it's a fair point - the fleetwood mac / prince situation has left them in the shit, and it's certainly a big name booking to fill the void - i just think it's a bit of a shocker to see them playing. april fool type shocker, you know?

What's obviously needed is for some new bands to really step up and earn the right to headline the pyramid, like how Muse, Coldplay, Killers, Monkeys etc all did recently....hope so!

Metallica only stand out to you because they're not radio-friendly, which is the reality of it. Otherwise, they're up there with the biggest in terms of sales and eclipse large numbers of that list.

It may not of sold out due to the fact its £219.50 for 3 days and camping, for a metal festival that really isn't that strong

fair enough, i tentatively included them cos a) they've done it before, b ) there is a bit of a 90s revival on and should they come with some decent material (unlikely) then they could step up

well yeah, that's the point really - they are a shock choice for headliner because of that. have you ever heard anyone talk about metallica in the context of glastonbury headliner before this all blew up?

anyway this is going nowhere really - I don't think they're a good or popular choice, people in this thread seem to think I'm crazy for saying that, but without any really persuasive reason other than they've sold a lot of records and have apparently major crossover appeal, which is highly dubious.

if they get a big crowd, go down a storm, paving the way for similar acts then I'll gladly come on here and say I was wrong, fair play and all. if on the other hand they get a small or rapidly dwindling crowd, and the general sentiment round the festival this year is that they are a poor choice, well I'll think I was right....we'll see I guess...

And that's kinda my point, if they (and the genre) were as wide appealing as some would suggest they would shift a festival that's smaller than the capacity of the pyramid field by some margin.

With regards to comparisons with dance music I've seen on here, dance didn't take off because Glastonbury gave them a chance, it took off because the genre took off. Metal isn't just arriving into the scene. I can promise (to both fans and non-fans alike) this isn't the the start of glasto going metal. (Else they might start selling as many tickets as sonisphere )

Adele is a glastonbury legendary headliner waiting to happen to be honest. Once she gets over stage fright, if she ever does.

Metallica will probably be the first and only metal/hard rock band to headline glastonbury though I will add.

Now ACDC is an impossibility

Neil young is not really radio friendly. Except for repeat playing of harvest moon. One of the greatest artists ever and one of the best to play the pyramid stage. I can't understand how Adele has been mentioned,a proper legend are you serious. She has made two albums. Commercial radio friendly drivel.
