Is Nick Cave as a sub the wrong choice?

Excuse me while I reminisce..

I then saw NC and the Bad Seeds for the first time again the Electric Ballroom in November 1984. Here's the setlist:

Blind Lemon Jefferson/ From Her To Eternity/ Say Goodbye To The Little Girl Tree/ Knockin' On Joe/ Black Crow King/ Train Long Suffering/ Well Of Misery/ Saint Huck/ Knockin' On Heaven's Door

and then again at the Hammersmith Palais in April 1985 (supported by Sonic Youth - what a fucking gig). Here's the setlist:

Blind Lemon Jefferson/ Sad Dark Eyes/ Tupelo/ Well Of Misery/ Wanted Man/ Say Goodbye To The Little Girl Tree/ Knockin' On Joe/ Train Long Suffering/ Saint Huck/ Avalanche/ Black Crow King/ Wild World/ Jennifer's Veil.

what I wouldn't give for that setlist at Pilton - except maybe end the set with Sonny's Burning..."hands up who wants to die..." that'll put the shits up the Mumfords :)

sensational stuff.

I remember seeing them at glastonbury in 1994 and there were a lot of stunned people in the crowd then, especially during loverman

L is for LOVE, baby

O is for ONLY you that I do

V is for loving VIRTUALLY all that you are

E is for loving almost EVERYTHING that you do

R is for RAPE me

M is for MURDER me

A is for ANSWERING all of my prayers

N is for KNOWING your loverman's going to

be the answer to all of yours

great stuff

I particularly remember the '85 Palais gig because Nick was, shall we say, very refreshed and in those days there was still a significant proportion of the crowd who would shout for Birthday Party songs. So Nick decides that they will do a BP song or two. Blixa objects very robustly and they start hammering the shit out of each other, or at least trying to. Nick goes arse over tit and tears the arse out of his trousers and they both storm off, leaving the rest of the band looking slightly bemused. Ten minutes later, they come back on and Wild World and Jennifer's Veil. Electric stuff...

Okay, I'm really jealous now. Would give anything to have seen The Birthday Party. I was only one at the time but someone should have taken me anyway.

He still plays Tupelo quite a lot doesn't he? Did he do it last time?

I'd say he's quite wealthy by now. Someone told me the cover of Push The Sky Away was shot in his house, which suggests it's rather a nice one, but not sure if that's true. And, you know, those sharp suits don't buy themselves.

I think the fact that all 3 sub headliners have played the same slot reasonably recently adds to why it looks a little boring on paper, but that's little to do with Nick Cave/ Dizzee/ Primal Scream rather than how it was booked. I agree with others it would be better if he was on the Other, swapped with xx but you take what you can get.

Swap him and The XX round, that way all the Radio 1 listeners can have their evening at The Pyramid and I can see PiL>The Smashing Pumpkins>Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.

Nice one.

Yeh I agree with all that.

I wonder how rich nick cave is, and so how bothered they are by extra sales etc?

Seems from this photo he drives a nice car at least!

I guess he can buy a new one whenever he wishes, almost worth writing your car off with that object in mind. "Nick Cave is an Australian screenwriter, songwriter, musician, composer, author, and occasional film actor with an estimated net worth of $5 million in 2012".

Don't know the truth behind that statement but I'd imagine you don't get that kind of money by not giving a shit about it.

yeah putting him up against the Pumpkins is a big mistake as i imagine they have quite a crossover fanbase (me included) therefor lessening the amount of people in his crowd actually wanting to see him and not just waiting for Mumfords. i was honestly surprised when i heard that the Blur crowd didn't receive him well - maybe that's just my overly-high opinion of Blur fans though - so i really do imagine a vast portion of the crowd won't have the slightest clue who he is

You say that as if they two are dependant on each other though?

The majority of the crowd won't be up for it & will be waiting for Mumford & Sons to come on. It'll be full of radio 1 listeners talking over the top asking "is this that guy who sang with Kylie?" "Didn't they used to date?" "Nah that was that bloke who shot himself from Nirvana" "No that's Kurt Cobain, you mean that bloke who hung himself from INXS" whilst eating their packed lunches, getting money from their bum bags to pay for over priced miniature bottles of wine & dancing around folding chairs like great aunties at a wedding on heat.

Plus the clash with the Smashing Pumpkins will divide the more "alternative" Glastonbury crowd, therefore artist of the weekend though he may be, the slot he's been given is completely wrong.

Oh he's big enough, that's just the ignorance of people who either don't get his music or don't know who he is placing their own opinions/music taste over the reality of the situation... It's similar to Morrissey in 2011, he should never have subbed to U2, the crowd weren't into it. They'd have been better off having Primal Scream sub & clashing Moz with U2.

I do question why you would have Nick Cave clashing with the Pumpkins & then have the XX clashing with Mumford & Sons, it seems to make no sense to me but hey ho. I'm a massive Nick Cave fan, but his placing on the line up (along with the fact I'm seeing him later in the year anyway) has made the decision to chose the Pumpkins slightly easier.

None of my friends who are Nick Cave fans, could give a fuck about The Smashing Pumpkins. I don't think the cross over is that big. I've seen the Pumpkins live twice, and was disappointed both times. Nick Cave blew me away. The Mercy Seat, what a song.

I think the Mumfords are the wrong band to follow Nick Cave, they're the problem here

Plus it's a sad day if we can't have the odd challenging band on the Pyramid. Dizze may be a likeable fellow, but there's room for other stuff. It hasn't got to be radio 1 friendly all day.

Anyway, that's only my opinion.
