Is Nick Cave as a sub the wrong choice?

As far as quite a few people I know are concerned he has three songs: "Are You The One That I've Been Waiting For?", "The Ship Song" and "Where The Wild Roses Grow". This, however, can be explained by Singstar (a guilty pleasure I probably shouldn't admit to) and my insisting on singing them every time we play (including sometimes having to do both the Nick and Kylie part at the same time due to others not wanting to sing them)!! For the record, I've had over 9500 on "The Ship Song" - oooooh! Get me!

I generally agree with Russy, in that I feel RRH is his most well-known song, albeit with a lot of people that know the song not knowing it's Nick Cave.

I think to a lot of people my age (mid-thirties) he very much is "the fella that killed Kylie" but these are generally people that would have watched Beyonce and long for the day that Steps are the Sunday legends. In other words, people that (without realising it) hate music.

I'm looking forward to seeing Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, but I can't help feel bemused about them being on before the Mumfords, and how those plaid-clad people rushing to the front row will be wondering what's going on.

With black humour and my inference of underlying psychosis in most of the songs, the venue would be better being smaller and darker than the Pyramid stage, but he's certainly got many songs to draw on that will fill that space. I doubt he'd do Red Right Hand, as he did that last time (2010?), but will they do many from Push the Sky Away, as that's not the most instantly accessible album for the general punter, even though they're touring with that album this year?

I only heard of him first when Arctic Monkeys covered him. It's got to the point now that I rely on this site and festival lineups to discover new bands. I don't listen to any music radio and don't buy music magazines unless they contain something specific I want to read. Mostly because I can't abide these NME hype bands and whatever's in the charts.

And it's due to this site that I properly checked out Nick Cave and loved him.

Here's a thought. Could NCATBS do the whole of "Push the Sky Away" as a secret set somewhere and then just do a "best of" set on the Pyramid? Just imagine getting into the Piano Bar and finding Nick sat a Piano playing the whole of PTSA.

That would be amazing. Unlikely though. I've never found the piano bar - how do you know who's playing there or do you literally just have to stumble on it?

I think it would be better the other way round though. Push the new album on Pyramid and do a stripped-down greatest hits on the piano.

I've found it once but I'm buggered if I can remember how we got to it - it's up the top of the festival somewhere. I don't think there's ever been a line up for it and when I was there it was just some young bloke playing tunes. A mate of mine swears he saw Damon Albarn in there a few years back, though.

It would only be better the other way round if I was definitely in to watch the Piano Bar set! Otherwise it would be bloody awful! Aren't I selfish?

Also true. Where are you seeing him? I'll be at Hammersmith - can't wait! Although will have to.

Let's face it - whatever he plays will be amazing and the crowd probably won't be that receptive. Just keep your back to them!

I've done nothing all day but talk about Nick Cave. I knew joining this forum was a bad idea.

so the Coachella set list was:

Jubilee Street

Push the Sky Away
It was only a 50 minute set so I imagine we will get 4 extra songs. They are performing with a childrens choir so I think we will definitely get O Children. Plus Higgs Boson Blues and maybe Love Letter and Tupelo would be my guess (based on their tour setlists)
Here is a snippet of info about the bad seeds set (from Guardian)
For a moment it seems as if Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, second on the bill at the main stage, have found themselves in a Stone Roses situation. The crowd is criminally small, and Cave is making no concessions for a festival crowd, despite opening with a friendly "Hi kids", and bringing out a children's choir. But as he roars through Stagger Lee – "just count the holes in the motherfucker's head" – it's clear he isn't so much here to rock the party as scare the shit out of it. He brings class and thrills, and it's a welcome reminder that the desert can be gothic too.

Christ I nearly dropped my phone in excitement! I have never seen From Her To Eternity live despite it being my favourite! Shit!

And Jack The Ripper!

Sounds like an awesome set, shame the crowd was small but sounds like he gave them hell. Is there any footage online? Had a brief look at Coachella Live but couldn't see him...

I'd rather see Papa Won't Leave You Henry than Tupelo as I've seen the latter loads but yes, any of the above would rule.

From Her To Eternity would actually make my entire festival. It's the song that converted me from casual fan to obsessive fanatic after seeing it in Wings of Desire.

Does it make us Cave-heads odd that we are all so clearly excited by the idea that he specifically doesn't pander to a festival crowd and, in fact, goes out of his way to intimidate it?! Or was it just me that read the snippet from the Guardian and thought "Good - get rid of the casuals with anger and vitriol"? Probably but I won't be alone in thinking it would be marvellous if he forced a whole bunch of Mumfords fans to go for a walk rather than camp in their chairs at the front (waving their flags and recording the festival on their ipads).

I havent looked as at work but there will be as it was all streamed. I saw no pussy blues from the grinderman set on youtube and it was amazing. The crowd just seemed bemused by it all

Yep I'd say from her to eternity is 99.99% certain. Excellent!

Just looking through some set lists and I reckon we'll could get papa wont leave you henry instead of tupelo.

Shame there are quite a few repeats from 2009 set but I'm not complaining!

if it doesn't, his set is on the coachella channel 2 at 6.05 into the rebroadcast. intense isn't in it! i think it'll only be there for today but it'll turn up again somewhere else later.
