Thats fucking wonderful news! I only have II so far and it sounds the biz. Can't even imagine what In My Time of Dying, Kashmir, Bron-Yr-Aur, Wanton Song etc will sound like!

I love the concept of collecting records and listening to vinyl records and i'm looking to start but it would be with a tight budget, i.e. I'm looking to buy a record player for £50-100 and would want to aim to buy a record a month (or whenever i find some on the cheap)

alternatively, i have a decent CD collection and Spotify, so i could just put that money (+ a good amount more that i would put aside for records) into getting some quality speakers to dress up some MP3s

- thoughts on a cheap vinyl player (maybe an amazon one with inbuilt speakers?) vs a decent set of speakers for mp3/CDs?

Id get something within budget but be confident that you can "upgrade" any/all components at a later stage. From personal experience the amp is a really important element and worth an extra bit of cash. Speakers are the easiest to get second hand and in great condition.

The amp is pretty important. But if you want to get something within budget, to be easily upgradeable, I'd start with getting a decent turntable, with, most importantly, a decent cartridge that's lined up and weighted properly. If you have a dodgy stylus, every time you play your vinyl, you'll be ever so slightly (or not so slightly) damaging the record. And, it's the very start of the process of getting the sound from your vinyl. If the cartridge is average, it doesn't matter how good the amp or speakers are, you'll be limited by it's (the cartridge) capabilities

Would i be fair astray trying one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ion-Max-LP-Conversion-Turntable/dp/B00COC61LO/ref=pd_cp_rec-ht_0

and hooking them up to some £60 hifi + upgrading parts as i progress with the vinyl game

Honestly, Id stay clear of any of those vinyl to mp3 types. I'd dip into the 2nd hand market before you go that route.

A very quick google brings up a few options. Here and here.

As Tony said, the first thing to get right is the turntable and cartridge. You can upgrade thew rest if and when but if you have a crappy turntable you're getting the cart before the horse if you know what I mean?

If you're willing to spend £100, why not wait a few months and save up another £100-£150 and get a good one?

You'll never be 100% happy with the sound or setup by the way!

and weighted properly

Mine isn't at the moment. Weighed down a tad but I can't find the damn allen key to loosen the bastard.

Back in the day there was a Linn Sondek moment within the group of people I knew. The first one to get one used all the cash he had so had to play through some Amstrad speakers. It still sounded great.

Not saying buy a Linn, just emphasising the comments, makes good sense.

    • Aldous Harding absolutely brilliant in Dublin last night. Quirky as ever but sounded magnificent. Played everything off the new album I think, it all sounded fantastic. Band, including H Hawkline, were understated but excellent. Another one to look forward to.
    • Orbital opening the Other stage is a bold choice!
    • Great start for them
    • Thanks so much - that's very helpful. Someone else mentioned getting a train from Loughborough to East Midlands Parkway, and then a festival shuttle from there to the site. I think they were then going to come back on the Skylink Derby to Loughborough - I assume this is because the trains don't run as late as the Skylink, otherwise they would just come back the same way they came?! Is the transport hub a long way from the main stage? Just wondering what time I would need to leave Linkin Park to be sure of getting a shuttle. As I say, I am sure it will all be clear on the day, even after a few beers! Just hope the rain stays away...
    • I really don't think they would put Olivia Rodrigo on Occident stage. If it was her, they would put her in earlier Mordor slot and move Big Thief or Little Simz to Occident.   Fontaines DC are more probable, but don't really match the hype. However, again, if the hype was real, the artist would end up in Mordor.   That being said, I would love to see Fontaines DC tonight.
