The 1975

The 1975 are a divisive band. Have been since 2013, and the detractors have only got more entrenched in their hatred since. But try and tell me that wasn't a step up from the run of the mill sets bands like Arctic Monkeys have served up post pandemic. At least 1975 clearly view Glastonbury as a pinnacle. And I'm an AM fan so this is not just a case of my own musical preferences.

Both sh*t bands tbh

Im completely ambivalent about the 1975. But ‘better than Arctic Monkeys in 2023’ is not a bar to set anyone. That means very little.

1975 actually sounded great. Problem was he lost us when he mentioned he was the greatest songwriter of his generation. Big moan from the sparse

crowd where I was.

positive though the urinals were easy to get into 😂

That was a joke

Watched the full thing last night trying to sober up and honestly thought it was pretty good overall. The guys clearly understood the weight of the event and pulled out a lot of stops to make it THE 1975 show plus the setlist was pretty great (shame they missed out the likes of TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME, The City and Looking for Somebody To Love). But weirdly I did think there was something missing, maybe it was me being quite drunk but I’ll definitely have to rewatch. Still enjoyed myself overall.

The BBC called it "safe". Not sure what they were expecting. I did think it might be less schtick-heavy in the first third and play out like the 2022 R+L show.

I was just using AM as an exampl here because it's the most familiar to me as a fan, plenty of other examples to chose from.

I mean he literally set it up as a joke beforehand and then directly said it was a joke afterwards, so if you took that as a serious statement then sort of on you.

Not to be all fanboy-ish and blinding defending Healy but does seem that often people are looking for reasons to pick at him/the band in a way they wouldn't for other artists.

and really there's no need, even as a huge fan, I'll admit he says more then enough tripe for people not to need to invent stuff to get annoyed at.

I guess Loyle Carner probably got quite a decent turn out

Friend put a photo in the WhatsApp chat shortly before he came out and the crowd barely reached the sound desk. So people must have either been late or mostly elsewhere.

Who was the one that said it was gonna be rammed For them? I think se corner had more people. Cause the queue for nyc downlow was a mile long at 10pm

Anybody who thought it would be rammed was deluded. They're way too divisive a band for that. Not a band that many people are going to tag along to out of curiosity or just to see the headliner that night. You either know you like them or generally want to avoid them, and like to shout about that fact.

Someone called it the Matt Healy show, with the 1975 in support which was accurate. Very reminiscent of Arctic Monkeys about 10 years ago where Alex turner just strutted about preening himself.

His fans are calling it ironic/ joking, which I’m sure is great if you’re a massive fan but to Joe Public he looked like a bellend, not surprised people made the move to SE corner early.

I think the issue with you and many others is that you already have pre-existing hatred towards him and everything he does (even when it’s meant to be funny) pisses you off. If you don’t like them fine but maybe take a step back when it comes to this part of it and realise it’s really not that deep. I went with people who aren’t massive fans and they laughed so that’s debunked your theory a bit.

I thought they were absolutely brilliant btw and I’m not a mega fan.

    • Wednesday is a nice addition imo
    • Kronenberg in a tent as well IIRC but Brooklyn Pilsner was easier to get without queueing and was everywhere across the festival.
    • I think they'll end up doing something due to pressure and bad PR. Maybe they do a discount code for next year or bar credit or something along those lines.    I agree though. I acknowledge that the lineup is huge but surely you can't cancel 33% of the headliners and not reimburse in some way. Their insurance will probably cover their fees for MA, Doja, Bad Gyal and Mac DeMarco due to force majeure.
    • Looks like nothing for weekend ticket holders. You'd expect a goodwill gesture.
    • Enough has been covered about how much of a sh*t show that was, so I'll just say, Massive Attack and it's relationship with this festival (and potentially me) are f**king cursed.    They were announced in 2020 when I first got excited about seeing them. They were subsequently on the poster for 21, 22 and now 26. This time I was in actually in the crowd close to the stage waiting for them twice haha. I give up!
