Is Nick Cave as a sub the wrong choice?

Nick Cave is worthy of the highest slots. I was there in 2009 and he was amazing. Everyone around me seemed to be like, "who is this bloke? When does he piss off so I can hear Coffee and TV?"

He would be better appreciated headlining a smaller stage I'm sure. Wherever he plays I won't be missing it. And you shouldn't either.

I have to say I am staggered by the word 'boring'. I am a massive fangirl and get that they might be an acquired taste but they are far from boring. I can't think of another artist whose back catalogue is so hugely varied, who constantly pushes the boundaries, whose sound is constantly evolving and who is, quite simply, one of the most bewitching and unsettling live performers of all time.

But that's just me.

I see that Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are playing a gig a the Barrowlands on Halloween which has already sold out, so although I don't know much about them I realise they are clearly a pretty popular act.

Thinking about it a bit more, isn't he that dude that did a duet with Kylie Minogue?

Hang on .... I never said Pendulum are a better act, just with a more current well known/commercial stuff which suited the pre-Bryonce crowd.

And being mid 30's I had heard of him but with the exception of the song with Kyle had no knowledge of any of his work.

Maybe people are right and he's been put there as a contrast to the Mumfords, but I think and someone else mentioned it, ....however good his music is its not instantly accessible and will therefore go under appreciated by the majority of the crowd. This is why I think subbing the headline act on main stage needs to be a bit more either current or known ie Dizzie & Primal Scream.

I'm delighted he's playing but I am worried thats not a great slot for him. Would prefer to see him in the dark.

I first saw him at T in the Park a few years ago, knew very little of his music but I enjoyed every minute of his set. He was up against KoL though so had a much smaller audience than he deserved.

My opening post just asked if people thought he would be suited to another slot/stage. Some feel he would be better served in the dark and suggested the Other as headliner.

Keep fishing Russy you cheeky little troll

Nick Cave is exactly the kind of artist that should be getting prime positions at Glastonbury, although I agree that he may not be suited to a spot on the mainstream/commercial avalanche of shite that is the Pyramid Stage.

I suspect it depends on whether Galstonbury (or the Pyramid Stage in particular) panders to the masses or tries to lead them. I suspect it's a bit of both and he's there to add credibility and quality, which is why he seems so out of place.

But then again so do Primal Scream, they're one of my favourite bands but they wouldn't get anywhere near subbing the main stage at any other major festival (I guess they're just there to warm up for the Stones, so I doubt they'll be playing any of their good stuff).

A better question would be should mumford and sons be headlining.. they hardly have the broad appeal expected of a glastonbury headliner. I keep hoping nievely that there has been some sort of terrible mistake and theres still another headliner to be announced, and mumford are subbing. Doesnt seem likely though!

Im gonna try and get myself into the XX in the next few weeks, if not it'll be an early start down at shangri-la for me on the sunday, which is looking a weak day for me. Fingers crossed i'll discover some hidden gem in a tent somewhere.

I'd say so. And they've got a lot more material to choose from.

There's never been the same buzz about mumfords as there was about arctic monkeys. When they headlined in 2007(?) they really felt like they were something special - similar to how oasis were when they headlined in 1995 after just 2 albums (was morning glory even out then? I forget).

mumfords have never been like that
