Mardy, Eliminator is not really that representative of ZZ Top's output. Even though I do like Eliminator the follow up Afterburner was dull as ditchwater. The rest of their stuff is a much more low-key blues/boogie style. The recommendations of Tres Hombres and Dequello are far more in keeping with ZZ Top's output than Eliminator.

When some/a lot of the gig is made of up blues I like to see them being able to play it!

For example "Noel Gallagher plays the blues" wouldn't be something I'd be queuing up for.

As I said, it's the fact they remembered to write some tunes that makes them an attractive proposition to these ears.

We saw a bit of that John Fairhurst guy at last year's festival, but ended up wandering away because...er..he hadn't. See also Vintage Trouble.

See, I don't really clock to any noticeable deficiencies on the odd occasion when I slap Electric Warrior onto the spin-a-tron. So it's clearly not one of my key criteria.

Thats not how they see themselves though. Its not the reality either for that matter. Any of the vids I've seen or gig reviews I've read - including the video Tonyo posted earlier - show a fairly straight up blues rock band playing their songs. Theres no "now now just the fellas" Macca type shtick at all.

Never having indulged I make no judgment on the Top live experience.

Clearly at points in their history they've not been above a bit of razzmatazz, but it could be that the live show suffers from being too pared down and functional.

Exactly this. Scruffs is spot on here. I bought an old Russian pressing of T. rex the other week, and it's fucking irresistible. Even had this miserable old c**t bouncing round the kitchen with a massive grin on my face.

I think It's an old Melodia ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melodiya ) dodgy russian pressing, with Cyrillic script. Clearly not official. I'll pick you up one next time I'm in the record shop, they've got loads of them at a couple of quid a pop.

postponed a bunch of US tour dates up until May 7 because Dusty has fractured his shoulder. obviously still a while before Glastonbury but hopefully it doesn't get any worse and force them to cancel

I hope not too. Really looking forward to their set, one of my few excursions to the pyramid this year. A great back catalogue, recent album decent too and a pleasant addition to the musical styles on show at this year's festival. I'd be disappointed if they can't play.
