A new Prince thread!

before this turns into a transport farce, can i just add a cynical wondering? for years prince has scoffed at glasto 'using his name to sell tickets'. is he now doing the same in order to drum up interest in the shows? surely a flat 'no' would ensure more people go to his gigs, knowing there won't be a televised glasto performance the next month. so why fanny around unless to add an element of gossip/speculation to keep it current. "performer announces gig" dies quite quickly in the press.

I got it wrong last year and partly feel to blame for fuelling the park stage daft punk rumour but you win some you lose some, was still a great time meeting new people in the largest ever crowd for absolutely nobody.

Because as I keep saying believe it or not some artists (particularly non British ones) really couldn't give a fuck about Glastonbury. Why should he need to deny something that he's never said nor alluded to doing in the first place...

thing is, you're only covering the major towns, and there's around the same sized population in the countryside with no trains.

And even for those towns the train is only any good if the train station is within walking distance. Once you've got into your car, you might as well be driving all the way in many respects.

The Hop Farm is damned awkward for Londoners, but only because they're used to having everything on their doorstep. For the rest of the country, that sort of thing is normal life - and so Hop Farm isn't actually that awkward. That's what I'm trying to get at!

Each to their own opinions. I have heard differently from people who also lived it and saw it. I think he's got a bit more respect from music lovers than Westlife.

I don't doubt it, but when anything gets as mainstream as Prince did, the majority of fans also like Westlife.

Regardless of taste, Sign O The Times has very much entered the pantheon of "classic" rock albums in a way that has eluded the likes Flying Without Wings or Seven and the Ragged Tiger.

I get your point however you can apply that to any very popular band/artist, The Beatles, Elvis, Queen, The Rolling Stones etc... I'm not sure the majority of their fans also like Westlife.

Not quite the same thing, as those acts had masses of 'credible' fans too.

The difference is shown by them all being a similar massive in their time, but the 'massive' for Prince has just about disappeared now.

Bollocks. Utter, utter bollocks. One is black (first black artist on MTV, in fact), rumoured-to-be (although not actually) pansexual, a purveyor of smutty lyrics (Remember Darling Nikki in the hotel lobby, "masterbating with a magazine"?) and acknowledged imp of the perverse. The other are 5 ballad singing white boys in granny-pleasing knitwear.

and all share a huge part of the same fanbase.

All the people I knew that liked Prince in the eighties were the wet saps. While some of them had tastes that spread into the 'credible' to some extent, those same people's tastes also spread in the other direction too.

The vast majority listened to and liked "chart music".

Purple Rain in full without giving them the medley treatment would be great. Although it can be odd - with the Breeders and Last Splash in Kentish Town everyone was nonplussed when you do the whole album in order and a mega hit gets delivered early. Prince was more savvy than that though in the single placing so it would work.
