Why not rock?

Metal is alrite it's just bands like Slipknot who wear fucking weird masks to cover their hideous faces that I'm not a fan of. Also the air guitar pose 'metal heads' do when they place their legs really far apart from eachother and squat down only very slightly (maybe about a inch or 2). This is how it looks:

The first gig I ever went to was Iron Maiden. 1981 it was £2.00 to get in (get on with it Grandad!).

Bloody marvellous it was too but then Bruce joined and after 1 decent album with him it swiftly went downhill. I still stuck with them though until 7th Son came out and I couldn't take no more.

The suggestion that they could headline Glastonbury is, I'm afraid, laughable. Totally wrong band in the wrong place. I do however believe there is room for more rock at G. Bourban Blues Bar was really missed this year, It's probably not that dificult to find some none dance music after hours but when you do, it doesn't seem too long before the band/act finishes and the DJ sticks fecking Get Lucky on. Again.

I'm all for more rock at Glastonbury and some of the stuff being suggested sounds interesting. But it's not like there's nothing. QOTSA, Pumpkins, Dinosaur jnr...

I think there should be place for rock (as op asks), and it has just as much right to be there as the seemingly 100s of dj sets in the ever expanding dance area, the Latino area, the reggae, the world music etc etc.

And to say that it's attracting the wrong crowd is rubbish, as qotsa, enter shikari , prodigy , etc can play both mainstream festivals and "metal" festivals.

My music taste is wide, and in my teens I wouldn't listen to anything but rock/hm. Now I can pallet anything from kenny Rogers to daft punk to show of hands to zeppelin. What is sad to see is people berating others for their personal musical tastes and mocking bands who have got to the top of their tree because its not to their taste. I thought GLASTO goers were a bit more open minded... I'd like to see a corner of GLASTO for rock music, if you don't like it then seek something else

This whole argument is daft. The festival does very much cater for rock, with recent bookings including Smashing Pumpkins, QOTSA, Dinosaur Jr, 65 days of static, Enter Shikari etc etc. What it doesn't cater for is the heavier end of the rock spectrum, much in the same way it doesn't cater for the most poppy end of the spectrum (so no Justin Bieber, One Direction), and usually only features the kind of hip hop artists that would get a write up in the NME.

People suggesting that there is no place for rock/metal at Glastonbury need their head checked. Of course there is a place for heavy rock and metal at Glastonbury. The same as there is a place for a host of niche musical styles and genres. Where and when would very much have to be selected in an appropriate manner based obviously on how popular an individual act would be with the "standard Glastonbury crowd". And a late night bar/area playing such music would be a good permanent addition for those who have had their fill of all types of dance music in the late night areas.

Those suggesting that the likes of Iron Maiden should headline or would be popular (or in reality known!) to the vast majority of the Glastonbury going crowd also need their heads checked.............

Metal at Glastonbury? Yes, why not.

Metal as a headline act? No. Not going to happen. Its very difficult to do, considering ME simply does not want it, and there would be a limited amount of acts who could in reality pull it off..............I personally think Metallica are the only metal band to have enough significant crossover to be able to make a real go of it and potentially have some success, but Id still doubt it would be a classic for all in attendance, or viable as a BBC hit at home with the folks on their couches (and that means something these days unfortunately)

Metallica have asked numerous times to play Glasto and have been refused on all occasions. Metallica are actually a little obsessed with Glastonbury and have even set up there own festival to try and get sort of "Glastonbury" thing going in the US. They have set it up in such a way that they wont even turn a profit on the fest for the first few years, such is the level of commitment to this type of project they have..............

Yet they still get knocked back..............It will not happen as long as ME is about, unless he all of a sudden changes the habit of a life time..........

Surely bands such as Motorhead, Saxon, AC/DC etc. with their millions of album sales; 35+ years of activity; and band members pushing retirement age, have earned their place in a certain Sunday afternoon slot on the Pyramid Stage?

I have a vision of a sea of grey, balding, ponytailed fans in band t-shirts sat on leather picnic blankets and black studded camping chairs.

Surely more popular in the UK than Kenny Rogers or Paul Simon, with at least as many "hits". The amount of chairs; age of fans; early slot would prevent any death rush or mosh pit action.

Do this for 3 years in a row, then this pointless argument about the presence of metal / hard rock at Glasto could be put to bed. Everyone's a winner?

Good post, completely agree with that.

I could see Metallica headlining The Other Stage but unless their next album suddenly gains widespread appeal, I just don't think the Pyramid will ever happen.

That was an entertaining read. Something to think about re safety at download vs glastonbury.

Slipknot, headline act for dl this year were stopped 4 times by crowd spotters posted on the stage. They saw people go down in the pits and that they weren't getting up again, so they stopped it.

Now think about some of the crowd conditions people have been describing at the stones at the front, trying not to crash into chairs.

Paranoia can drive some really sensible precautions.

I heard a band telling the crowd to push back off the barrier for the first time ever at a festival - during chase and status. Not enter shikari or smashing pumpkins...
