You're right. Unfortunately that's the dominant force in the music industry at the moment. Whether it's The Wonderstuff, Take That or Bowie, the only thing making money for the record companies these days is nostalgia.

whilst i don't condone his long rants, anybody who goes to a Kanye show and is surprised when he starts ranting has obviously been under a rock up until that show. looking at his setlists, though, he isn't cutting any songs in favour of the rants - the rants are just spliced in between songs. i guess some people would find that irritating, but there's probably an equal amount that find it hilarious

I honestly had no idea he went on long rants at his shows until he was mentioned in this thread. I think "living under a rock" is a bit strong. Some people, like myself, choose to ignore T.V., Radio etc because of a difference in taste to popular culture.

From what I do know of Kanye, he's clearly a bell end. So I avoid information about him when I can.

I think he'd be a poor booking for the fest. I basically agree with Wooderson's long post a few pages back about glasto getting on the hip-hop train too late and only booking the modern shit. That being said, Wham! would be an even worse booking.

Just because something is popular, doesn't mean it is good, which is why record sales can't be used to quantify the "quality" of music.

E.g. Coke is not a good drink. It's a great product, but as a drink it doesn't quench thirst, it's bad for your teeth, gums, throat, stomach, blood vessels, liver, kidneys, heart, brain and skin, to name a few. Plus, no doubt the millions or billions (trillions?) of can's and bottles produced are clearly bad for the environment.

BUT EVERYONE LAPS IT UP BECAUSE EVERYONE ELSE IS DOING IT BECAUSE ADVERTS AND MARKETING GOT THIS GENERATIONS PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS HOOKED.

The same is true for McDonalds, cigarettes and (some, but not all) pop music. They are designed for the consumer to consume without thinking, benefiting a small, select population, whilst, directly or indirectly, having a negative effect on the consumer.

Nah, Chemical Brothers have done.

Edit: Ed just makes my life redundant.

I mean Ed who posted above me.

Not Ed from Chemical Brothers.

I'm not some angry jobless drummer who was promised a live gig with Chems and cancelled my holiday only to be let down.

Really.

sorry bout that. I'm not actually sure that there was anyone else though. Had a look down the headliners on Wiki and I think all the others probably did have a drummer. (so just to take you out of your redundancy), do you concur?

(fairly sure basement jaxx had a drummer live, as does Moby)

Wham won't headline.

I don't have anything in particular against pop, or nostalgia, it's just that (as I keep saying) nobody under 40 was ever round at the time to dislike them at the time and get nostalgic about now.

Basically they are irrelevant to most of the festival going public. If you had asked me this yesterday, i would have been surprised if they were considered big enough for sub-headliner.

Is this a George Michael gig then with the odd Wham tune? I like the odd George Michael tune. Great singer in fairness.

But theres no "fun" about Wham. Its tacky shit. Mindless tacky shit. Time is supposed to whittle away the shit. Not turn what is clearly shit into some sort of ironic nostalgia. If I want to listen to Wham and dance around like a lemon in a vacuum of culture I'll go to Benidorm.

Wham in the Glastonbury headliners thread. And the Cliff Richard thread was deleted.

For fucks sake.

    • Going with Oxfam.  Just booked my ferry today.  Looking forward!
    • The Radio Dept.?! That's a surprise to me, they haven't toured in like 8 years. Hopefully they will announce some more shows.
    • I was assuming September in Stirling might have a different issue tbf in the form of it just pissing it down.
    • Yeah so many of mine seem to be just France v Spain in one semi and England/Brazil v Argentina in the other. But the fact those combos are the obvious ones mean it feels unlikely that'll happen because in World Cup history, you very rarely end up with what pre-tournament looks like the obvious final 4. We all see teams outperform and underperform. Which one is the fall guy is a different matter.   I've said elsewhere that for me, there's a hierarchy of Spain, France and Argentina as the 3 strongest looking, then England and Portugal, then Brazil and Germany, but that overall, they'd be the 7 likeliest to win. So I dunno, maybe this will be the time the Netherlands avenge the failure of total football in 1974 and achieve what they couldn't achieve through whatever the f**k Nigel de Jong was with his 2010 final karate moves.
