Also I know it's not the UK but they did headline Oxegen in Ireland too, with Jay-Z subbing them.

I'm not sure Metallica being mindful of their setlist says masses about their suitability. I think in the main they need to ease the crowd in slowly and get the mix right. Lots of acts have to consider altering their setlist when outside of their comfort zone, unless you're a MOR band like Coldplay or Mumford where everything is plain and unobjectionable, it's hardly a new concept. Especially when it comes to festivals you'll find that bands will be more mindful of having a more "safe" greatest hits type set.

Actually I think Master of Puppets as an album lyrically/thematically is really good but it's not a strong point of the band.

If you're not open to listening to the band then there's not much else to say really.

The thing with metallica is most hardcore fans are bored of them now, so if the albums made for the real fans are struggling to ring true I can't see why it would suddenly go down well at Glastonbury. Would be good on the other stage but not the pyramid.

Anyway they are exclusive to a festival already, we all know its prince who's headlining the Saturday so why are we discussing them?

I'd suggest Master of Puppets as a good entry point. Yes the songs are long, but they're pretty much all brilliant, the production's nice and bright, and it shows them at their zenith as songwriters.

I never liked Kill 'Em All (too many songs about wearing leather and liking metal, sounds well wussy these days).

I always thought Ride the Lightning was overrated ("For Whom the Bell Tolls" is a classic though).

... And Justice for All is full of great songs, but the production is dreadful.

Metallica (the black album) is really good, but doesn't sustain its brilliance across all 12 tracks, and starts to drag towards the end.

And I've not listened to any of their subsequent albums. Oh, actually I gave Death Magnetic a spin when it came out, but wasn't impressed.

Anyway, I'll go see them play the Pyramid if there's absolutely nothing better happening (unlikely). When I last saw them, at Leeds 2008, they looked bored with playing the same old songs for the nine hundredth time, and so I got bored too.

I was listening to that at the gym this morning. It's alright - nice and crunchy in places and sufficiently energetic for sporty purposes, though dunno if I see myself ever returning to it much post-June.

about a month back Metallica was all i was listening to at the gym. agree that i doubt i'll be returning to it much after the performance, but i'd forgotten just how much i loved those first five albums. made me very nostalgic

The only reason you could possibly say Metallica fans are "bored" of them is because they've played over here every summer for the last 7/8 years I think so any regular gig/festival goers who like them have seen them multiple times over the last decade. I'd say bored is probably the wrong word but it's not as exciting as it would be if they weren't touring constantly ha.

I don't agree with this granted they play England near enough every year but other parts of the UK such as Scotland where i'm from they never come here so it's a great treat that in coming down for Glastonbury i get to see one of my favourite bands, get to go to Glastonbury, be in another country and see Metallica for the first time since 2009. In my entire life I think Metallica have played Scotland at least 3 or 4 times.
