Metallica 2014

There aren't bad genres, just bad songs... and even then, that's subjective. I don't think you can call all metal "intrinsically shit". Some of the most popular bands in the world came from the Heavy Metal world. Oh, and if you think something being popular makes it shit, despite being probably the only benchmark we have of how 'good' something is (by common consensus), you're a bellend. Intrinsically.

Name a list of critically good pieces of work from the heavy metal genre. And yes, overwhelmingly more often than not something being popular usually means it's likely to be shit - have you checked the top 10 lately. Most music listeners are casual or fashion followers and don't listen to music with the same critical thought and understanding than the 'more capable' music listeners. Think of it is as: millions can run the 100 metres in 20 seconds, only a smaller more enabled amount can do it in below 15 seconds

Regarding the genre differences: you can generally convert a heavy rock (metallica/enter shikari/acdc) fan to an alternative rock (radiohead/smiths/floyd) fan, but you can't do it the other way around. This is because alternative rock sits above heavy rock as a genre and once you understand the best bands of that genre, you understand why and how heavy rock is flawed and extremely limited as an artistic pallet. It's like graduating to the next level. Radiohead fans understand why metallica are enjoyed by their fans and can dissect the psychology of the music; ask a metallica fan to explain the same about radiohead fans and they will likely come out with ignorant, limited response: i.e "depressing" - simply because they don't have the tools understand it. Heavy rock is primary school, alternative rock is university.

I know that reads pretencious but sometimes the truth is

You sound like 14 year old me when I'd just discovered Radiohead and momentarily decided that everything else was sub-par and stupid. I then went on to grow up, of course. :D

Metallica have probably sold 100 million albums worldwide. They are a huge band and have been for years. Its good that they will be headlining . They might not be everyone's cup of tea. But oasis ain't my cup of tea. If you don't like them watch something else easy. Anyone watching Metallica enjoy . I'm sure they will nail it!

I liked Radiohead before I liked Metallica and Enter Shikari. QED.

Seriously, though, why does anyone have to be 'converted'? Why can't they like both? I like both.

Someone actually upvoted your post. Holy shit.

garth brooks has sold over 100m albums. Would you people be happy for him to headline?

That was me, because he's spot on when he says metallica is extremely limited music.

I've watched the youtube videos of them linked on here, and they are videos of them at their very best I assume.

Metallica is a niche band, I can certainly give you that, but so much of that generalising nonsense doesn't deserve to be given any credit whatsoever.

I was introduced to metal music fairly late on. Huge pop music fan, still am, and found it very easy to get into metal, first through Maiden, then Metallica and then more.

I guess you can like both for different purposes. I often listen to some music i know isn't very good or made by a particular talented musician just because it reminds me of being in a time or place, or because it helps me do something when played in the background. I just can't imagine anyone sitting down and singularly listening to a heavy rock album appreciating the artistic depth, concepts, themes, vision and craft that went into it than listening to say the queen is dead, ok computer, dark side of the moon, ageatis byrjun etc..

Metallica are a popular, regular festival act. No-one above them in terms of sales is, that hasn't already been booked (Springsteen, although his conversion to playing festivals is still very recent and limited). This a reason why they have been booked, and a lot of people are happy about it.

All of this sounds like every teenage argument we had in the 90s (albeit slightly more articulate/in some cases ...not all!). I feel like I've been sucked into some weird time vortex.Next thing someone is gonna say all dance music is shit...oh, hang on they probably just did....

Alternative rock is what got me into rock music (like when I was 14), I've only recently started to get into heavier stuff now and I'm nearly 21.

I can also do the 100m in 11 seconds...

Yeah he probably has. He is utterly shit in my opinion. But someone must like him. I think the bulk of his following is in the USA. I doubt people would be happy for him to play. Its unlikely he could ever headline any kind of festival in the UK. Metallica are massive all over the world. They headline festivals all over the world. Garth brooks is well a man with a big hat.

i'll put it another way...

acts with limited appeal shouldn't be headlining the pyramid on a saturday night....they should appeal to a diverse range of music fans, because that's the audience.

But they only have 'limited appeal' because you don't like them. Mumford and Sons have limited appeal to me. I still think they were fit to headline though.

I will repeat that I think Glastonbury attendees are some of the most open-minded music fans around.

you are one person, and in this case i would argue the exception. if there was some way to conduct a study on the general cross-genre movement, id bet my life on you moving into heavy traffic. Pop music would be the ultimate example for this, but i still maintain it is applicable to heavy rock <> alternative rock.

I'll ask again. Where are we drawing the line at "limited appeal"?

I need to note again that Metallica do have a big crossover fanbase. They're pretty much as commercial as metal gets and this is why they're such a big act. Because they're not that heavy a lot of the time.

And going back to "limited appeal", you could say Arcade Fire have limited appeal. Just a different way of saying it.

Then you've got a poor imagination. Theres plenty of us out there who appreciate music for what it is no matter the genre. I like Metallica, I like The Smiths/Morrissey, my music playlist for work is over 1000 songs long and there is a bit of everything on there. One minute im listening to The Who, next song could be QOTSA, then it could be Pink.
