Fallow year impact on line up

Just had a random thought. How does a fallow year affect the line-up (if at all) in the year before or the year after? Do bands think "shit! better play this year" driving up quality of bookings?

I've no clue personally, the possibility just popped into my head. Does anybody have observations from past experience?

The vast majority of bands play as part of a wider tour, so it'll simply mean that any bands that release music and tour off the back of it won't be able to play the festival for a while, maybe until their subsequent release and tour.

That said maybe bands will alter their touring plans to accommodate a 2019 slot? Who knows I'm just babbling.

I  could see Metallica coming back in 2019.

They have just announced their first dates of the Hard Wired tour for later this year and that tour could last 3 years.

The band have said they will  no longer tour for long periods (two weeks on the road and then two weeks back at home now for personal and health reasons )  so it is doubtful they will have got everywhere before that.

Christ, imagine the impact that'll have on the North American bear population.

^^ This.

Fallow year will have limited impact on the line-up. As ever, Glastonbury will only be able to book bands that are touring in 2019. There is this myth that Glastonbury can get who they want; they are picking from the same pool as every other festival although are more of a draw for some bands than other festivals.

I think people would be surprised that for quite a lot of bands (particularly non UK), Glastonbury is just another festival on the summer festival circuit.

I seem to think that for Muse and Coldplay , Glastonbury is always on their circuit

I can't. It took them years to finally be booked despite having headlined every other festival across the world several times over so I don't see why they'd book em twice in the space of 5 years, and to be fair, they seemed like a bit of a novelty headliner in regards to Glastonbury despite me and loads of others enjoying it immensely. Metallica have been ticked off - I'm sure there are tons of other acts they'd like to tick off as well

They have said they would like another appearance and if they ask to play the Other Stage I don't  see Glasto turning them  down.

I believe there have been stories of numerous big/headliner sized acts vocalising the fact that they'd play a lower slot at Glastonbury just to get on the bill and it not happening for one reason or another. Although there were rumours that Metallica were originally gonna play on Other, I'm fairly certain that wasn't the case. Until one headliner sized act does play lower down (and it isn't a secret set) then i just can't see it logistically happening. There are rumours of something similar happening almost every year and not once has it actually happened

We need Neil on this one .  I am sure Metallica were originally down for Other Stage , but I could be wrong

I think I know what Neil will say - Metallica playing Other was definitely on the cards that year and was likely to happen if Prince had headlined.

I thought that.  I would have preferred Metallica to play Other Stage , in fact I would prefer to see most bands there , never really been a fan of the Pyramid Stage.

Sunset slot at the Other is one of the best places to be on site, I reckon.  When the sun is going down over your left shoulder, casting a lovely red glow over the place, combined with usually reliable bookings for the stage (for my taste) and friendlier crowds than you find up the road it's very often my choice of venue that time of night.  Some of my favourite gigs at Glastonbury have been sub headliner on Other (Gomez, Foals, Smashing Pumpkins all stand out off the top of my head) and as others have mentioned there have been a good number of great headliners there over the years (although neither listed the mighty sets from QOTSA and NIN, so I'll pipe up with those to add to the list).

    • My understanding is that the queues returning back to the UK will be much worse (up to two hours) but the queue entering Lisbon isn’t so bad. That’s just from reading a few forum posts about it though so take it with a pinch of salt!

    • World Cup 2026: What is happening with ticket prices? - BBC Sport   Sounds like Infantino has been learning from his buddy if he's running around claiming its all sold out while quietly dumping tickets below face on assorted secondary websites.
    • Mac DeMarco also cancelled
    • I'm British so it very much would apply for me.   I mean, it's a moot point as I don't have tickets so will not be in town for this, but I've heard reports of lengthy queues and given I remember Lisbon Airport having a long queue at arrivals even pre-EES when I went in 2023, I seem to guess it might be quite the wait, depending on flight paths.   Certainly, the worst I've had pre-EES was a 45 minute wait for a stamp at Valencia Airport in Spain, where 4 flights to non-EU destinations in quick succession were placed one after the other. So I can't say I'm enthusiastic about what's in store. Or you know. Maybe I'm just overthinking it.
