Gazebos......

Yay or nay??? No lectures just answers, 6 of us 3 tents, does it make me a bad person if i take 1, position it over the tents to give us some shelter from the erm sun!?? Are they allowed/frowned upon or not? seems to be a fair few looking back at the last 2 years of photos. Cheers

I'm taking 1 but we do have over 25 people camping together. The last two years i've been asked to take it down but they usually allow you to put it back up again once the site is pretty much full

Ive always taken at least one..Two last year and i think alot at CT were happy i did..good for r##n even beter for shade! Ive dumped the two and bought a double popup this year...hope i get to my spot befre its full

What not to bring

Please do not bring gazebos - they take up valuable tent space in the campsites (and there are so many more exciting places to have a sit down with your friends). Plus, an awful lot of them get left behind. We'd also rather you didn't put tape around your enclosure of tents,

I'm taking one for a group of about 12 of us but it was free so if the weather ain't great then we won't be bothered about putting it up.

Don't see the issue with them and if it's raining or super hot then we'd be more than happy to share it with neighbours for shelter/shade.

Gazebos are great, nice to have a little bit of space in front of your tent to chill and chat with a fire.

I understand that many dont like them as they use up valuable space, but is this not an organisational problem where they try to squeeze in so many punters in to earn more cash?

I think if there are a few of you in a group they are fine....if there are just 2 of you then nay.

I think there is enough room, just dont take the piss and take over loads of space.

This old chestnut perhaps deserves to be in questions but my view-

Groups of campers with 3 or more tents (ie 5-6 people) I don't see an issue in using one to interlink the tents in a sort of communal area. 2 man tent+ gazebo, not only waste of space, but probably annoys your neigbours so get to know them and ask first. Worst comes to worst you get told to pull it down to make space for others

Last year was the first time I brought one ( we were a group with 4 tents so placed it in the middle as a communal space for all of us ). Knowing the weather was going to be very hot and that one should stay out of the ( midday ) sun ( cancer risk ) as well as being menopausal ( oh the flushes ) being able to get some shade when needed was a godsend. Don't think I will this year - won't be as hot and the flushes have diminished

We will have about 10 tents with one or two gazebos. The tents will actually poke under the gazebos, and the tents are all appropriately sized for the number of occupants. This is an old chestnut I know, and I have read The Fine Guide, etc., but I think that at least as big an issue is huge tents with just one or two occupants. Much less easy to point fingers at, but at least as big a waste of space, probably more so. Also gazebos are no worse than some of the huge tarpaulins that are used to create communal areas.

So you are only allowed to have outside space if you have come with a group of friends? Couples and pairs of friends are not allowed shade, and if it is rainy they must stay in their little tent? I know people say that anyone is welcome to share it but it isn't really the same.

Just playing devil's advocate really. We are lucky enough to be 3 of us in a 5 man tent with a decent area for us to sit in rain or shine, but the "It's OK to have a gazebo if there's half a dozen of you, but woe betide any pairs" theory baffles me a little. If there is 6 of you, you can justify a spacious tent. It is the pairs that get stuck in a confined space if the weather goes to either extreme.

Gazebos should be either OK or not. I feel like the rules have become that they are OK for cool people with lots of friends.

10 of us, one pregnant, and one gazebo between us, as usual. And as usual, neighbours welcome. We've a small quantity of smallish tents so not taking up much room in that regard.

The only year we ever took one was 2005 and what a help it was! Not just to us but to others whose tents had been flooded!

I think aslong as they dont take up anyone elses space and you dont mind sharing it with your neighbours, theyre not a bad thing

For those who don't have a large tent with a covered inside area, it can be very awkward without a gazebo if it's raining, or very hot and sunny. In the mornings I like to sit around for a bit near the tent, sometimes during the day as well for a bit of a rest.

The fine guide says there are lots of more interesting places to sit around - true, but I don't feel like trooping round the site as soon as i've got up! Plus it's nice to have a quieter sit-down under some shelter at the tent.

2009.......arrived during the thunder storm Thursday night & couldn't find any space for our two pitch & go tents. Drenched & totally p1$$ed off we threw the tents up under a gazebo in south park after walking all the way across site from Gate A. Got some funny looks Friday morning but no arguments and when we returned after Neil Young the gazebo had disappeared!

Although I bet having the Gazebo already in place did help you keep your tent dry whilst putting it up? I Arrived at the Roskilde Festival in 2007 during a big 48hr rain storm and had to put the tent up - so we used someones Gazebo to help keep ours dry!

i've never come across anyone who's been opposed to a gazebo being put up in the 4 years i've been to glasto, to be honest.

this is the first year we've taken one and it will be well used, and not just sit there unattended for 5 days.

surely, each group of people are expected to have some kind of communal area, whether a group of 2 or 22?!?!

for me, it's the communal feel of those camped around you that are the icing on the cake of the whole festival

At the end of the day, when looking at last years weather, if a gazebo means less people affected by sun stroke and people staying safe in the sun then why the hell not. I never take one but I'm not gonna trample on others for taking one. HOWEVER, do not take the piss. If there is less than 5 or 6 of you then dont bother. If you're in a big group then go for it. Just dont take the piss, as I said. It wont go down well!
