i do agree in that books often secrete essential pieces of information, but this role will soon be undertaken by the internet. And with regards to the music industry.. that doesn't really show anything. People want physical stuff but not enough people want it - i'm sure you're aware that recently the biggest music store in the country has gone into administration. I'm talking about HMV of course. And this will, eventually, happen to books. Information can be gathered from the internet, stories and tales can be read on things such as kindles, listened to on audiobooks, etc. The literature industry will never bankrupt but the physical literature will soon be out of date.

Did anyone else see that My Bloody Valentine were announced for a festival in Germany 6h of september today?

Does that make them likely for R&L? Or am I missing another important piece of info like they are playing elsewhere?

I know that HMV went into administration, but that was as much to do with bad business management than the state of the CD industry. 70 million CDs were sold last year, and you're trying to tell me physical is dead? It's in a decline, but that's only natural since digital is a relatively new format, and is still on the rise. Only 30 million digital albums were sold. The gap will narrow, digital may take over but physical is not going away any time soon.

Just consider that there are billions of CDs, and millions of CD players across the world. Formats that widespread don't disappear, I give you vinyl, and the same goes to books, of which there may even be trillions. Physical literature and music will not disappear until our world is very very different to the one we live in now.

i didn't know that, so i'm inclined to agree with you on the music front. Although probably nearer 35 million digital albums were downloaded, what with piracy etc. Physical will stay around but the whole first world is being technologised (soon to become a word ) and that can only lead to rapid digital increase/physical decline. Considering music has only really started being downloaded digitally, i should think digital will have overtaken in 20-30 years as i said.

Vinyl has almost disappeared, as they have (fittingly) been overtaken by CDs, However maybe 20-30 years for the decline of books was a little (/very) rash, probably in nearer to 150 years ,the literature industry will be digitalised.

The key word is almost disappeared. The vinyl has actually grown an average of 60% every year for the past 7 years, and showing no sign of stopping. These things fluctuate, but unless something really dramatic happens formats don't really become obsolete

Physical literature has been around several thousand years, and the disposal of billions of books worldwide would be the most expensive, wasteful and useless thing humanity has ever done. Unless some weird shit like we never move and live totally virtual lives I'd predict books will be around as long as 1) Humans exist 2) It's still legal to cut down trees, and there are still trees to cut 3) We don't all live in gel incubators with VA machines. It's like saying we'll stop eating off plates, or living inside or something.

Haha damn you and your statistics I still don't think it's used much as a musical device, more for the coolness that accompanies a vinyl. The gramophone was eclipsed by the radio within a matter of months, as the first better alternative was offered/created. I'm sure some gramophones are still around today but there is no industry. Same with vinyls really. A very, very niche market. Maybe there has been a slight resurgence but I can't see it lasting particularly long.

Yes, it would be I love books, and have never bought a digital one. And yes, it has been quite a long time with books.. But humanity has never undergone anything like digitalisation before, and there has never before been an alternative to books, it's a very unpredictable situation.

Edit: Also, don't think it can be compared to eating off plates, or living inside of something. there is no alternative to them.

The vinyl industry is worth $120 at the moment, it's not comparable to the CD industry, but that's a sizeable chunk. About the gramophones, that's actually technology which developed into, you guessed it, the vinyl industry. Every single popular format of music production ever produced is still in use in some form, and the same goes with other industries. Film, still uses similar technology to its first invention, just refined, books still used after 5000 years, wars still use sharp objects and the concept of the gun hasn't really changed. It's just a faster bow and arrow. Buildings use the same materials, same laws of pysics, same box shape, need I go on?

My point isn't one about business, it's human nature. People HATE change, nothing ever really replaces anything, it just becomes more advanced. Talking about absolute replacement is ridiculous, especially something that's been so integral to human life for so long. Hell, 2.3 billion books are sold EVERY YEAR. I don't understand how you think that can be replaced. People vastly overestimate how far we're going to get in the future. Just look at 1984.
