Gazebos

I'm sure ther must be old Gazebo threads but for some reason I can't find them. Happy for a mod to merge my post with an old one.

I'm sad about the no Gazebos 'request'.. I used to love hanging under one with mates bimbling a few hours away.. plus the added bonus of rain protection and sun protection. I know they can be a piss take of space in some situations- but when they are basically a cover linking the entrances of a few tents with a wee space in the middle- why must they be regarded as a problem?

Personally I find (other people's) gazebos a good way of navigating back to my tent. As long as they're pitched unselfishly with tents underneath. Pitched in a way to make a massive space just for chairs and a BBQ, with loads of tape round the other hand, is just taking the piss.

We each use a small pop up tent and camp round a gazebo where we cook and hang out with a hangover etc.

This takes up much less space and is less obstructive than several larger tents and makes it easier for people to navigate through the campsite.

I do feel awkward outing myself as a gazebo user after the informal ban a couple of years ago. But used responsibly I think they work very well at Glastonbury.

I've always had one and as others have said I've had it over the sender entrance to the tents so as not to take the piss

If they are cracking down on it then I'll probably buy a canopy extension for my tent and use that instead

When we used to tent (we've now gone 'posh' up in the CV fields) we always took a gazebo but we had a pop up tent under it at night so it was genuine camping space. That seems a fair compromise.

gazebos arent allowed anymore?!

I thought someone said that last year - yet there will still loads

I see no problem with them, as long as it's not like every single person/couple of 2 has them..big groups it's different say 6-8 people having a gazebo..fine

as others say, find them useful to find my way back to my tent and a godsend when it rains!!

When you can't find a decent camping spot despite turning up early, it's annoying to see gazebos up taking up valuable camping space.

I reckon a more communal affair would be better - gazebos to be shared by all - with room for a bit of cooking (bring your own gas - clean up yer mess!) - and a bit of chitter chatter.

Theres always a gazebo "request" from GF. I've brought one every year for the last 3 years. A life saver. People weren't moaning about my gazebo when they were sheltering under it from the pissing rain on the Wednesday last year when everyone was setting up the tents.

Its open to anyone, all welcome. There are usually up to 10 of us, mostly sharing small tents so its a good place to get out and relax in the morning - away from the rain and/or sun.

Came back from the efests footie game a few years ago for a chill out and there were two Scottish lads sitting under the gazebo. Sat down and had a few beers with them.

The fuckers putting ropes and tape around "their" area. Now theres a shower of w*nkers.

The tent tapers seem to be on the increase each year. Two of my female friends were abused by people trying to save space for their mates last year near the park for having the temerity to put up a 3 man tent inside the lines they'd put up. They had to move it in the end just to shut them up. Interestingly I've never seen anyone on here own up to being a taper but then I suppose they wouldn't. Gazebos I don't have a problem with if they're used properly as others have described above. It's like anything at a festival, consideration for others should be the name of the game.

I don't usually have a problem with them. Last time however, we pitched our tent and I required sleep. So, unaware of anything occurring my boyfriend went for a wonder with his mate. He returned and we had a giant gazebo blocking the entrance to the tent. The guy wasn't that nice about moving it either - very rude man. I also assumed he would have a group of friends - he didn't. The gazebo was in the way the entire weekend and no one was using it!?

Like others - I don't mind them, if I'm camping in a group over 6 people, we would use it to join up tents and make sure others around us knew that they are free to us it if needed.

For our group of 20 odd we had one gazebo that we could all chill under with a small bonfire area outside. This uses less space than every single other tent of ours having a chillout zone in front of it!

Glasto has always been tight for space, though capacity has increased in the last couple of years. I despair at the people that turn up any point past midday Wednesday and have to pitch up outside the Long Drops... though it seems some folks actually try to get there early ever year too. Does the constant sound of door banging help them get off to sleep, or do they just like the smell of shit?

I'll admit it and with no shame. I'm a gazebo person and a taper.

But there has to be a context for both. The gazebo is central to an encampment of three of four tents and at night another tent goes under it for someone to sleep. That then gets packed away by day so it's not taking up any spare space.

We also tape over all of our guy ropes so they can be clearly seen and tape out a pathway into and round our encampment. That's not being territorial but helps people find a way either in or round our encampment so they don't trip over guy ropes at night.

We usually also mark the way in with little solar lights and have a flagpole with solar lights to help find our way back home at night. (Flags on a pole are great by day but not much use in the dark, wheras a pole with lights up it can be a great help.

We dont tape at all, the tents have luminous guy ropes, we dont extend them out for miles (A real pet hate) and we have some light up tent pegs

Last year woke up to find it raining stepped out of the tent to find a young couple sheltering under the gazebo as they had got caught out on their way back from the loos, got them some chairs out of the porch, stuck a brew on and the chap produced a J

What a pleasant start to the day :)

It's not that hard to find your tent without gazebos for reference. There are enough distinguishable signs, fire buckets, large tents and flags to traingulate your camp's location.

It's probably OK to have a gazebo in a large enough group and positioned correctly like UEF, i.e. not unnecessarily taking up loads of space on its own, but how do you decide what is appropriate?

Taping is selfish, unless for the reasons grumpyhack has stated, but I would say that 95% of people do it to mark out "their" territory and I have no issue cutting such tape to make the point.

Does the constant sound of door banging help them get off to sleep, or do they just like the smell of shit?
