For those who think 2011 wasn't too bad, I thought it was a nightmare. All that rain on the Friday made the ground really muddy, it was a slog getting around on the Saturday. Then the bloody sun comes out scorrchio on Sunday, way too hot and all the water evaporates which created humidity.

Maybe I'm looking back through rose tinted specs, but really don't remember it being that bad. Yes the mud was a bit of an effort, but the only time the rain really bothered us was watching primal scream on the Friday - we were so cold we had to give in and go back to the tent. I struggled a bit with the heat on Sunday, but only because I had one of the worst hangovers of my life (after spending several hours on Saturday night crawling around in the mud at the sides of the railway track...).

However my husband now has a ticket for this year, and for that reason I'm desperate for it to be drier. Originally he wasn't going to come because he has some problems with the muscles in his legs which would men he'd really struggle in 2011 mud. We got him the ticket in the knowledge that if it looked like being a muddy one he wouldn't come, but since we were successful in the resale he would now be devastated if he didn't come.

You can predict weather trends based on things like jet stream position, north atlantic oscillations etc ..

Yeah, you can't do an accurate weather forecast, but If the met office says things are set up for an unsettled few weeks then chances of wet weather is increased.

Saying that, its the sun, and I'll leave people on here who are more clued up on these matters to make their own interpretation of what the met office is saying.

unfortunately whilst that sun article is bending what the metoffice said for its own sensationalism there is some concern for the coming summer. The jet is once again going south and if the greenland high takes hold again like the past 5 odd summers we are going to have another unsettled summer. We don't seem to get postivie NAO's in summer these days, bloody climate change, Its snowing over some of the Scottish Mountains today lol. However - it's only mid-may so there is plenty of time for the suggestive pattern to change. :) NFRNFC

Of course there's concern, but a bit of jet-wobbling is perfectly normal. In two weeks time I'll start actually worrying or not but for now that's just a great way to sell papers - just like the "BBQ summer at last" headlines last year.

going straight to solid sun all high pressure blocking is a bad thing, and unlikely to hold until glasto time anyhow

There's a danger though of predicting this summer's long term prospects from those of previous years,

Southerly tracking jet is obviously a concern just now, but the fact we couldn't get rid of it last summer doesn't necessarily mean it can't play ball and retreat further North this year. Like frostypaw said -- see what happens over the next 2-3 weeks. Even the rather downbeat current Met Office 15 day forecast is suggestuing improvements by the end of the month.

So the jet stream has moved to its now regular spot after all, causing unsettled weather? I admire some people's optimism but can't share it. This all sounds very familiar unfortunately.
