Don't ask for your food to be 'extra spicy' no matter how much chilli you like to add. You'll enjoy it at the time however you'll regret the ring of fire hovering over the long drops the following morning

My brother (bless him) on his first visit in 2013 went too hard, too quickly and I was literally carrying his corpse back to the tent at 10:30pm. I guess that's the most common first-timer mistake, but can understand it, the place can be so overwhelming when you see it for the first time

I'm not sure this is limited to first timers. I always tell myself I'm gonna take it easy on the first day. Pace myself a little. Never happens. Usually completely steaming and talking rubbish by mid afternoon!

I will never forget having a wander alone on my first Glastonbury, sitting down in Stone Circle to rest my feet and take it in, only to have a man stumble, sit next to me, rocking back and forth crying... after asking what was wrong, he said the toilet collapsed on him and he couldn't find his mum (this wasn't a child, it was a male mid-30s). I mean he was uncontrollably crying and rocking, to the point where I had to give him some water and a snack take his phone and call his friends to come and collect him. Poor guy was off his face, drunk and just needed his mum! His friends collected him, thanked me and took him back to his tent.. Moral of the story - don't have too much that you cry uncontrollable and thing the toilet caved in on you!

I usually just have awful Monday hangover having never actually sobered up at any stage during the weekend..

This is my first time but i've done my homework, just me and the wife going and I think i'm ready for it.

Except for this..

Once I get in the swing I can see me stuffing Wednesday.. I'm trying mentally to prepare myself not too but I can see it coming a mile off...

Some fantastic advice in here. This is exactly the sort of thing that drew me to this site back in 2008!

Even sensible veterans can get caught out on the Wednesday night. Last year I partook moderately in our favourite West Holt field and Stone Circle activities - nothing I wouldn't normally be able to handle and minor by the rest of the weekend's standards - but ended up curled up on the floor, unable to move or talk but happy enough listening. What had caught me out was the lack of sleep the night before, physical exertion during the day lugging the stuff on site, the heat of the day causing dehydration and not eating enough throughout the day.

Filling up on tartiflette, 7% cider and enhanced tobacco, and not necessarily in that order, was never going to end well. Just a word of caution even to those who don't have an issue - it can go wrong, luckily I had good folk around me. Lesson noted: don't put in so much physical effort this year! :D

If you are a first timer, dont just put your tent up on the Wednesday and sit there drinking all day. Get up wander round the site and take it all in. Stop in various places and have a beer, then you will pace yourself better than necking 20 tins by your tent.

If my brother asks to sit down after sorting the tent out I'll beat him up.

We often spend a few hours at the tent after pitching, open a box of wine and offer words of encouragement to new arrivals carrying all their stuff. We also offer them an opportunity to sit and have a rest while partaking in a game or two of mallet's mallet. We're quite the welcoming committee!!
