Getting into the correct gate

Always drove down from the north before, down the M5 and ended up at Gate D (west) 3 times and Gate C (east) once, although entering from any particular side was never planned.

This year we're coming from London and want to enter from the west, how do we make sure we manage this without accidentally getting diverted into the east carparks? All the way down the M4 to Bristol and then down the M5?

I too would like an answer to this. When you get to either it's just signposted "car park" and after queueing in traffic for hours it would take a strong will indeed to drive past looking for another entrance.

I can't help you, but I will be interested to see what people suggest!

I posted a question yesterday asking the exact opposite. We want to end up in east, coming from Yorkshire and I wanted to check if we will definitely still get to east if we come down the A37 from Bristol.

(consensus seems to be that we will be ok,)

To hit the west car parks you need to enter from the west so your plans to head in via m5 and Bristol would work. If you don't want such a diversion you can bomerang past the site via a37 and head back in on the A361.

M4>M5 to Jct 23> A39> towards Glastonbury town then A361.

Or

M3>A303 to Podimore roundabout, (ignore festival signs) take the 3rd exit (towards Somerton), 2nd right (again signposted to Sommerton), follow B3151 towards Street, right at the roundabout (A39 towards Glastonbury town) then A361

Directions in text always confuse me so hopefully this is clear enough

Red line is where we'd naturally be coming from so obviously no.

Green line is definitely ok but will take ages.

Blue line is what I would hoping would work, but I take it this won't?

Black line could work, or do you automatically get diverted once you get to the A37?

Yellow line seems to be what people are saying? Avoiding the A37 altogether?

Edit: Actually I think I misread. Black line should be ok?

Coming from the East i always ended up at Gate C (my preference for years). Ended up at B the last two times, through a mix of ignorance and blind eagerness and desperation to just 'get there'.

Someone on here said follow the blue route for Gate C.

Once i've confirmed that...that's where i'm headed / the plan.

No idea if UEF wants to try this to avoid the queuing debacle of last year...that i seemed to avoid despite only seeming to be 1 hour ahead of him in the queue.

Black route would be my choice. Came from the SW last year via Somerton and into Glastonbury town before heading to West carparks. Barely any traffic on the road highlighted in black between A303 and Glastonbury town too

Don't take the M4. What the chap said about the red route via wells isnt a bad idea. Generally I advise people avoid that route because the traffic can get very bad when you get to Shepton Mallet, but I'm not sure its so bad these days now so many people travel in Tuesday night. But don't try to go from wells direct to the festival, there is a road but I gather it was closed last year. But its easy to get to Glastonbury town via wells.

I'm staying in Warminster the night before but want to get to West, was thinking about the Shepton Mallett/Wells/Glastonbury Town route, but may do the Black line one, Google Maps says it's roughly the same time (about 20 minutes more than going direct), but I have no idea which one is likely to get clogged up more with traffic.

Black line will probably be better as the other way you'll hit traffic at Shepton Mallet and then the Glastonbury town traffic as well. But you'll get stuck when you come out around Glastonbury either way. As said before, the best route is the one I outlined above via the small roads through Ditcheat and West Bradley to West Pennard.

Last year I came along the M4, then took the A350 all the way to the A303. Then up the A37 and then through a load of lanes (I ended up going past the entrance to Worthy View) to get to the A361 heading to the west side of the festival. It was no where near as bad as that sounds, though this was about 7 or 8pm on the Wednesday so there wasn't much traffic at all.

You could go M3 -> A303, though I have a love / hate relationship with the A303 so I try to avoid using it if possible.

I heard last year you can't go via North Wootton now whilst the festival is entering/exiting. However, I didn't try it myself. Glasto-worker posted a list of road closures somewhere.

I gather the route to West Pennard is not blocked (but the road closures to change) But any way over Pennard Hill via Pylle or Sticklynch is.

Im coming from Hull and last year wanted to come in at gate D, which is the opposite side of the site to the one we'd usually come into. The two previous years we'd come in at gate C and had to carry our stuff across the full site, including 2011 when I had my kids with me, 2 and 4 at the time. I said Id never come in at Gate C ever again.

I just put the in the sat nav postcode for coming from Wales off the official glasto website, we ended up going down some very narrow country lanes and back roads but we ended up at Gate D.

    • Another note, if I didn't mention the food in the arena for main stage is right at the back. Bands wise they do very well for but as a festival so far they pros are outweighed quite heavily currently for me.
    • On another note for RIP as an event, there is some good things but there are so many things people going to UK festivals would hate and how far behind they are.  Consistent network and water, beer and pretzel like food is brought around to buy in the crowds. Topping up on the wristband is good. The camping and food arrangement is not good, you really need cooking kit. Water points inside the arena are bonkers, water points in camping are a faff unless you are close enough in general camp. Merch stands are crazy. You MASSIVELY need to think about your lidl shop for camping and try and do it so you've one stop. It's definitely worth it getting to a camping shop here, picking up a rolley between your mates and stacking it for the walk back....lidl is cheap though, not hard getting in but Thursday queues getting in and into the camping is mad. You have to register first for a wristband as well leaving any bigger bags behind so pull to a side if only two and do it separately. I was joining a WhatsApp group for solo camp so went with the flow but I've learnt. Had it been me or just two my tent would have been down much quicker.  Big final note, I got a fresh and black 3 man from decathlon before coming and put in bigger suitcase with my airbed and sleeping bag...do this. Take a smaller option for your clothes. If you go to Munich first, book your train to Nuremberg as far in advance as you can....very important!....it hikes crazy. Probably bettee overall for baggage sizes to do BA both ways but you do then need to go back to Munich after too. Use the B&B hotel hbf the night before....its very nice, comfortable, cheap and within 10 minutes of the station which also serves as a transport stop 15 minutes from the registration.  Get up literally like 5am with everything back the night before, shower and go. Transport is free anyway for festival ticket holders during the duration.  Would I just choose to travel in each day and back to a hotel?, on the basis of sleep and getting accommodation cheap enough for 3 nights i might just do especially if I picked the ticket up early enough. It doesn't feel like a festival in a normal sense....unless you are in general yoi have to exit on the paths outside the camping to walk down and in which also applies for getting water so have a stock up. Toilets are in the camping.
    • Yup and they aren't cheap   Glastonbury is different though, it's a place that will pack out for rarities they don't usually see. Download strictly speaking shouldn't be the strangest place for Avril to pop up of she had been a touring artist of longer times over the years.   Avril and GC would get the same billing for me and GC are selling arenas out quicker than Avril sold Ally Pally. Bearing in mind she'd pnly done soem Brixton dates before.
    • Avril gets above GC on rarity (see Cypress Hill this year). She drew in something like 70,000 at Glastonbury, so much so that they had to close the field off. I’d wager that she would get the biggest crowd of the entire weekend if she was to play DL.
