Camping In Pennard Hill?

We do this too- the watching the walking wounded. I find some folk get quite unnerved when you say a cheerful "hello" at them!!

I like the idea of position your tent to face the path, never occurred to me before. I've camped right by a path before on Row Mead (literally wedged the tent into the tiniest of gaps), but pointed in towards the site.

Do you reckon being by a path facing outwards makes you more or less likely to be robbed? On the one hand, easy access, on the other, people constantly walking past.

i have worried about this, but i tend not to leave anything at the campsite that can't be replaced at the shop. I also try to leave my tent looking like it has been robbed. this is not very hard to do

 

our camp seems to be very inviting that way with the fire , we get so many randoms it's such a laugh

Just don't take anything you won't mind losing. And keep all your valuables (phone, wallet etc) on you at all times, and down your sleeping bag/under your mattress at night.

I do that too! - I always leave my tent looking like someone else has already robbed it. Explode the contents of your rucksack all over your tent as soon as you arrive and leave it like that for the whole festival.  Best piece of advice I was given at my first festival and i've stuck with it.

I try to do this but the messiness always gets to me! End up having a sneaky little tidy. Doesn't stay that way for long though, always wake up with everything in my tent all over the shop.

Question for you lot re campsites.  I am a a middle aged woman camping on her own but my daughter will be working at Glasto so will be able to put my tent up for me (presumably wherever she likes).  I am neither a party animal not a party pooper and expect really to only be going to my tent to sleep - though not averse of course to getting in chats, drinks etc with neighbours if they're friendly.  The only time I've been before, we camped near the John Peel stage which was fine.

So would you suggest anywhere in particular.  I don't think there is any one area I expect to spend my time - last time I went pretty much everywhere so I don't really know where to aim for.

Or should I pitch with the other solos on here and lose the advantage of being able to pick anywhere and be a bit far out?  I guess if I'm only walking it twice a day it doesn't really matter.

That's a hard one! Having camped in various fields, if there's no one place you're going to be that often then just about anywhere would suit you.  I've got good things to say about everywhere we've camped

Yeah it is a tough one. I've been to Glastonbury a handful of times, and have camped by the Pyramid stage, the old JP stage, and Pennards a couple of times. My favourite is by the Pyramid stage for a few reasons:

1) The glowing tip of the stage at night makes it easier for me to find my way home in various states of inebriation.

2) The flushing toilets up the hill are a nice little bonus, and very pleasant for the morning's business.

3) I really enjoy waking up in the mornings and hearing all the activity happening on the stage as they prepare for the day - sound checks, mainly! Gives me a little buzz.

4) And if the weather is truly shite and I need a timeout in the camping area, I can still hear whoever is playing on the stage.

I'm sure the same could be said for areas, I'm just not familiar enough with them.

Pennards was fun, nice and close to the stone circle for the evenings if that's your thing, and the Park too. Just slightly too hectic for me.

Pennards would be my campsite of choice but coming in the coach through pgA rules it out, that's too much of a hike with all my stuff, thought about dropping stuff off at a lock up and going back, but for what it's worth il stick to one near pgA

Thanks.  Yeah I think the one place I've probably thought isn't for me is Pennards - I think it might be a bit lively for me.  When you say you camped at Pyramid, was that Row Mead, Kidney Mead or Big Ground?  I think I'm tending towards one of these - especially as they're near the staff camping so will be convenient to meet up with my daughter - I think Kidney Mead will be closest for that.

I've camped in Pennards pretty much every year I've gone. Really like it (but then I'm not one for sleep) so works for me.

last year was the best it's been since 2009 for me, they introduced these new communal camp fires around the field which were fantastic (maybe it was the same in every campsite?) but I think it was run by the young Green Party. Brilliant way to spread some messaging and seemed to work as everyone was a lot friendlier and took care of their campsite!

The first year I went I managed to wedge myself into Row Mead as it was one tent shared between two people. Last year we camped in Big Ground which was a bit more spacious and we just about squeezed 5 tents in about halfway up the hill. Loved it!

I think any of the pyramid areas would work though, just depends where there is space.

As I say, my daughter can put my tent up on the Tuesday (I think) so space shouldn't be a problem.  But thanks, I think I'll go for one of those.

I've always camped in Pennards and it would feel weird to be somewhere else. Love the location, the great views and the constant sound of bass pumping out from the Glade, don't think it's worth the queuing but it's the place for me.  See you lovely people there.

First time newbie here- your wisdom is appreciated! 

 

Im going to be arriving by coach from Sheffield somewhere between 1-4 on the Wednesday. In total there will be 10 of us spread over 6 tents. Where would you suggest camping. We want somewhere that's not a million miles from everything but will have enough space so that we aren't struggling to find space on the Wednesday.

 

by sounds of it pennards would be great but there won't be space by the time we arrive

I spent a lot of mental energy and time planning on where I was going to camp last year and on arrival just ended up pitching in the first large available patch of ground I could find almost literally a mile away from where I intended to camp. Had a great time. Was normally out of the tent by 9am and then back in it around 2-2.30am.

If by some miracle I get my hands on a ticket, I'm going to do this - will be good to try something new rather than sticking with what's familiar. It's a bit like ordering a takeaway - the temptation is always there to try a new dish, but the worry creeps in that I might regret it. However I feel this can't be the case at Glasto, as every inch of it is brilliant.

Camped in Pennards 94, 95, 97, 99 and 2000 had a blast each year... in the early years we would get there Wednesday morning and have the whole field to ourselves, once even asked a telehandler to deliver a massive bale of firewood to where we were camped and he did..

I've camped in Pennards a few times and find it overrated if I'm being honest. Find it too cramped and noisy for my delicate sensibilities.  Especially now Arcadia has moved next door. I still camp on that side of the festival but prefer Park or Dairy Grounds.

One thing to consider, if arriving by coach, is that the coaches arrive at Gate A - so Pennards is a heck of a trek with all your stuff when you arrive and - trust me - twice as far when you come to leave. I'd consider somewhere nearer Gate A for that reason alone.
