That might well be it actually, i guess it also opens it up to people who haven't got the full amount straight away and can save the rest until April

Opening it up to people who don't have £200+ straight away is definitely a good thing. However if you made the whole £50 non-refundable it might change a couple of people's minds. (Key words being 'might' and 'couple'!)

Download have a deposit scheme too, you pay x amount and then pay a little bit each month so it is similar, amd Download never sells out

A payment plan is completely different to the Glastonbury deposit scheme. If you sign up to a payment plan you are committing to go from the outset - you just stagger your payments. With Glastonbury, after the deposit you have 6 months without paying anything to see if it is something you really fancy. Also, the fact that Download never sells out says more about that individual festival's appeal than the payment scheme.

But what this means, is that it continues the wide range of ages going, which is great.

Is it for 'the kids' still?

My lad has been to every Glasto in his 18 years, but he's decided not to go next year after suggesting he would do a few weeks ago.

My suspicion is that he's been got at by his girlfriend, who probably wants to drag him off to Reading.

do you get many/any 30-40 year olds at reading these days?

There was a few in 2012 who campted in White, the "quiet" campsite with a real ale bar!

Its noticable its a younger crowd...but there is a few. I guess when the line up is right or if you live nearby its not a bad way to kill a few days.

Fair dos. I reckon if I was 18 I'd just go to the festival that had the fewest young people. I really dont think glastonbury would appeal, regardless of how much stuff there is going on.

That being said, I have no clue what the age demographic of glastonbury was like when I was young. Was it mainly people in their 20s in the 90s? What about in the 80s? I've no idea

It's an interesting question,

I reckon Glastonbury looks pretty 'safe' for the mainstream - so it can be very popular. Is this more so than in the past? I reckon so (though not in the timescale of the original post). That's not a criticism btw - great thing about Glastonbury is how many different festivals you can have.

Also, I think the mainstream has probably moved towards Glastonbury as well - especially in the post-britpop era (again - long timescale).

Gig going has probably got a bit more 'normal' as well - thus is how acts have to make money now, so maybe more people are used to the whole thing.

Plus as well with the security and ticket situation improving in recent years, people may feel "safer" if that's the right term, choosing glastonbury over let's say a reading, V or download.

Just a thought as on Tords glastonbury lowdown he said crime has gone down although maybe not everything is reported... I dunno just reckon it could be one reason why G is so popular for all ages.

Did 2008 really only sell out the day before the festival?

It took 2 hours of F5ing on the T-day Sunday in April, and I was sure it had sold out not long after. Maybe they had some returns in that they didn't shift until late on?

My 19 year old is now not interested in Glasto, and went to Reading this year, despite my offer to buy him his Glasto ticket (and he's not been going all his life, as I'm too selfish a parent for that).

My 16 year old wants to go to every Glasto till he dies, and wants to work at the festival as well, so it still appeals to some!

I find a lot of people go for years then have kids and stop going for a few years then see all the BBC coverage and friends without kids and get a baby sitter for a week or bring them and have a relatively sober Glastonbury. So even the ones who grow out of it, come back into it.

Basically as everyone has already said everyone wants to try it and when they have they love it and want to keep going.

It's the 'Pyramid' effect (no pun intended)... for every one newbie, they will probably convince 1-3 people each. Then the year after, they will convince another 1-3, who will convince another 1-3 people the year after, etc. Just think of all the people converted to Glastonbury just from a friend telling them it was the greatest place on earth.

Because anyone can take as much booze in as they can carry and more and not be ripped off for days on end. Having said that the WBC are the best at what they do supplying excellent stuff at reasonable prices and I believe do a roaring trade at Glasto. And there aren't any arenas or fenced off areas within. Basically once your in you are well and truly in, free to wander anywhere and do as you wish. I would add 'within reason' but Glastonbury festival even bends the rules for the definition of 'reason' year in year out.

That's why. Its not rocket science, if other festivals choose a different route then more fool them.
