Glastonbury Bucket List

Hi everyone,

Its my first Glasto and I want to make sure I squeeze every last drop out of it. I can sleep in July.

What should be on my "Must do" list (bar the main acts obviously)? There Wed eve-Mon morn.

See if any regular goes can finish the sentence "You haven't been to Glastonbury if you haven't..."

The best advice is to just go with an open mind and wander around, you will have so much fun. Things will just pop on you when you least expect it thus the enjoyment will be all the better. That being said go up to the stone circle and watch the sun set.

I would say going to see the main acts is far from a must do.

The festival operates a competitive lineup at different stages in an attempt to reduce over crowding at any one stage. This means that the time the best acts are on at the pyramid, park or other stage, every where else will also be putting on some of the best things. Try some of the smaller venues at peak times, I am sure you won't be disappointed.

Sunrise at stone circle

Headliner on pyramid

Try and spend 5 mins at every stage if possible?

Late night areas at 3am - 5am (not before when its stupidly rammed)

Eat in the greenfields

Have a camp fire with strangers

Perform on stage (hip hop karaoke is an easy way, getting on the pyramid could be difficult)

Wander around and do a strange activity (roller skating in a tent with a wooden floor, tomato fight, go to a wedding, have happened before and can again)

I hate the expression 'bucket list'. Just thought I'd throw that in there.

To the OP, life isn't about ticking boxes. Just go, enjoy it, have the time of your life, and try not to worry about ticking things off a list. You'll have a much better time as a result! :)

well I started going 34 years ago and have not missed any since { apart from the actual gap years } and I an sure I have not seen everything yet and I think its the wrong approach to take a tick box approach.
You cant cover it all so don't even try.

There's a thread on here with loads of "Glasto top 5's" that loads contributed to for another Glasto virgin. If you search, you'll find it - it's not that old.

HOWEVER.

The best thing about Glasto in my opinion is its ability to genuinely surprise and delight you at entirely random times and in random places.

Example: I'm watching Punks Not Dads at the bandstand, I've never heard of them before and I'm really enjoying it. They give out a flat packed IKEA piece of furniture to the audience with the challenge to build it before the set has finished and I'm giggling watching that. Then a guy walks past in full costume looking like Uncle Fester pushing an old style pram with a doll in it. I turn round to see him and he stares at me square in the face for about 5 seconds. I'm unnerved. Then he rummages in the pram and pulls out a flower, which he gives to me with no change in expression and walks on.

How on Earth could you predict that in a million years? Wonderful, memorable and delightful.

Whilst I'll agree that you should never feel obliged to watch a main stage act, there's just something about a Pyramid Stage headliner that's just so...magical.

Beyond that, apart from wandering and finding your own small joys, I'd advise you to put as much effort into choosing dinner as you would in choosing which bands to watch. The food at Glastonbury is phenomenal, so don't ever settle for burger and chips. You'll develop your own favourites just by opting for whatever smells the nicest, but for me it gets no finer than the wood-fired pizzas found near the entrance to the Green Fields.

But as that 4assedmonkey asserted above, it's the unpredictable that really makes the festival. I once saw a wizard with a camcorder filming a carpenter.

Everyone's saying not to box tick and just to wander round and be free, and while I would agree, I don't think it's such a bad thing to have a list - just to remind you of what's out there.

There is so much going on that you can easily miss so many things. In a way that's good because it means that there will always be something new for you to try every year.

But it's really annoying when you get back and talk to someone and they say "Oh my god, you didn't visit [...]! That's the best part of the festival!" and then you have regrets and have to wait a whole year to see what you were missing out on.

Maybe write a bucket list but don't check it until the Saturday/Sunday. That way you can experience it freely to start with but check at the end what you have missed.

I'm trying to think of something's I haven't done that I would like to but never got round to

Hang out at Camp strummerville

See the sun rise at stone circle, will have to be on Wednesday or Thursday so I can sleep it off

Find the underground piano bar,if indeed it exists

Dance and drink at a wine bar

Go down rabbit hole

See a full set at jp tent.. I've hung around outside but never managed to get a decent spot. Maybe will for johnny marr
