This is it. Whether the Conservatives and their traditional voters care to admit it or not, it seems that most of the far right are now voting Tory rather than for the less socially acceptable parties they previously voted for. Either they’ve all seen the error of their racist ways and have moved toward the centre, or they now believe that the Tories have moved far enough right to best represent their racist values.

Tories do seem to get very upset and defensive when this is pointed out. “It’s not our fault the far right feel at home voting Tory” etc.

I’m going to take no pleasure AT ALL in pointing this out to Tory voting friends and family who take pride in being decent people.

I'd have gone for Bridget Phillipson as the shadow chancellor... mind you her majority has been absolutely cratered by the Tories and her seat looks very vulnerable now. Would be a potential Ed Balls moment.

Getting Rayner in a more publicly visible role seems a smart move to me. Reeves disliked by the JC wing for obvious and fair reasons but been quite impressed with her from a policy pov.

Corbyn lost 18 councillors and won both byelections in his first year locals.

Starmer lost 326 councillors and Hartlepool.

That was against the hopeless David Cameron in the dying days of his time in office, not the popular Boris Johnson riding off the back of an excellent pandemic performance.
