Had a couple of hours drive for work today and thought I`d give it a spin in the car. Bought it when it came out and listened to it a couple of times back then but for some reason it got lost in a box. Have heard them do some of the songs from it live a few times in the past couple of years;

Thought it sounded brilliant today ( twice ). Tim sounding really good and nice use of orchestra on a couple of tracks. Good pace to it and no songs seemed to be making up the numbers. I was driving along the ayrshire coastline so maybe I was just in a good place but for me, today, Hey Ma sounded like one of the greatest albums.

Big fan of Low over here

Easily the Bowie album I return to the most. The vocal tracks are effortlessly cool, and the instrumentals are the most interesting of any of that era.

None of those ghastly covers on it either

I'm always intruiged when anyone suggests "Low" (and indeed "Heroes") as their fave album of his. Neither have grabbed me like the other obvious ones.

ah, this is where you all start calling me a fucking philistine. He's really very good, isn't he. There's some amazing stuff on the greatest hits, but I don't really get him as an album artist. I like him, don't get me wrong, but he's not the sort of artist I could ever get obsessive about. Not now. Had I seen him in 1973 or something it might be different. As I came of age, he was at a particularly low point, and in my mind, that's tainted him for ever (for me). Same with Springsteen I think. None of these iconic artists had a good mid-late 80s. (see also the grateful Dead etc).

A traumatic experience at that vulnerable age can scar someone for life. That's right, I'm equating Tin Machine to Jimmy Saville

not just the 80s though. He was pretty much mocked throughout the 90s too.

Aladdin sane has always been my favourite, station to station as well. Love that Bowie era.

He was kind of off my radar really for much of my adolescence. Similar with lots of these 'iconic' acts. To be a teenager into vaguely alternative music in the mid-late 80s was to think these people were has-been fools. To want to blow away the old order and storm the gates with our heroes.
