. You're not Otis Redding, that's not how hip hop works live.

I can see how in his head he's pictured this powerful and artistic performance where it's just him... That could work for a music video but not a 2 hour performance I'm afraid.

Completely upstaged by Pharrell.

Mate, I think it's you with unrealistic ideas of what Kanye can reasonably deliver and where he is now as an artist. We were never going to get that big show from years and years ago, this is what Kanye West is doing now, some of us love it. "That's not how hip-hop works live" is exactly why he's doing stuff like this, because he's sick of hip-hop being pigeonholed. I think that, on the whole, the show worked well, if nothing else it was a triumph of his uncompromising vision.

Fair play. Maybe the comedown has set in and Ive over reacted! I apologise.

I fully agree with your second point. I think Kanye is a bit of a dick, but so are a lot of performers. If being a dick stopped you headlining, then how many headliners could there ever be? I was going to go to Kanye out of curiosity until Leftfield (an act I have waited to see for ages) were announced.

I wasn't going to give Townshend my time for that reason. Others are free to disagree with me. Its their choice as mine, but I couldn't watch them.

I can see where you're coming from. It's powerful in the right environment. His performance of Bound on Jools Holland is one of the best things I've ever seen and is in line with his new direction, I just think for headlining glastonbury it's not engaging enough. I wanted a performance to reflect Twisted Fantasy. You can say I'm 5 years too late but he was the same at the Big Chill.

    • Tell me more. Last Latitude we went to was '21 - my son was young & had a wagon so we snuck good beers in that way. I remember there being some Brooklyn IPA on sale which was tolerable - are you saying they don't sell anything other than Carlsberg now?! 😳
    • Tonight was a disgrace. There wasn't *that* much rain, and it wasn’t *that* windy. A festival of this size should be able to withstand some adverse weather without it bringing the whole circus to a standstill. And if it is true that part of a speaker on the Revolut stage fell…   As for the communication - announcing Massive Attack were playing at 12:30 and then nothing for over an hour while people waited in the rain. It’s laughable it really is.   If I said I’ll never come back again I’d be lying. The shambles of Barcelona 2022 and the disgrace of Madrid 2023 didn’t stop me, so this probably won’t either.   This festival gets so much wrong, but it is always saved by having such killer line-ups. It’s just a shame it treats the fans/customers/consumers like animals. Compare it to somewhere like Glastonbury and it’s worlds apart.
