I love the way an Oasis thread gets to 21 pages on here, esp. when there's cat in hell's chance they'll be at Glasto this year (and ever again imo, definitely should not be on the rumour page for 2014!). But they still seem totally relevant for a good discussion. This is an ode to big joe tbh, speaking as a massive Oasis fan myself, and sharing his views. Oasis were indeed the bollocks, but fans always be fighting a loosing battle on this forum for sure.

Oasis are a marmite band, if there was ever such a description. To be honest I would rather people despise them rather than only liking the band on the back of Wonderwall or Don't Look Back in Anger, and claiming to be fans. They are skip tracks for me, and Oasis offered much more. The Gallagher brothers were probably to blame for their marmite disposition. Often from mis-guided opinions I feel, media picking up on specific comments from interviews and runing with them. Noel is a genius in both his songwriting and his media interaction. Liam also knows how to play the media (not that that makes them better than anyone else musically, but as booted_raver said it's Liam's idea of 'rock and roll' for him to be seen as a hell raiser from time to time. Just listen to Wibbling Rivalry from back in the day ;),, it was ther from the start)

As far as progression goes, Beady Eye's second album is as good as it gets.. If only Noel hadn't bottled releasing his Amorphous Androgynous album (though, I don;t think I would have loved it - it would have been 'different')

Soz Wooderson, I meant from a Gallagher brother prospective that BE was slightly different, well produced and a bit 'out of the normal'..(from the Oasis tradition). I'll admit that it is not like pet sounds, and I wouldn't want it to sound like it to be honest. :P

Damn, i'm seeing Beady Eye next week and Gimme Shelter would have been a great surprise. Oh well. Liam has been struggling with his live vocals since the 05' tour, i think as a consequence of his shout delivery. Listening to live stuff from the Be Here Now tour his voice is incredibly strong and tough. He could shout all tour long. Like with the band themselves, his vocals seemed to inspire strong reactions of love or hate. When i first heard him shouting and stretching out those syllables i just thought 'I gotta hear me some more of that!'.

No more Tom Waits suggestions? Come on people.

Very different, aren't they. Early Tom Waits and then later stuff. I'd go Rain Dogs, Heart of Saturday Night and the most recent one to give you a flavour of what he's all about.

I dunno, I'm a sucker for early Tom. 'Hope that I don't fall in love with you' reduces me to tears every fucking time. Think the first album I bought was 'Nighthawks at the Diner'

I got quite a bit on vinyl from when I was buying records at the start of the 90s. They're not that hard to find if you do the rounds of the 2nd hand places.

But yeah, my vinyl habit is well out of control at the moment. Need to rein it in a bit.

Right then, after looking at your replies, listening to a few iTunes previews and consulting several lists, i have made my decision.....

Swordfishtrombones it is!

Two different lists i saw put Rain Dogs at number one so i thought i'd leave that so there would be something to look forward to. I shall report back soon. Thanks for all your suggestions. I only pray there is something as good as Little James on this...

I got pissed with Oasis the day they had the launch party for WTSMG, and chucked Liam off my chair in the pub.

They were Brit Pop tbh, and just what the country needed coming out of a nasty recession.

The only band I have known where the whole pub would stop to sing a long.

We even got Liam prancing about playing air guitar to Blur that day.

Happy memories.

Love to see them at Glasto, though their gig in 98 Sheffield left me pretty bored.

I honestly don't get what all the hate is about..

Definitely maybe is one of the best debut albums ever released.

Morning Glory, arguably one of the best albums ever released.

Be here now, i'll agree it was too long and wasn't their best work..by far but it still has some gems in it (D'you know what I mean especially)

Standing on the shoulders of giants was a good album: Go let it out, Who feels love, Gas Panic, Roll it over and F*cking in the bushes are all great songs.

Heathen Chemistry: Stop crying your heart out, Songbird, Little by little and born on a different crowd all great.

Don't believe the truth: In my opinion their second best album and their return of form..Lyla, The importance of being idle, let there be love, love like a bomb..all fantastic.

Dig out your soul: Again not their best album..imo only The shock of the lightning, Falling Down and I'm outta time are really worth listening to.

If you take into account all the b-sides such as The masterplan, Stay Young, Listen Up, Lets all make believe, Half the world away etc etc..they have some fantastic songs and where at a point in time the best/biggest band in the world.

In my opinion their downfalls were themselves and the media..the fact that they kept comparing themselves/were compared to the beatles was something quite big to live up to considering the beatles' huge success and even though they use beatles references in their lyrics I don't see how they're considered a rip off of the band..yes they were influenced by The rolling stones, the stone roses and The beatles..everyones influenced by someone.

Their other downfall was after such a big debut album, then releasing an even better album and one of the best ever..they flopped with Be here now (even though it sold 9mil albums) it was far from their first 2, and couldn't live up to the quality of DM and WTSMG..which is understandable considering how good they are/were.

Hating a band because of their arrogance is one thing, saying they're shit is another.

I can see why people would hate them because of their attitude, but the songs they released makes it too hard for me to hate them..

    • A win is a win but it was a very poor game with only 4 shots on target in the whole game. Scotland obviously handed a massive bonus with Brazil and Morocco drawing but I don't think either of them will be too worried.
