Does anyone else wish Elbow would grow a pair and throw some meat behind their tunes? Its all very non offensive and nice. When I first heard Leaders of the Free World I thought they were stepping it up a gear. But they’ve gone the opposite way. Weak, weak music. Ive no interest in standing in a field with 70,000 other people gently moving my head and shoulders from side to side to weak as piss music.

Get a f**king bass player with a cock and a bigger bass drum lads will you?!

I understand. Thing is, I really want to like them, but they just get over the finishing line for me. Doesn’t even make me tap my foot. And I like softer music too but Elbow doesn’t wash over me either. Theyre kind of in no mans land.

Listened to the new album quite a bit now. It begins and ends well, but the middle section is really nowhere near their usual standard. Lyrically, I would say this album is quite poor also (bar a few exceptions). Open Arms is the low point.

A shame.

Looks like their 2008 gig will be their peak.

You're right, I dont know, but there is nothing like the buzz surrounding their new album that surrounded seldom seen kid and I think when they play their new songs it will kill the atmosphere a bit. I hope I'm wrong.

2008 was amazing from beginning to end, I think this year there will be some lulls. And they will inevitably play less older stuff than they did in 2008.

I still think this year will be very good, but I bet it doesnt match or exceed 2008.

Just my opinion of course.

Listened to the album a few times now and like it a lot. Agree with The Nal in some ways that I'd like them to do a few more "rockish" tunes as they're so sodding good at it when they do, but i'm more than happy to sway away to the on the Pyramid. Will definitely end up crying at some point, but that's a good thing. Not many bands are capable of making me feel emotional, but their music touches me. Yes it's a bit wussy of me but I don't care

Not sure about that SSK got generally good reviews (as this album has) but took a while to take off with mainstream success. They toured the UK with it twice, and were still playing festivals 18 months after its release, so they really put themselves out there with it.

This album has been out 4 days, I hope for them it will do well, and it deserves to. As for glastonbury and their gig this month, it will be epic and I can't wait.

I'm still waiting for my vinyl copy. Universal sent me a download link but dont want to put it onto my MP3 player until i have put the stylus on the songs first (and poring over the cover art!!).

Got to know the new album now and IMO it's not as good as their other stuff. Seems to lack the subtlety, craft, depth and guile that I know and love them for.

All of their other albums have some songs that set my spine tingling on first listen and still do (e.g. Forget Myself) and others that do the same after 10/20 listens (e.g. Tower Crane Driver). This one, whilst having some decent simple songs, lacks either (so far).

Hope that the live show on Saturday doesn't disappoint.

Seen them on the 1st date of the new tour tonight in Glasgow.

Amazing gig, the new songs sound great live (only listened to the album once too) and the stage set up is perfect. Best sound I've heard in the SECC too (it's famous for having shit acoustics)

Played for just over 2 hours too :)

This!!

It's really sad. Red, Newborn, Falling Angel, Ribcage, Switching Off - all classics to me, can't believe they're leaving their past behind.

Don't understand their reluctance to play Forget Myself as well, it was missing from their set last time round.
