Apparently crow like masks were worn by doctors during the plague - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plague_doctor_costume  so Arthur was perhaps making a point about current plague times. 

Another interesting fact unearthed in a goggle search is that "nabo", Spanish for “turnip,” is a common euphemism for penis.
