Yeah I’m certainly not saying you’d like one mate don’t worry.

I just personally don’t see a curfew working as well as people might think especially with what you’ve mentioned in regards to lockdown fatigue.

Although numbers are high and likely to get much worse I’m not sure the compliance is there anymore.

We’re nearly a year in to restrictions!

It would certainly be the last tool they could / would use .... anyway Oxford is here , nearly so lets celebrate that 🙂

It’ll be monday I think for Oxford. All the other news has come on Mondays has it not

Won’t be Monday 28th as that’s a bank holiday. Won’t be ready for this Monday. The vaccine efficacy data dropping on Mondays was pure coincidence.

“Within days of Christmas” suggests to me it’ll be 29th-31st Dec

I knew I had heard Hancock say something about this in the HoC yesterday, when he said the other day about the mass vaccination centres not opening for a few weeks until AZ had been rolled out. Would tie in with opening them up second or third week of January.

they are all over Europe now and its a tool that hasn't been used here as yet .... Ive no need to be going out ... its dark and horrible outside  , where are you ? and does it seem to be bringing infection levels down ?

In Spain. Really no idea if it works but they seem to be sticking with it.

But yeah, I'd hate it in the Summer but in the depths of Winter, it's alright.

"An emergency toughening of Covid restrictions could be announced as soon as Saturday after Boris Johnson was handed alarming new evidence of the virulence of a mutant strain of the virus. The Prime Minister called an unscheduled meeting of senior ministers on Friday night to discuss how to contain the new variant , which has so far been largely confined to London and the South East.

Travel restrictions are among the measures under discussion, with one source suggesting the Government could even restrict travel between the South East and other parts of the country. An alternative would be to ban commuters from travelling into London, after the mutant strain, which originated in Kent, spread rapidly to London and then the home counties.

Much of the South East was put into Tier 3 by the Government only on Thursday, but the new information about the transmissibility of the mutant strain was so worrying that ministers fear they may have to act immediately. Government scientists at the Porton Down laboratory in Wiltshire have been conducting experiments on the new strain, and have confirmed ministers' fears about it being far more infectious than the original strain of the virus.

One source in the scientific community said there were "concerns in government" about the new strain after the evidence was presented to ministers on Friday afternoon. "The evidence that the new strain of the virus more easily transmits from one person to another has hardened up," said the source. The meeting of ministers was expected to continue late into the night, with Whitehall sources refusing to rule out a press conference on Saturday to announce additional restrictions.

Mr Johnson has been adamant that he will not change the law allowing up to three households to get together over Christmas, but has already advised families to keep their "bubbles" as small as possible."

I’ve seen evidence suggesting R in London is 1.75. That makes zero sense given the amount of distancing going on.

The ONLY plausible explanation is the new strain is MUCH more contagious (R0 of 5-6)

This is really bad.

Have you been on a tube in London or Oxford Street? Not so much distancing...

One early theory was that it would eventually become more infectious but less deadly. That's.... not a bad thing.

Or it might be that people actually are being a bit reckless and ignoring distancing guidance:

Saw some other different footage on the news tonight as well of central London somewhere which was scarcely believable.

Or the seasonal factors make it more contagious. The new strain is supposed to be mainly in the SE, yet the lockdown has lost its power in the NW.  Could it just be the weather?

This was always going to happen in the winter, there were warnings given to the government which they haven’t heeded.

    • well, we might know by the end of next month if they drop the lineup early again
    • I'm definitely not camping 🙂.  My 17 year old Daughter and her friends are there 3 days and commuting back to Sheffield each day as didn't want to camp .  I am taking and picking up the Saturday so thought I may as well get a ticket as love Fontaines DC - need to do a lot of research on the other acts though to fill my day.    I walked through the camp site other year the day Arctic Monkeys played and it was like a War Zone.  My Son has camped a couple of times but didn't fancy my Daughter staying over.
    • Not at all impressed with Polanski saying "noone should be barred from public life" wrt the Tory neo-nazi. I really don't think "no nazis in politics" should be an excessive standard.
    • Dug into Milkweed some more and this was a brilliant suggestion. Thank you 🙂   This will come as no surprise, but I have been told that there are some band substitutions to come.
    • Yeah, I think it's important to differentiate between a stage that's just a platform for the artist to walk on (which can be assembled fairly quickly and without too much difficulty), and the custom staging that you get in big productions where there's a whole world underneath.   Using the Eras tour as an example the stage extending out into the stadium field has all sorts - lifts that go up or down - down most importantly as this allows performers to enter or to leave the stage as needed. There's passageways to get from one part of the stage to another. There's what are effectively dressing rooms set aside for costume changes. There's spare instruments (and techs to look after them) so if something goes wrong above they can be swapped out in the space of seconds. There's even a track and dolly system running the full length of the stage so that Taylor can be moved from one end to the other faster than she'd be able to walk.   I don't know the specifics of the Madonna tour to the same degree but my understanding is that a lot of the same techniques are used.
